Review: Isn't the Web great? I thought I was the only one freaked out by the image of that guy. I was a horror movie buff at an early age and that chauffer was one of the scariest images then.

Summary: A Guaranteed Scare
Review: Despite the show of typical 1970s horror film cheesiness, this film is by far the best haunted house movie I have ever seen. They just don't make atmospheric thrillers anymore. Curtis' typical settings and atmosphere really come through here, and the wonderful score really tingle your spine. One word of caution: if you watch this alone, locked up, you're guaranteed to look behind your back for someone coming to get you. Daytime or nighttime! And Anthony James as The Chauffeur, enough said. A must-see!

Summary: A Haunting We Will Go
Review: An old favorite from the 70's about a house that is not just haunted but is actually alive. Karen Black moves her family in to the creepy old mansion and before long all sorts of bizarre events begin to occur. Burgess Meredith plays the kindly old caretaker of the property and adds a real sense of mystery to the story. The ending is one that has haunted me since childhood and still stands up today.

Summary: a Pre-AMITYVILLE horror show
Review: I first saw BURNT OFFERINGS when I was about 5, and it was the most horrifying thing I'd ever experienced... nightmares for weeks and the cause of a permanant phobia of hearses and pall bearers. To this day Bette Davis' final scene makes my skin crawl...I saw it again 20 years later and while it's no longer as horrifying as I recalled, it's still an eerie atmospheric chiller which, for its PG rating, is still excessively gory (during the still terrifying climax)and has moments of intense suspense. The main difference I've found change over the years is how long-winded the film is. Nothing really happens during large portions of the film, but when the (subtle) ghostly attacks occur, it's definitely worth the wait. A must for fans of THE HAUNTING (the original, that is...) and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR.

Summary: Anthony James update
Review: Howdy! I left a previous post last year (w. old e-mail address) stating my obviously shared trauma over the chauffer. To those wondering about Anthony James whereabouts these days, rent Clint Eastwoods "The Unforgiven". A little greyer, but still pale & skinny (& minus sunglasses), he plays Skinny, the whorehouse owner. It's a little disillustioning to see the mysterious spector as a wimpy pimp, so avoid if you want to keep the horror alive.

Summary: I'm still scared of that chauffeur with that stoic smile!
Review: I watched this movie when I was in my teens in the late 70's and the chauffeur has haunted my memory ever since. Not even the tall guy in Phantasm (my second scariest guy) could come close to that chills that pale chauffeur gave me then. I remember the numbing effect when Bette Davis discovered all those flowers one morning. And the ending, I remember closing my eyes and I still believe to this day that I missed it. I never watched it again. A friend I met recently also watched the movie and he was just as scared as I was then.

Summary: The Forgotten Haunted House Film/Burnt Offerings
Review: This 1976 masterpiece is at the top of my list for haunted house films. It is seldom on television, and I cannot understand why. Burnt Offerings is not your ordinary horror film with ghosts and gore or expensive special effects, but a psychological thriller that keeps you asking questions long after the closing credits role. If you want to see an average haunted house flick rent Amityville Horror or Poltergiest but if you want to be terrified by the horrifying image of a hearse driven by the angel of death, played by the creepy Anthony James or a wave pool that would drown any Baywatch lifeguard or an old mansion that transforms itself to its original state with every drop of blood that is shed by its inhabitants, you must watch Burnt Offerings.

Review: I first saw Burnt Offerings as a child early in the 1980's...it was one of those 3:00 p.m. Saturday horror movies I grew up watching...but this one should have had a warning label. The hearse driver is the most terrifying single screen image ever seen in a horror film. The scenes he appears in will ruin you for life.

Review: Is there anybody who would like to help me research and find this actor Anthony James who played the chauffer in Burnt Offerings? We need to locate this guy and let him know the profound effect he had on all of us who watched this movie growing up. This guy is a cult figure who needs to be recognized for his 15 minutes of fame...or 3 minutes for that matter. I would love to get a poster of him smiling. Of course i'd be too scared to even look at it.

Summary: All Time Classic Horror Movie
Review: It's so good to hear all of the responses to Burnt Offerings. I saw Burnt Offerings for the first time when i was 6 and it still haunts me to this day. The chauffer still scares me. There's also something about the haziness of the film. It has a cloudy, bland colour sequence that just adds to the haunting effect. Most Dan Curtis movies had that effect. I would love to see what the chauffer looks like nowadays. His face will forever be an imprint in my thoughts. Nobody mentioned the part when Ben (Oliver Reed) was trying to drive away from the house. He was being attacked by the trees and suddenly the chauffer appeared sitting in the passenger seat. Unbelievable! They just don't make scary movies like that anymore. I'm with everyone else when they say that Burnt Offerings, along with the Exorcist & The Shining, is the best Horror film of all time...HANDS DOWN.
