Rating: 5 stars
Summary: 5 stars for the chauffer...The real star of this movie!!
Review: Like the last reviewer, I too saw this one when I was younger and found myself traumatized for life by that damn chauffer! I can only begin to count the times in my life when, late at night, I would be absolutely terrified to look up from the covers for fear of seeing HIM standing there grinning! Even now, well into adulthood, he still haunts me. No other character in a horror movie has inspired so much terror as the creepy chauffer.

Watch the movie and you'll notice that he doesn't say anything, only appears a few times, and doesn't do much except for that hellish grin and pushing the casket into the room. Speaking of which, that was the scarriest part of the movie: Late at night when Ben rolfe sees the hearse pull up outside the mansion, the chills just work up your spine. You know that HE is comming. Then you hear the thumpthumpthump comming up the stairs outside the bedroom. When I first saw this, I knew what was going to happen. How many of you have been in your bedrooms an night with the doors closed and fearfully imagined the same thing happening?

Its 5 stars for character actor Anthony James and his chilling portrayal of the chauffer. The only things which come close to providing this kind of terror are:

1)From the first Halloween movie...When Michael Myers puts the white sheet with the eye holes over himself and puts on the glasses of the guy he's just killed. That thing looked truly evil! I still expect to see that when its dark in the house!

2)The twins from The Shinning. How many times have I walked down a long hallway and been afraid to turn the corner?

3)Also from the first Halloween...When she enters the bedroom and sees the body there on the bed with the gravestone at the top. Now that's sheer terror!

Summary: As scary now as it was then!
Review: Amen to all the reviewers who were (and still are) traumatized by that creepy chauffer! When I was around 8 I saw the Shining for the first time and would not look down our hall at night for a year for fear of catching a glimpse of the twins. Just when my psyche was getting back in order, "Burnt Offerings" was shown on a saturday afternoon movie special. I was once again turned into a quivering, sweating invalid under the sheets in my bed, convinced if I peeked out even once HE would be there,..grinning. The dream sequence is DEFINATELY one of the scariest in horror film history, and more than enough reason to put up with the film's datedness (and Bette Davis's death throwes). I rented it last year (I'm 25 now) and for the first time in years while watching a movie felt that sickening tense chill when i saw the herse first pull around the corner. I cant wait till I get my copy! Now my friends will finally know what this weird movie is I'm been talking about for so long.

Summary: Effective haunted house thriller with good acting.
Review: Karen Black, Oliver Reed & Bette Davis give solid performances in one of my all time favorite haunted house thrillers about a house with an apparent life of it's own. If you like your horror straight, this one is for you.

Starts out a bit slow, but ends with a bang!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Pure Horror
Review: Lord have mercy. I remember when i first saw this movie, i was young and didn't know what it was. I was TOTALLY FREAKED OUT by the chauffer."dude with the glasses and that horrible smile" I am 26 and believe it or not still refuse to watch this movie. I used to see it on previews and one time got a glimpse of a preview for it and my heart went into my throat. that's how scared i am. It's a good movie though. But darn if i see it again.

Summary: Roz and "Brother" sure have a special rental...just for you!
Review: If you are a Karen Black fan (and really, who isn't?), the is the "piece de la resistance" of her horror career. After bullying her husband (Oliver Reed) into renting a gourgeous but delapitated Edwardian mansion on Long Island for the summer, the Rolf family soon discovers they got more than they paid for!

What's the story with the old lady in the attic? Why is Marion (Black) acting even stranger than usual? Why do you suspect Roz (the wonderful Eileen Heckard), and Brother(Bergis Meredith) seem so eager to rent the place?

Watch for the chauffer driver (or as I used to refer to him as a kid, the "guy with the glasses")and wait for him to smile and feel the chill work right up your spine. This one really works, so if you like to be scared, if you like Karen Black, and if you like 70's trash-o-rama, it's a must see!

This was the first horror movie I ever saw (at the age of 5) and I have been a horror fanatic ever since.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: This movie is a little cheesy but VERY under-rated.
Review: This movie has been panned by every reviewer, yet I think it's really, really scary. It's the chauffeur guy- he really makes my blood run cold. I first saw the movie as a kid, and it gave me nightmares. I'm now 29, and last week I rented it again out of curiosity. After all these years, I STILL had a little trouble watching it. The dream sequence-- in which Oliver Reed flashes back to his mother's funeral-- is probably the creepiest, most morbid 45 seconds in all of horror cinema-- the music, the camera work, etc. etc. Overall this is a pretty satisfying horror movie, despite the '70s cheesiness. If you're into Gothic horror, this is a must-see.

Summary: Perfect haunted house story
Review: This movie is a little slow at first, but as strange things start to happen and the mysterious "old woman" up in her room make it much more exciting as the movie goes on. The ending of this movie is GREAT! Not at all what you woud have expected.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Film That Will Clear Your Mind
Review: Burnt Offerings runs slow for a horror film. But it does make up with an incredible ending. Great casting with Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Bette Davis. Seeing the old raggedy house turn new right before eyes will freak out the non-horror film fan.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A real scare..movies inthe 90's lack this kind of terror.
Review: I've seen a lot of horror films in my day from The Exorcist to Scream 2 ..This one gave me nightmares. A family rents a huge country mansion for the summer at a price too good to be true only to find out the price they pay is not with their money but their lives.Ms Alterdise makes Freddy look like a chump and this house make Amityville look like a funhouse.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: sizzling climax
Review: I first saw this movie when i was 12 years old. Now being 27 i can truly say i still have a little trouble watching it; not really ever watching the whole thing. This movie is one of my faveroite horrors of all time i rate this movie right up with all the friday the 13th's.
