Summary: A wonderful classic!
Review: Young widowed Lucy Muir rents Gull cottage near the sea and departs to live there with her daughter and maid. But she hadn't counted on the irascible ghost of captain Gregg. They start a tentative friendship which develops into a deep love. A classic and beautiful ghost story based on R.A. Dick's novel. Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison are stellar ás Lucy Muir and the captain. They've an excellent on screen chemisty. Gene Tierney portrays Mrs. Muir as spirited, radiant, dignified and stubborn. She's certainly a match for the captain. Rex Harrison
also rises to the occasion, and plays the captain with relish. With appropriate gruffnes and great virility. The captain haunted me from the beginning to the end. Their sparkling, humorous battles, matches of will and developing friendship/love are beautifully portrayed. Also interesting is the thoughtful notion that only in death can Lucy Muir and the captain truly be together. The beautiful and poignant finale is simply unforgettable. This story is also the template for the gruff ghost and spunky heroine story type. Countless others have followed in its tracks. But 'The ghost and Mrs. Muir' is the best, most tender and poignant of all! Truly an outstanding classic.

Summary: A Great "I Just Need To Cry And Feel Happy Flick"
Review: I first saw this film as a child, and fell in love with the story, the charactors and the simple beauty. As an adult, I find it still has the same incredible mysteries that keep me entranced. The writing is o-k at best -- the story a bit over-done -- but the romance is beautiful as are the sets and the feeling at the end that you really can find forever love with your true-soulmate. I have seen it on television, on video and even in a movie theater -- and when I just need a good cry that will leave me feeling good and refreshed -- this is where I go! Hope Lange lovers beware -- there is nothing of the sit-com in this stunner!

Summary: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Review: The film is a gem. I am able to excuse Gene Tierney's difficulties with acting and watch the great talents of Mr Harrison and Mankiewics, etc. The story line is superb and the filming is terrific. The video production is a disappointment. The definition is not good and there are sound problems. Luckily I have a copy from AMC that I watch faithfully. I anxiously await the DVD of this stunning film.

Review: When Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison) utters this lament, you can't help but swoon. And why is that? Because "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" captures a fear we sometimes have,--"What if there is a person just right for me, but we never meet in this life?" and then puts a spin on it--"Well, suppose you could, if there were such a thing as a ghost!" Captain Gregg has only been dead for four years when Mrs. Edwin Muir (Gene Tierney) rents his Gull Cottage, so they have only just missed each other temporally. Yet they forge a relationship, at first rusty as he must adjust to her settling in, then companionable as her collapsed finances force them to collaborate on his memoirs, then -- but what else can there be, since he's only a ghost? The attraction for me here is Captain Gregg's longing for what he can never have, having to remind Mrs. Muir ever so gently of the sad truth of their predicament: She, "What's to become of us, Daniel, of you and me?" He: "Nothing can become of me. Everything's happened, that can happen." What a lonely, tragic thought, and the brooding, hard to grasp score by Bernard Hermann helps carry the mood of a strange dream of which we can remember only snatches when we unwillingly awake. Captain Gregg eventually realizes he must relinquish his love to live her life among the living, even though he doubts a happy outcome to her infatuation with a suave gentleman author, Miles Fairley (George Sanders). But love is about sacrifice sometimes, and even a ghost can feel pain but do the right thing. Everything about "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" fits together beautifully: the score, as mentioned before; the set of Gull Cottage, built in tasteful nautical style; the costumes designed by Oleg Cassini, then married to Gene Tierney; and the actors, competent and evocative. Cater to the romantic in your soul--see this movie as soon as you can.

Summary: Evening Star in the Galaxy of Romance
Review: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir was a splendid surprise to me. Being a romantic, I was sure that I had seen or at least known about all the classics of the past...what a surprise, when I finished viewing this film! It was more than I could ever have dreamed.. discovering such an incredible work of art, from the past; a black and white jewel come to life. The most beautiful facet of the movie, is that the Captain (the ghost) and Mrs. Muir never touch...yet "the look" and energy between them is truly the most perfect form of all the ethereal things one dreams to capture in romance. Rex Harrison and Jean Tierney were divine together. She, independent, yet so a lady, and he, weathered and rough, but a gentleman. The passion and respect of one another is superb and fits every dream I have ever had that resembles my idea of love and romance. The music, the house, the sea, the wind...perfection. After viewing The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, I feel I have found the ultimate Romantic Movie, and I am so happy and fortunate that it found it's way to me.....!

Summary: One of my Top Ten movies
Review: This is one of my mom's favorite movies, and she introduced me to it when I was about 12. I liked it so much I actually purchased the book for her! I recommend a box of tissues for anyone viewing this; you'll need them (especially at the wonderful last scenes). All I have to say is, they certainly don't make actors like Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison anymore. I sincerely hope they don't make a dreadful "remake" of this movie; it would be a travesty! Absolutely no actor today could live up to this legacy.

Summary: AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE!
Review: This movie is an absolute treasure and on my top ten all time favorite movies list. It's a timeless love story with a twist. A widow and her young daughter leave the big city against her deceased husband's familys wishes and moves to a sea side cottage. The cottage has had a bit of trouble getting rented, for there seems to be the ghost of a sea captain residing there as well. I won't give anymore away because the best part of this film is all the little things that happen to the widow as the years pass on. This is a real charmer for all ages. Enjoy your time at "Gull Cottage"!

Summary: True romance is not about kissing or even touching...
Review: This was the movie that convinced me that the great screen romances involved couples that were not able to kiss or even touch. The Ghost the late Captain Daniel Gregg, played by a bristling Rex Harrison, while Mrs. Lucy Muir is Gene Tierney, a widow who moves into the captain's seaside cottage with her young daughter (played as a child by Natalie Wood, by Vanessa Brown as an adult). Of course, he wants to be terrifying and chase her away from "his" home, but she, of course, finds him endearing. He declares he is not ashamed to have lived the live of a man and she counters that being alive is not a crime. They talk about everything except their feelings for each other, but that is the true topic of all of their conversations. When Miles Fairley, another one of George Sanders patented silvery-tongued rouges, enters Lucy's life offering her a chance for happiness in the real world, the Captain loves her enough to leave her, not knowing that Fairley has a secret. However, while the title characters do not live happily ever after, there is a wonderful ending to the film. Definitely one of my ten favorite Romance movies of all time with marvelous interaction between Harrison and Tierney (her best film by far). Adapted by Philip Dunne from R. A. Dick's novel, with solid direction from Joseph L. Mankiewicz and a superb score from Bernard Herrmann. "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is a treasured Golden Oldie, not to be confused with the wretched sitcom television produced in the late 60's.
