Summary: What a Western!
Review: This is the best Western ever made...hands down! What a cast! (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson) There is a lot of action and a lot of dry humor. It's the sort of movie that you want to watch again and again. The best parts are the ride on the hearse by Chris (Brynner) and Vin(McQueen) and when they are teaching the Mexican villagers how to shoot: Bronson: "Squeeze the trigger! Like when you're milking the goat Miguel! Squeeze!" Miguel: "But I get excited!" Bronson: "Well, DON'T get excited! Here, I tell you what you do. Don't shoot the gun! Hold it like this and use it like a club! " Ya'll have gotta see this movie!

Summary: THE LUCKY SEVEN!
Review: I'm a truly Western fan. I have seen all of the sequels to the Magnificent Seven. And, I've got to tell you this is about the best all-star Western movies I've seen. When I saw THE SEVEN SAMURAI, I had'nt encounterd a remake of the classic Japanese film about Seven Samurai who save a village from bandits. The American version done it just. Look like, they would continue the series since it was called "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" Instead of making The Magnificent Seven, Return Of The Seven, Guns Of The Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride! why didn't they finish the sequels by adding three more sequels to finish the series. Yul Brynner if he didn't want to play Chris, I'm sure there were several other actors that would love to play Chris. Return Of The Seven was awsome too! But I didn't like it that Chris recruited Manuel, a chicken thief to fill out number six. If I was Chris I would have recruited that bully who was fighting Manuel, at least he knew a little something about a gun. I hated it that he got killed in it. For Guns of the Magnificent Seven, the cast were great but the characters were new. I don't think that Max was a real recruit. Again, I wouldn't have picked him. I would try to go and find someone else if I could. Finally, The Magnificent Seven Ride! was a good action-Western to watch as well. The five convicts and a dude writer ride south of the border to help a town filled with women. Again the characters are new, now Chris is acting Marshal and is married. He quits and wants revenge for a thief who turned killer and rapist againist Chris's wife. The new characters are: Pepe, Walt, Noah, Hayes, Skinner, Elliot they are pretty good. Again I wish they had finished the series with three more sequels to live up the title's name.

Summary: A Magnificent ride into the old west!
Review: This is about as good as westerns can be done. My fiance and I absolutely adore this film. Seven Samauri is interesting, but in a different way. The Magnificent Seven grabs you from the first scene with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen riding up the hill on that hearse. The middle part has some slow sequences for diehard action fans, but the climactic scene is terrific. This film is about redeeming the human spirit- sometimes good does triumph over evil.

Review: I realize it's politically correct to say that "Seven Samurai" is a superior film, but give me Brynner and company any time. They are actually two very different films and it's ludicrous to even compare them. The viewer who said that Brynner is miscast and is too European should listen more closely. Brad Dexter refers to him as a Cajun--the character is of French ancestry. In fact, I think this is one of Brynner's finest performances, devoid of the hamminess that marked much of his work in other films. Look at him staring straight ahead in the scene where Bucholtz drunkenly taunts him; he's scared to death he's going to have to kill this kid. A very complex character.

Summary: poor Hollywood adaptation of Seven Samurai
Review: Despite the all-start cast, the acting is wooden and the script terrible. Cliche-ed from start to finish. Wallach is good as the bad guy, Coburn occasionally smoulders; that's about it. Give me Takashi Shimura any day!

Summary: Unfortunately, I saw Seven Samurai first...!
Review: Sorry, but Magnificent Seven did not kick me apart AT ALL. It was so Hollywood: villagers standing around woodenly, finishing their lines for each other, about as exciting as a Greek Chorus. They didn't seem to really fear for their lives, much unlike the peasants in 7S, who huddle on the ground together, wailing en masse! Also, after you've seen robbers being speared, flying arrows, and WONDERFUL swordfighting you will simply yawn to see actors shooting toy pistols. There's one scene where someone gets shot with a revolver from like--40 ft away! What is that?? Let me just say that if you did like M7 and haven't seen Seven Samurai, DO. You'll see that M7 doesn't hold a candle to it. True that the actors are cute though. See them in another movie.

Summary: Despite flaws, The Seven still stands tall
Review: The Magnificent Seven is a good Hollywood western but a few things keep it from being the best western ever made. First, I got the feel that the dialog was too stilted for a western. There was too much philosophizing from the gunslingers. Perhaps it was intentional homage to Seven Samurai, but it sounded like art film fare at times. Second, I didn't particularly agree with the casting of Yul Brenner as a gunfighter. While he gave a good performance, his presence alone gave the movie somewhat of a European (almost Asian) feel. I think he'd of made a better villian. Third, there were too many villians for the Seven to fight, making the premise of the movie somewhat of a shaggy dog joke. Eli Wallach is classic, but why would a man of such charisma, such machismo need a band of some forty extras? Cannon fodder, maybe? Nevertheless, the movie survives through the strength flawless music and restrained direction that could easily have turned Seven into one big festival of gore. The action scenes are realistic and well edited. And we get to know and feel for the hapless victims of the violence: the villagers. When the smoke clears,the Seven's still stands taller than many contemporary westerns.
