Summary: A Wayne Classic
Review: This is the movie that got me hooked on John Wayne westerns. It's a great movie to watch on lazy or rainy weekend afternoons. All the cast mesh so well together that no part stands out above the rest. Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin's duet is a great highpoint to the film. The Duke is his usual wonderful self as he works to save the day, and Angie Dickinson does a great job playing an independant woman that won't be told what to do by him. Lots of great laughs.

Summary: This movie has not been treated with the respect it should.
Review: This has been one of my favorite movies since it's first theatrical release. When it was released on VHS I couldn't wait to buy it. I rushed home to watch it and my excitement quickly turned to anger when I realized that many of the original scenes which had been deleted when the movie was released to television had NOT been added back for release to video. I am now wondering when this movie will be released on DVD, and if it is, will it be in its original uncut version. Considering that all of the stars of the movie except Angie Dickinson are now dead, and that it is considered one of the greatest westerns of all time, I think it would be a shame not to release the DVD version of the movie with NO deleted scenes.

Review: i just have to say that this is one of my all time favorite westerns. not only is the duke in the movie, and does a great job, but Stumpy always makes me laugh. The singing in the movie is also good. Don't miss this one!

Summary: Hawks Past His Prime
Review: RIO BRAVO is sad, in that it shows Howard Hawks long past his prime. Hawks had his golden period from TWENTIETH CENTURY through RED RIVER. His later films, including this poorly structured, tritely written and clumsily acted (especially in its degrading treatment of its Mexican characters) western, are cardboard cutouts compared to his earlier films. If it's John Wayne and Dean Martin you want at the top of their games, check out SONS OF KATIE ELDER, one of the best of all westerns. Of course, its director, Henry Hathaway, isn't looked on with favor by the auteurist clique, thus it isn't given its due. But watch RIO BRAVO and SONS OF KATIE ELDER back-to-back, and decide for yourself which film is the better.

Summary: Hardly A Classic
Review: RIO BRAVO has achieved cult status, mostly because of the auteur nonsense attached to anything Howard Hawks did -- as long as it dealt with professionals carrying out their duties! This film is shallow, lazy, and encumbered with a truly embarrassing performance from Angie dickinson -- admittedly, she was hamstrung by truly awful dialogue.

Review: Rio Bravo Stars John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickinson, Walter Brenon, and Ward Bond. In Rio Bravo the trio of John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Ricky Nelson gave their best performance and made oscar "caliber" material. This movie is serious, yet it provides several laughs. If I could recomend a John Wayne movie to someone that had never seen one before this would be the movie. I rate this movie six stars.

Summary: Classic Western!
Review: As the 1950's rode into the sunset Rio Bravo was the best way to close it out. Howard Hawks did an outstanding job telling this story. John Wayne along with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson gave solid performances. One of the all time great western's. Should have made AFI's top 100 films. Grade:A-

Summary: The Duke's Answer to "High Noon."
Review: John Wayne was offered the starring role in "High Noon" before Gary Cooper and turned it down flat. He disliked the script because he thought it was "unAmerican." A sheriff in his time of need is abandoned by everyone? The Duke hated it. "Rio Bravo" is the Duke's version of "High Noon." Here the sheriff, played by a terrific Dean Martin, gets help from every direction- the Duke, the codger- Walter Brennan, and the kid- Ricky Nelson. In "Rio Bravo" people stick together for what is right. It's John Wayne's version of America.

Summary: The Duke and Dino clean up
Review: Not only one of the best Westerns ever made, but also a great film on its own. This was made when Wayne was still way out in front as a box-office draw, and when Dean was proving he was more than an underrated straight man for Lewis. Martin was also reported to have picked out his own wardrobe. Howard Hawks' direction is first rate and the cinematography, acting, musical score and dialogue are all excellent. Wayne and Martin play well off one another and it's too bad they only made one more film together. (The Sons of Katie Elder) The sing-along with Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan is priceless!

Summary: See it if you haven't; if you have, see it again...
Review: Some complain that Nelson is "sleep-walking" or "comatose." Others say that he mumbles. He does neither. All he really does is play the self-effacing, laconic young cowboy (of which the real West has NO shortage) quite well. He doesn't sing badly, either. Othes say that there is no chemistry between Wayne and Dickinson. Maybe not, but it does accurately capture the awkwardness one might expect in a similar situation. Those two minor criticisms aside, this is simply a great movie, a timeless classic, one for the ages. I could go on, but you get the idea.
