Summary: Welcome to Life's Banquet!
Review: Rosalind Russel in the role of a lifetime. Auntie Mame leads her beloved nephew on a roller-coaster ride from riches to rags back to riches, always teaching the boy to "live life to the fullest". The story begins just prior to the great stock market crash of 1929 and spins into present day (1958). There are delightful moments with colorful characters, most noteworthy "Miss Gooch", an unwed mother and thus an outcast of respectable society. There are several touching scenes when the family is suffering in the great depression, but just as many funny ones, i. e. where Auntie Mame puts some biggoted snobs in their place. -- I enjoyed this film slightly more than the later Lucille Ball musical version. Although Rosalind Russel is quite flamboyant, Lucille Ball is completely "over the top" and thus less credible. I recommend the 1958 original over the remake, although both are wonderful entertainment.

Summary: auntie mame the magnificent
Review: firstly, five stars is woefully inadequte when rating this film. ten stars would be closer to the mark. my bob and i serve martinis before we start and during the intermission of our annual auntie mame partees. i really do lack words trying to describe this film. the highest verbal forms of praise would be, again, woefully inadequte in any attempt to review. the writng, acting, directing, costumes, on and on, perfect. just see it.

Summary: Simply put, One of the Best Movies Ever Made!
Review: When I was 22, my movie experiences consisted of current comedies (Animal House, Blues Bros., etc.), science-fiction, action, and horror. Old movies held no interest for me whatsoever (and I'm still kinda iffy on them). My partner sat me down and said "Listen! There's a movie coming on in a few minutes on PBS that I insist you watch! It's one of the best movies ever made, and nobody should go through life without having seen it at least once!" Sensing he was serious, I sat down and proceeded to watch "Auntie Mame" starring Rosalyn Russell and Coral Brown. At that time, that was probably one of the greatest things anyone had ever done for me. Auntie Mame tells the story of a boy (Patrick Dennis) who was raised by his rather bohemian and eccentric aunt (Mame Dennis). It is pure, magical, madcap comedy at its best! The movie runs long, and when it's finished, you wish it was even longer. The story starts in the 1920's, just before the stock market crash. Patrick is orphaned by his ultra-conservative father and goes to live with his eccentric aunt, Mame Dennis. The catch? The Knickerbocker Bank is the boy's trustee and they're ultra conservative too! Rosalyn Russell is simply wonderful as Mame Dennis, the eccentric, liberal, bohemian auntie who raises Patrick. Coral Brown is her equally liberal, "not afraid to say anything" actress friend. In this movie, we watch Patrick grow from a young boy into a man under his aunt's care, surviving the depression, custody of Patrick by the ultra-conservative Knickerbocker Bank ("They're so conservative they don't pay any interest at all!"), a hilarious meeting with a misguided-Patrick's future in-laws, the fall and rise of Mame Dennis, and finally Patrick's new family (complete with son whom Auntie Mame instantly starts to influence in her own delightful and unique way). There's drama, heart-touching moments, and a ton of humor. Do yourself a favor and get this movie. It's one the best ever made!

Summary: Pickled rattle snake, anyone?
Review: This film is an absolute scream! I first watched _Auntie Mame_ when I was about 15 y/o, and have been in love with it ever since. I cannot imagine any other actress fulfilling the role of Mame Dennis with the vitality and hilarity that Rosalind Russell did. There is an "Auntie Mame" in all of our lives (my Great-aunt Dode and Aunt Brenda, for me), and this film allows you to relive treasured "experiences!" While there are other film versions of the Mame story, this is the only one worth its salt. But when will there be a REALLY TOP-DRAWER DVD version?

Summary: Exciting, Hilarious, Fantastic -- Absolutely Wonderful!
Review: Auntie Mame is my favorite movie of all time! Rosalind Russell is brilliantly cast as the bubbly Aunt who is granted custody of her nephew after the sudden death of his father. Viewers watch as this wonderful woman opens "..doors for [him], doors [he] never even dreamed existed!" This movie had me laughing and smiling the whole way through, from the hilarious parties thrown by Auntie Mame to her trips around the world and the wonderful gifts she returns with! All of her colorful friends just add to the excitement and fun that this movie has to offer! After watching this movie I wanted to take Auntie Mame's advice and Live! Live! Live! Because as she said, "Life is a Banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!!" Wonderfully written and brilliantly cast this movie has something to offer for almost everyone! And I'm not the only one who thinks so -- this film was nominated for best picture!!

Summary: 'SEE THE MOVIE, [READ THE BOOK], SEE THE MOVIE AGAIN!'
Review: Roz Russell! They threw away the mould! She won the Golden Globe for this one, outrageously costumed by the Great Orry-Kelly, this one's a masterpiece of JOY, sheer Joy from 1958. The rest of the Cast? - Starting with Coral Browne [everyone deserves a bosom-buddy like "Vera Charles" - that accent!], Peggy Cass [the ultimate Virgin/Secretary-in-waiting], Fred Clark [banker from hell and back] - Superlative!

This one covers everything [including discrimination folks, that's brave for 1958!] and then some.

Lovingly restored to widescreen [those famous "fade-out's] - often imitated, never surpassed, this is the only version really worth seeing. When Hollywood truly produced entertainment.

One Legend is that Coral [later Mrs. Vincent Price] was not blonde enough for the role - she went home and dyed her hair within an inch of life - returned, got the part! That's Vera!]

A good companion piece? Try "Harold and Maude" - different, but just as unforgettable.

Now how about that future DVD version?

Summary: TERRIFIC!
Review: AUNTIE MAME AND ROZ RUSSELL GO HAND IN HAND! IT IS HER PINNACLE SCREEN PERFORMANCE AND WHAT A GRAND SHOW IT IS! MANY PEOPLE, CRITICS TOO...THINK IT IS A BIT EPISODIC AND A TAD TOO LONG BUT I SAY "BAH!"AS FOR THE MUSICAL VERSION WITH LUCY...IT IS JUST PLAIN BAD...STICK TO THE ROZ VERSION AND YOU CAN'T GO WRONG! NOTE: I SAW ANGELA LANSBURY ON STAGE BACK IN THE 60'S AND SHE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THE PART IN THE MUSICAL FILM INSTEAD OF LUCY BUT NO ONE COMPARES TO ROZ BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN PARTIAL TO ROZ...WE BOTH HAIL FROM THE SAME BLUE COLLAR CITY BACK IN CONNECTICUT AND WE BOTH WERE SMART ENOUGH TO LEAVE!

Summary: Simply the Best
Review: Auntie Mame is the quintessential feel good movie. The story of a flambuoyant Mame Dennis, who takes in her "little love," her nephew Patrick. Rosiland Russell is positively perfect in the role of Mame Dennis. No one could ever do this role as well as she could. Lucille Ball doesn't even come close. I strongly recommend this film to anyone who just wants to find a film with a happy ending.
