Summary: Never in a million years!
Review: It is a rare event when a movie stricks my interest so much that I can sit in front of the television playing it over and over again. But the Anne of Green Gables trilogy does just that. My heart swells with the romances of Anne, and one can't help but laugh at the antics Anne gets herself, and her friends, in. These films are wonderful for little kids, and absolutely brilliant for those of us wanting to remain young at heart. I would definitely guarantee that you will like the movies!

Summary: Anne of Green Gables with Anne Shirley as Anne Shirley
Review: L. M. Montgomery's beloved classic novel "Anne of Green Gables" was first filmed as a silent movie in 1919 with Mary Miles Minter and was a very successful television movie in 1985 with Megan Follows. But this 1934 film directed by George Nicholls, Jr. is capable of standing on its own as a charming version. The film stars Anne Shirley as Anne Shirley, because actress Dawn O'Day changed her professional name to that of the spirited orphan when she made this film. The only problem with this film is that the ending is a bit rushed, but otherwise it captures the wonderful story of how an imaginative red-haired orphan changed the lives of the people who lives at Green Gables. Co-starring Tom Brown as Gilbert Blythe with O.P. Heggie and Helen Westley looking like they were born to play the parts of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. In 1940 a sequel, "Anne of Windy Poplars" was made, but it was definitely inferior to this effort. If you are a fan of Anne of Green Gables, then see if you can track this one down. You can never get too much of Anne.

Summary: The Black and White Version
Review: Not quite up to the formidible level of the Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, Richard Farnsworth 1986 version of Anne of Green Gables but the charm of the L. M. Montgomery story is still visible and the spunky Anne is endearing. I watched the two versions on successive evenings and enjoyed both. I did see camera set-ups from the 1934 film used in the 1986 film. Dawn O'Day was a fine Anne and O.P. Heggie and Helen Westley as Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert were okay but how do you top the three leads in the 1986 version?

This film is of interest to collectors and classic film buffs because it is a good film and worth your time, but I would recommend the 1986 film if I had to choose between the two. It is perhaps unfair to judge one film against the other because the later film, beside the talented actors, had more time to develope the story; in the 1986 film Matthew buys a puff sleeve dress for Anne in a very nice scene and in the 1936 film it is: "I would like a puff sleeve dress" and "Here it Is." If I were to forget the 1986 film I would give this film one more star.

Summary: This Movie Deserves More Than Five Stars...
Review: Personally, I never really got into the LM Montgomery books about Anne. But, I will be the first to say that the Anne Of Green Gables movies are my FAVORITE.
I very highly recommend them.
The story begins in the first movie, with a young orphan girl who is mistakenly adopted by an elderly brother and sister, Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, who actually wanted a boy to begin with.
Marilla wants her to go. But soft-hearted Mathew has started to like her. So they give her a chance.
So starts Anne's journey to become accepted by her adopters, to make and keep friends and deal with every entertaining incident after another... From taking action over her 'homely' looks, to trying to convince her best friend's mother that she really is good.
Along the way, many other characters are introduced... Diana, Anne's closest friend; Gilbert, a teasing young guy who has taken quite a liking to Anne, and lots more.
The actors preform their parts very well, especially Megan Follows as Anne and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla.
I hope you get a chance to view this film. While you're at it, why not try watching the sequel and the last of the Anne movies? It's definetly worth it.
Enjoy!

Summary: That's Anne With An 'E'...
Review: This is a very enjoyable adaptation of the classic story, and Anne Shirley is absolutely wonderful as the title character. However, I think the film probably would have been a little stronger had it been made four or five years later when Hollywood filmmakers had really mastered their craft. This version still shows the theatrical influence left over from the silent era (note the focus on facial expressions and the heavy eye makeup on Marilla). Nonetheless, it's still a fine little movie for kids of all ages.

As for this DVD edition, the film appears to be taken from an old television print rather than the original negative. The picture quality is acceptable, but there is no evidence of any restoration work and there are gray bands that scroll down the screen throughout the movie. In other words, don't expect the crisp image quality you'd expect from a DVD released by one of the major studios.

Summary: This is a very good adaptation
Review: This is a very good adaptation of the classic L.M. Montgomery novel and it's worth having this black and white classic version as well as the classic 1986 version. So Marilla caught Anne and Gilbert smooching in the woods, that didn't bother me at all and I would hardly call it a bad adaptation because Anne kissed Gilbert in the woods! If you get a chance to watch this movie take it and if you have an open mind and small changes don't annoy you than you won't be disappointed as afterall they also made small changes in the 1986 adaptation.

Summary: I love it and wish they would transfer it on DVD!
Review: This is the 1934 black and white version of Anne Of Green Gables and it's as good as the the 1986 version that stars Megan Follows. Actress Dawn O'Day like so many others found the character of Anne Shirley so charming and delightful and a kindered spirit that she changed her name to Anne Shirley, not sure if she legally changed it to Anne Shirley or just used it as her stage name but all I know is that she was just as good as Anne as Megan Follows and really captured the charm and spunk of Anne that L.M. Montgomery created in her wonderful novels! The actress who played Marilla though giving a fine performance wasn't quite as good as Colleen Dewhurst but then who could possibly be a better Marilla then her? This movie is definitely recommend to fans of the novels and of the Anne movies that star Megan Follows and I wish they would transfer this on to DVD!

Summary: I Loved It!
Review: This is the original movie adaptaion of Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables and though I prefered the remake from the mid 1980's that starred Megan Follows I loved this 1930's version too. The actress who played Anne Shirley used to be called Dawn O'Day but when she read the Anne Of Green Gables book to research her role she liked the character so much she decided to change her name to Anne Shirley. I recommend this classic movie to any Anne Of Green Gables fan, it is very worthy to be included in a Green Gables video collection right along Anne Of Green Gables and Anne Of Avonlea starring Megan Follow.
