Review: Now I know, before anyone else says : "Oh God, not another Haunted House Movie"!Not quite - this one's slightly 'different' - starring Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Miss Bette Davis as the obligatory, chain smoking Aunt [quite a nice turn], with plenty of fractured moments. How about a turn in the Greenhouse? Then there's also Burgess Meredith and Eileen Heckart - albeit fleetingly - as 'mom's kids', and the spectacular Anthony James ["Home James and don't spare the houses, err horses"]. BRIGHT sunlit poolside hijinks will never be the same, also there's just something about the attic, perhaps its Norman Bates territory, and mother has migrated .....? Well, we do and will find out. But be warned - don't accept these over zealous 'invitations' on impulse! Some things call for 'salf sacrifice' [and then some!] Sinister is a mild description for this terror!

Summary: Great Movie- BUT lots of unanswered questions
Review: Great Haunted House movie!! Karen Black is wonderful (as always) and so is Oliver Reed. As opposed to movies thesedays, this was just one good horror flick.....no gore, just a plain simple horror movie. It does leave alot to the imagination though so you go figure it out. It is great to watch the house "come alive" again. But still-- we needed a few questions answered- what was with the brother & sister- - -were they suppose to be ghosts? was the house actually the "old woman" upstairs who took over Karen Black? Oh well, you just buy it watch it and write your own review and tell me what you think.

Summary: Great movie for Horror lovers
Review: Burnt Offerings is a classic horror movie and is an excellent one to watch if you like really creepy, scarey movies that don't have what have come to be "traditional" teen-age slice-and-dice scenes. This movie is one of my all-time favorite scarey movies. A real chiller!

Summary: Creepy Eyes
Review: I am into creepy movies and I heard about this movie Burnt Offerings. It seemed interesting so I got it. The one person who creeped me out the most was the Mom. When she was about to push Oliver Reed out the window and you saw her eyes that scared me stiff. Karen Black or should I say Karen Blacks eyes are truly creepy.

Summary: CHAUFFEUR
Review: When I was 8, I saw Burnt Offerings, and like everyone else the chauffeur scared the ... out of me. After I realized the chauffeur kept popping up throughout the movie, I started hiding my eyes and dreading seeing him. I had bad dreams about him, and eventually forgot what the movie was about... all I remembered was that I was terrified. Anyway, I rented the movie years later. It was a very slow movie and I was entertained at seeing the cheap props in it. However, seeing his face again was equally horrifying, even 20 years later. I showed the movie to some of my friends and they didn't seem to share my horror. They thought it was boring and not scary at all.
I never have seen a movie that had so many obscure parts, that left a spooky feeling. I just wish they elaborated on some of the parts.

Summary: Blue Face Lady!
Review: I can recall watching this movie in the early 80's while babysitting. I can't believe I forced those poor kids to watch this movie! It's horrifying! They still talk about the "Blue Face Lady" in the attic....we had a blast being scared together and still remember every chilling moment. I have to have this movie and may order one for the kids as well. I think it will definately bring back memories. I HIGHLY recommend. This one is creepy.

Summary: The mansion steals the show!
Review: This is one of the few horror films that I can still sit back and enjoy. It scared me pretty badly as a kid. I still feel all the haunting vibes and chills watching it as an adult. It may not be action packed (although the scene with Reed trying to kill his soon in the pool was terrifying--and ultra-realistic), but it certainly gets under your skin. This film is about mood, and it is both beautifully entrancing and ominously mesmerizing. I actually found the acting quite good. Reed was wonderful. I loved the two weird siblings, Roz and Brother (Burgess Meredith, wonderful actor). Their adoration of the house sent chills up my spine. The true stars of the movie are the music (Bob Cobert's amazing Music Box Theme) and the house (Dunsmuir House & Gardens, in Oakland, California). For true horror buffs out there, this movie inspired the creators of PHANTASM to drive up to Oakland and use this same mansion as the infamous Morningside Mortuary. Which is probably, when the opening moments of PHANTASM rolled in 1979, I had such fear towards Morningside--seeing the mansion there again on screen! I have to wonder if other elements of BURNT OFFERINGS inspired PHANTASM as well. Note the creepy old lady upstairs at the end. Reminds one of PHANTASM's eerie fortuneteller. How about B.O.'s terrifying hearse chauffeur? He's kind of like a forerunner of the Tall Man! BURNT OFFERINGS is well worth the viewing. Don't expect any real jolts or screams. But turn off the lights and let it really sink in. It's well worth a viewing. There are many moments (such as the house renewing itself during the rainstorm) that are bizarre and horribly fascinating. I haven't seen this good a haunted house movie in years. And definitely visit Dunsmuir in real life. This place is spectacular. You'll fall in love with it, just like Karen Black! lollol [....] I certainly did. I spent awhile helping out as tour guide and volunteer at the estate while attending college in the Bay Area. To me it'll always be both Morningside and 17 Shore Road. During tours of the manse, the guides always are sure to point out the "Blue Room" where Bette Davis met her demise in the film. (Shiver.)

Summary: GREAT PERFORMANCES!
Review: Oliver Reed and Bette Davis are extraordinary. Also Anthony James as the Chauffeur is just downright SCARY. I took 1 star away only because it is a bit slow, but well worth the wait. I went to visit the Dunsmuir House in Oakland, CA where it is filmed, and as beautiful as the house is, it still scared the hell out of me. I kept looking at the little window at the top floor. This is one movie that is actually better than the book, although the book went into more detail about Karen Black's obsession with the old lady. The ending was different, it was much more subtle than the movie's big ending. I love director Dan Curtis (from Dark Shadows) and the music score and music box song were perfect. Beautiful and creepy at the same time!

Review: I am so gratified to find I am not alone in my paralyzing fear of the image of the chauffeur. Even though I saw the movie probably twenty years ago, sometimes when I shut my eyes in the shower or to fall asleep, his hazy, incomplete, and slightly misremembered image forms on the back of my eyelids and I have to open my eyes for fear that I might suddenly, somehow envision him as he really looked and the horror will return...
