Summary: a satisfying and refreshing sci fi movie
Review: I first saw the movie when I was 6 years old . I am fortunate to own both the cut and the uncut version of the l951 classic. I feel sorry for anyone who has only had the opportunitythe work of john carpenters, the thing. though good,It misses some of the knuckle chewing popcorn crunching of the orginal.

Summary: Best 50s-style sci-fi ever made...technically excellent
Review: I have seen this film 100 times if I've seen it once. Its simple special effects stay out of the way of the story -- a small band of people cut off from help with a shrewd killer on the loose. It is a common Howard Hawks theme, though directed in the HH style by Christian Nyby. You may be surprised to learn that the scene on the snow where the spacecraft has sunk and refrozen was filmed entirely on a soundstage, not outdoors.

Summary: THE 50s Sci Fi Classic of All Time
Review: I'll never forget that walk home in the dark with my cousin after watching "The Thing." This classic Howard Hawks thriller chills you with an idea rather than an image. Why the copyright holder is withholding publication and re-release is surely a mystery to me. From my and other comments here, it is quite apparent that there is a significant market for the film. Let's get it back in production!!!!

Summary: Not that good IMHO.
Review: I don't like this film because of the unwarranted hype! I would probably have liked it better if I were not so fired up by those positive reviews at Amazon.com because this film is not even a fraction of what that have been described about it!!!! Sorry folks but truly none whatsoever.. Maybe my earlier expectations shot thru' the roof since I did not know better than to trust the questionable reviews here. But all I can say is this, this film may appeal to some and is actually not too bad but at the same time, it is not great either. I think the word "cult" is a great misnomer for this movie. Renting this movie would be a wiser move than buying it.

Summary: Just great.
Review: I can practically quote the lines in this movie I have seen it so many times. What a great study in post World War II "can do" vs the Carpenter version, which I also really liked, that is cynical, dark, and gorey. I get a kick out of the dialogue and people talking over each other, laughing at the almighty military's bureaucratic instructions. Viewers really need to put this movie into historical context - America had won the war, military was right, we had no enemies except the unknown.

Summary: Overrated Letdown
Review: This is a prime example of an overrated film which is essentially a letdown made up of an inane plot and near zero budget(which explains why there is basically no special effects worth mentioning and a darned cheesy monster costume in the show).

Thankfully this film has been out of production for a really longggg time and that fact alone tells you that it does not deserve your moolahs.

Stick with the 1982 version by John Carpenter. That is a -real- classic.

Summary: a great, heart-pounding experience for all ages.
Review: The Thing is a spectacular movie. No special effects or anything and it is probably the best monster movie there is. The first time I saw the movie it scared the fire out of me. You never can assume anything in this movie. It just keeps coming at you. Its black and white format doesn't take anything away from its suspense. I think everyone should have the opportunity to see this classic thriller.

Summary: The Best in Horror/Sci-Fi
Review: This just goes to show that you don't need gore to have an effective horror film. The Thing is one of the best. Though it is only in black in white, the music, make up of the monster itself, and especially the tension of the other actors when the monster isn't even shown, all makes for an effective scare. I rate this as one of the best and should be seen by all horror/sci-fi fans.

Summary: Simply the Greatest Science Fiction Movie Ever Made
Review: I first saw The Thing when I was 8 yrs. old on Dr. Shocks Horror Theater on Philadelphia`s Channel 17. Almost 30 yrs. later, it is still my favorite sci-fi film. Fortunately, I grabbed a copy while it was still in release. John Carpenters re-make is good, but it doesn`t match the feel of the original. Thanks to Amazon.com, I recently purchased a copy of the book the film was based on, John W. Campbell1s ``Who Goes There?``, ending a 19 yr. quest to read the story. For those of you looking for the film, hang in there, hopefully it won`t be 19 yrs. before The Thing is re-released. Studios realize a classic when they have one, and eventually demand for this sci-fi classic will force their hand.
