Summary: Best Horror Movie of all time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Great acting, subtle effects a scarry movie that makes you feel uneasy it should not be viewed alone in the night!

Summary: Light, shadows, darkness ... and Julie Harris' face.
Review: As with all truly great horror films, "The Haunting"'s strength lies in what it doesn't show you, but simply suggests - through brilliant use of light and shadow (and pitch darkness), masterful acting (who, apart from Deborah Kerr or Lillian Gish, could match Julie Harris in facially registering such unspeakable horror? ... well, okay, Sigourney Weaver maybe) and cleverly crafted ambiguity (we still don't know for certain whether Hill House is really haunted ... at least until the climax). I had to wait until I was about 17 to see this movie for the first time ... it was released in cinemas here at a time when 'Not Suitable For Children' meant what it said, and I was only 10. It was well worth the wait, though. I'd no idea that a re-make was being done, and the news has very little appeal; given Hollywood's fetish for tomato ketchup, computerised intestines and leery masks, one can only hope that whoever has control of the project doesn't miss or ignore the point of Shirley Jackson's novel. Speaking of the novel, Stephen King deals with it in wonderful detail in his essay collection, 'Danse Macabre'. A recommended read.

As for the film, it had many highlights for me, but nothing will beat that hand-holding scene - during which, I'll swear until Hell freezes over, there was a eye looking at Eleanor (and me) out of that wallpaper!

Summary: Has it all-"THE" classic haunted film for mature 10&up!!!
Review: My sister and I saw the preview on T.V. and after everyone else in the house was asleep snuck into the den and watched ...THE HAUNTING. It was dark. It was black & white T.V. We were forbidden to be watching it. It was unforgettable. The soft creeping eeriness...the pounding pulsating breath of the halls, walls and doors. As kids it was just scary as hell. Many years later my kids are of age and it's a rainy Halloween night. It took many calls to video rental stores but finally THE HAUNTING was located. It passed the multi-generational test of the truly classic film. The guests of my kids went back to school talking about it. They asked to borrow it to show their families. The sculptured physical ornateness of this classic haunted house makes one wide eyed alert to catch all of the moody visual detail and at the same time tensed for unfolding events in the story. You can overlook the dated soundtrack. Although, I am a little nervous that a not so well done new film might detract from the reputation of the old one...well, it wasn't so well known anyway. Besides, Liam Neison is great anytime and a new soundtrack could be awesome. elementary school librarian -C.Todd

Summary: A two hour fright-fest!
Review: The doors!...remember the doors??

Summary: For an old B&W movie - IT'S SCARY!
Review: Kudos to the director, who made the most of what he had...funky camera angles, lighting, and a few real "shock" scenes make this intense film a real gem. Aside from Nell's internal dialogue(which becomes a bit ridiculous after a while), this movie delivers the goods if viewed in a very dark room on a rainy night.

Summary: They don't come scarier than this!
Review: The Haunting is an intense, riveting frightfest of a movie which has lost absolutely none of it's power. Having watched it almost annually since it's release in 1963, this classic still delivers the shudders and shivers. Great cast, especially Julie Harris as the lonely Eleanor, searching for meaning in her life within the terrifying walls of Hill House. You will never forget this one.

Summary: Sad and scary.
Review: Scary, because of unexplainable events, the Haunting revolves around a verbally-abused woman, a central character, put upon by her sister & brother in law and their child. A good part of her past has been invested in caring for her recently deceased mom, as her nursemaid. Her future consists of an invitation to partake of Hill House Estate as part of an experiment; what we find her doing is making a new life for herself. This is where the story begins. I found that this movie is an honest look at someone's sad life, under the guise of a "horror" movie. Befitting, since sadness itself is one of life's horrors.

Summary: STILL SCARES ME 30 YRS LATER
Review: I FIRST SAW THIS FILM ON TV WITH TWO OF MY FRIENDS. WE HAD HEARD SOME REVIEWS BUT THOUGHT THEY COULDN'T BE TRUE. WE CONSIDERED OURSELVES TOUGH ENOUGH TO HANDLE ANY HORROR MOVIE, BUT NOTHING COULD HAVE PREPARED US FOR " HILL HOUSE". TO THIS DAY I STILL CANNOT DANGLE MY ARM OFF THE EDGE OF THE BED. I HOPE THE REMAKE DOES IT JUSTICE.

Summary: It's what you DON'T see that'll get you!!
Review: By far the best haunted house film I've ever seen! My sister used to try to get me to watch it as a boy, and I finally got to see it in its entirety nearly 30 years later. GUARENTEED to make you leave the lights on and be wary of dark corners! The hand holding scene is a real scream!!

Summary: Spine tingling horror without the gore.
Review: A real spine tingler. This movie is the best haunted house movie I've ever seen. Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson who is known as a legendary horror writer. You're in for some good old fashioned chills.
