Summary: Good quality DVD
Review: It is a tribute to Stanley Kramer's genius that, while this is by no means his best movie, it is nonetheless widely regarded and hailed as a comedy classic.Most of the actors do a passable job, but the real mainstays of the production are Ethel Merman and Jonathan Winters. Their performances are just brilliant and they completely steal the show. The DVD quality is excellent. The documentary, which is also on the VHS, is definitely worth watching. One warning, however: this is not the "full" feature presentation that is on the VHS. The overture music was left out entirely, and certain bits of pieces were left out and relegated to the special features. The resulting movie is about 21 minutes shorter.

Summary: The Wonders of the "World"
Review: I have been an avid watcher of this movie since I was old enough to speak. This is one of the very few movies out there that is just as funny every time you watch it! The cast is golden, every performer playing a truly quirky, believable character. The only copy I have seen is a taped one, and it is very worn as it's very old. I'm incredibly happy the DVD has come out, and recommend everyone rent it and see it. Soon, you will come back here to buy it!

Review: I've seen a lot of good movies, but my all time favorite of all of the movies I have ever seen is thie movie. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World is the funniest movie, in my opinion, EVER PRODUCED! I'm part of the "next generation, considering I'm under 20 and this is the absolute funniest movie I've ever seen. It doesn't matter how old you are, no movie that is produced today has ever matched up to this. The hilariousness of this movie goes on and on. It's not just every once and a while somethign funny happens, something funny is ALWAYS HAPPENING! All I have to do is say the titel and I get a big smile on my face. This is the greatest movie I've ever seen and I'm goign to stick to it for a long tiem.

Review: Enough of the critics(so-called)picking this hilarious classic to pieces! I was born the year this movie was made, but films like this were a part of my childhood AND adulthood!These comedians and the situations they found themselves in defined modern comedy....was it too much slapstick? YES!!!Was it over the top? YES!!! Was it long? YES!!! That is what made it a classic .....the director and writers knew what they wanted and put it on film with no apologies.....watch this film and know that we as a generation have lost something with much of the current Hollywood fodder. A remake of this film would be an insult....rent it and lose yourself in the sometimes subtle performances of these master comedians doing what they do best!

Summary: One of a kind classic comedy
Review: My husband and I have watched this movie since we saw it in the theatre and love it every time. If you need some laughs and want to see some of the great comedicans all in one movie be sure to see this one. You can't get much better than this, especially if you remember the comedians of TV and Movie fame in the 1940's through 1960's. One of the best. We even laugh knowing what's coming. Don't miss it. Comedy at its best - fast paced and great fun to see so many of the great comedians.

Review: When Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante) crashes his car on the highway an ill assorted group of diverse travellers gather around him to hear his last words. When he tells them of some buried treasure under a "Big W" at Santa Rosita park they all resolve to be first there to dig up the money. The chase is then on by plane, car, truck and whatever means they can find to get them to the park quickly and look for the loot. Police Captain Culpeper (Spencer Tracy) keeps an eye on them all from a safe distance so that he can grab the money for himself once it is found. J. Russell Finch (Milton Berle) has to put up with nagging mother-in-law Mrs Marcus (Ethel Merman), his wife Emmeline Finch (Dorothy Provine), and the interference of the very British J. Algernon Hawthorne (Terry-Thomas), while dentist Melville Crump (Sid Caesar) and wife Monica Crump (Edie Adams) get trapped in a hardware store looking for tools to dig up the treasure. Truck driver Lennie Pike (Jonathan Winters) meets up with con man Otto Meyer (Phil Silvers) who naturally wants to get in on the chase and claim a share of the proceeds. Benjy Benjamin and Ding Bell (Buddy Hackett and Mickey Rooney) charter a light aircraft hoping that will give them the advantage but are panic stricken when their pilot Tyler Fitzgerald (Jim Backus) is accidentally knocked unconscious during the flight leaving Benjy to pilot the plane!! What evolves is the chase movie to end all chase movies and although the film was criticised by some as being too long I found it thoroughly entertaining and it was O.K. for me. Another of those rare films that improves with repeated viewings although it is best seen on a large cinema screen in a theatre. Produced and directed by Stanley Kramer this was a complete change of pace for Kramer who was previously known for his more serious films such as "Champion", "The Men", "The Wild One", "The Defiant Ones", "Inherit the Wind" and "Judgment at Nuremberg" etc. Some favourite lines from the film: Milton Berle (to group): "Hey, did you see it? The way he went sailing right out there! He just went sailing out there". Jimmy Durante (to group): "It's in this box buried under this ... buried under this big W. You'll see it. You'll see it under this ... under this big W. You can't miss it. A big ... a big W ... and it's been there ... and it's been laying there for 15 years". Buddy Hackett (to group): "We figured it 17 different ways and every time we figured it - it was no good because no matter how we figured it somebody don't like the way we figured it so now there's only one way to figure it and that is every man - including the old bag - for himself!". Ethel Merman (to Terry-Thomas): "Where did you get that funny accent? Are you from Harvard or something?". Phil Silvers (to Jonathan Winters): "Try me - I'm pretty gullible". Phil Silvers: "This is no place for a convertible". Sid Caesar (to Edie Adams): "It's a couple of sticks of dynamite that's all - how much noise can it make? Boom - it's all over!". Jim Backus (to Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett): "Who says this boy can't fly this old plane? There you go!". There were so many cameo guest appearances in this film from well known stars and comedians it was hard to keep track of and if you blinked you could easily miss them. Among those involved were Jack Benny, Jerry Lewis, The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, Dick Shawn, Peter Falk, Ben Blue, Joe E. Brown, Stan Freberg, Leo Gorcey, Paul Ford, Don Knotts and many more. One of the best screen comedies ever made.

Summary: A Bit Too Long, But Fun Nevertheless...
Review: I believe that, at the time this movie was made (1963), this film was the longest comedy ever made, and to this date may only be surpassed by Robert Altman's SHORT CUTS, which also clocks in at over 3 hours in length. However, even as long as it is, there is always a lot of action taking place in every scene, so it never gets very boring. It's really cool seeing so many classic actors & comedians when they were young...well, make that younger. Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Jonathan Winters, Peter Falk, and Don Knotts weren't exactly young when they did this movie; Spencer Tracy was a not-very-healthy 63 (he lived only another 4 years afterwards), and Milton Berle & Jim Backus were already nearing senior status. Normall Fell (who appears briefly at the beginning as a detective) basically looked and sounded just like Mr. Roper, just a bit younger. The only "young" actor here is a 30-ish Dick Shawn, who plays an hilarious character here that is reminiscient of the "L.S.D." role that he would play 5 years later in THE PRODUCERS. But you get the idea: it's always cool to see old actors at a younger stage of their careers, before they got to look like they did when I was growing up seeing them on TV. Many fans of the CANNONBALL RUN films thought that THE GUMBALL RALLY was the first of its type. They are wrong. IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD came first, and is probably the best, with well-fleshed-out characters. Although I could do without Ethel Merman's slightly-too-screechy performance at times, this is an entertaining movie that I would recommend to anyone who likes zany comedies. I would also recommend this as a "family movie" although the film's overlength will put the little ones to sleep long before the end. Kids over 8 might stay awake for the whole thing. All in all, I think that this is a good movie to see at least once while in a playful mood, just for it's zany originality alone.
