Summary: Some Like it Hot, Some Don't
Review: In analyzing the plot of this movie, some things are immediately apparent. If men dressed as women are this popular, Janet Reno is a lock as Florida's next Mr. ah Ms. Governor. Also, an individual of confused sexual identity who is bewitched by a near-famous blonde? Shouldn't this be titled the Anne Heche story? Finally, how could anyone come up with a more contrived plot? This movie should elicit continual shouts of "THERE IS NO WAY THAT WOULD HAPPEN." The true movie viewer should require more....

Summary: Still Sizzling...
Review: What is is about two men dressed up as women that is so funny...but only when they don't want to be dressed up as women. Not since my father dressed up as the fairy godmother in a "funny" play when I was a child have I laughed so much. Yes, and I do have that picture to prove it.

Now, in this movie....Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon look pretty hilarious in make-up. Billy Wilder decided to film this comedy in black and white to play down the garishness of the make-up and I think it is fun to see a movie in black and white now and then. It did not detract from the content at all.

The scenes start in Chicago in 1929 and we find a shoot out between the police and a group of bootleggers taking a coffin filled with liquor into a Funeral Parlor. Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) are playing in the "funeral" band. They narrowly escape a raid and try to borrow a friend's car. In the process they witness a brutal Mob killing and have to board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne (was going to be Geraldine...but you will see why it changes.)

As the new and two homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band, they fall for Marilyn Monroe (Sugar) and the result is hilarious. Marilyn then decides to go off gold digging and the result is even funnier.

Josephine and Daphne spend a lot of time running away from the Mob in their high heels....

Summary: outrageous, gender-bender comedy
Review: Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis bring down the house in Billy Wilder's classic comedy SOME LIKE IT HOT.

Set in Chicago, 1929, the prohibition-choked city is reeling from Spats Colombo (George Raft) and his posse.

Joe and Jerry make a narrow escape after witnessing a horrendous murder committed by Spats, and are forced to masquerade as women in an all-female jazz band until the fuss dies down.

There they meet Sugar-Kane (Monroe), the ukelele player/singer who becomes their close friend. Complications arise as Joe falls for Sugar, all the while being disguised as a woman!

Featuring Monroe performing the hits "Running Wild" and "I'm Through With Love", this gender-bending comedy of the highest order is a delight.

Summary: A Classic
Review: This was my first B&W film! I love it! Everyone should see it. I'm sorry that we lost Jack Lemmon a few weeks ago. He was a brillant class act. The tango sequence is the BEST! The acting by Tony Curtis & Merilyn Monroe was great too.

Summary: very funny
Review: i just received this dvd in the mail a few days ago, and i absolutely loved it!! besides that it is in black & white(which i wish was in color), it's pretty much perfect. i can't say enough about the acting of curtis & lemmons dressed as girls after they witness a shooting. they looked so pretty hehe. lemmons was just hilarious and curtis was just so handsome. this film has a little of everything: comedy, romance & action. joe(curtis) pretended to be a millionaire so he could court monroe(sugar cane). it was so romantic. after watching them together, you kind of wish they were actually together in real life. two goodlooking couple. an old rich man tries to court daphne(lemmons)who was annoyed at first..ended up engaged to him. anyways, it's a very good movie. dont hesitate.....just watch it!

Summary: I Like it Hot
Review: If you love this movie, then just order this DVD now! I have several videotape copies of it, which I thought were good ones, but this DVD makes them all look like junk. This film is absolutely pristine. I don't know if they restored it or what, but it looks like it was just filmed last year. No skips, scratches, or anything detracts from the see-through gowns that Marilyn wore. It is in slightly wide-screen format which was how it was originally shown. The sound audio is very good as well. So get this DVD, move a little closer to the TV, run the sound through your stereo and enjoy my all-time favorite movie.

Summary: Still "Hot" after all these years
Review: "Some Like it Hot" has deservedly earned the distinction of being #1 on the AFI's "Top 100 comedies" list. It is non-stop funny, and even bittersweet, too, directed by "Mr Weltschmerz" himself, Billy Wilder. "Weltschmerz" is the German word for "worldly-wise", which Mr. Wilder is so perfectly suited. Having such dark, cynical classics such as "Double Indemnity" and "Sunset Boulevard" to his credit, as well as the comedies "The Major and the Minor" and "The Seven Year Itch", Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond crafted their impeccable script for "Hot". In "Some Like it Hot", a major theme running through the film is "role playing". Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, on the lam from gangster George Raft, are "playing" women. Marilyn Monroe, as "Sugar" Kane, in her hopes of snaring "millionaire" Curtis (he's role-playing in order to "seduce" Sugar)pretends to be a "debutante", a gangster's convention in the Miami hotel is pretending to be "Friends of Italian Opera"-see what I mean? There are echoes of earlier films here: George Raft says to a coin-tossing Edward G. Robinson Jr. "Where'd you pick up THAT cheap trick?" which is a homage to his star-making role in the gangster classic "Scarface", and later, when he picks up a grapefruit to smash into Harry Wilson's face, is a homage to the James Cagney classic, "Public Enemy". And, of course, the supporting players, which include Joe E. Brown, Pat O'Brien, adn George E. Stone are a stroke of genius-these guys were around in 1929-the year in which this film takes place. The film is wonderfully acted, and one would never suspect that there was so much tension and frustration on the set due to Marilyn's legendary lateness and line-flubbing, due to her extremely unhappy personal life. And then, of course, there is the lady herself. Marilyn looks radiantly beautiful, even with the added pounds she is carrying (I believe she was pregnant at the time, and eating enormous amounts of food-sadly, she miscarried shortly after). She is very tender, with that magical "innocent" quality that no one else could carry off, even while wearing clinging, see-through dresses and negligees. May I add here that Orry-Kelly's costumes for Marilyn are brilliant 1920s confections, stylized to fit Marilyn's very un-1920s figure. Her famous "I wanna be loved by you" dress, with its see-through top, has some very whimsical details, so small as to almost go unnoticed-there are tiny hearts, embroidered in beads, over her breasts and on her right buttock. Another dress, a black see-through number, has a jet-beaded butterfly on her famous derriere! Beautiful, funny clothes. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are also wearing Orry-Kelly creations, which are extremely accurate recreations of 1920s clothes-my grandmother had dresses like these! Add to this a great musical score, featuring 1920s songs such as "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Runnin' Wild", "Down Among the Sheltering Palms", and others, which is wonderfully orchestrated and performed-I want to get up and dance a wild "Charleston" or "Black Bottom". And, lest I forget, the wonderful extras on this DVD-an entertaining interview with Leonard Maltin and devilish Tony Curtis filled with some racy anecdotes, an interview with four of "Sweet Sue's Society Syncopaters", one of whom is Laurie Mitchell, who played the title character in the camp classic "Queen of Outer Space", and a Virtual Hall of Memories, crammed with dozens of wonderful stills from the film. I STILL like it Hot-the flame hasn't gone down, let alone out!
