Summary: DVD Edition - Sound Clarification
Review: I already own the Special Edition Laser Disc and purchased this DVD on the strength of the technical information re. sound supplied by Amazon which is actually incorrect. The DVD sound is Dolby Digital 2.00 MONO and not 5.1. One of the reviews also gives the impression that there has been a remix providing a full 5.1 soundstage. This a disappointment and if you already own the laser disc you should be induced into purchsing this item.

Summary: One of the Great Movies -- Great DVD quality, too
Review: First, the DVD. The picture quality is first rate. This is (surprisingly) one of the better DVDs I have seen. Usually older movies don't have the best transfers, but this one is incredible. It rivals modern (1990s) movies, and even surpasses many of them. The THX mastering is fantastic. Now the film. I was very pleased with "Butch Cassidy." Not only is it one of the best westerns of all time, it is also one of the best films of all times. A great load of fun, to put it simply. Great characters with an excellent dynamic between the two, and the great lines they have. There's some good action, and also some humor mixed in. And a superb soundtrack. What more could you want?

Summary: Marvelous, Marvelous, Marvelous
Review: I originatly rented this movie on CED videodisk a long time ago around 1981. I was turned off by the opening title sequence "the silence movie on the wall" I though this was introducing a 2hrs of bordeness. But 20 years later i gave it a 2nd chance and realized that i judged this movie by it cover... so the speak.... This movie gaved me a good lesson, you have to watch the entire thing before you prononce it sentence. It's funny, it got great taste, and I love Goerge Roy Hill's signature.. so much that the next day I bought B.C.S.K. i went out and bought The sting.

Summary: One Of The All-Time Classics!
Review: I remember sitting through this movie with my long-time ladyfriend, both of us totally entranced by its sheer power to captivate and entertain. Friends, it appear as though nothing has changed about the movie's enormous appeal over the years. This is a movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon, a blockbuster movie you and your sweety can snuggle up with on the couch to, a big pan of microwaved popcorn and a couple of cold ones, and wile away the time over. Who can resist listening to the score of "Raindrops Falling On My Head" as Newman and Ross ramble around the yard on one of them there new-fangled bicycles things. Ah, the hubris of youth..... The story is extremely entertaining, action-packed, and full of the special screen chemistry that matching Paul Newman and Robert Redford with a perfect script allows for. By the way,pretty Miss Katherine Ross ain't chopped liver here, either, fresh from her success in "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman. Seeing her again reminds me how much a woman can do to us menfolk with the hint of one her winsome smiles. No wonder she was the dream squeeze of millions of babyboomers at the time. At any rate, all of their performances and the romance and tightness of the film itself contribute to its magnificent and often comical storyline. If you've seen it, you need little encouragment, and if you haven't, you best waste no more time. Enjoy!

Summary: Good DVD
Review: Love this movies for a long time, just got a DVD. It's in THX but MONO sound, unfortunately, because the original picture was mono. Picture sharpness is much better that the VHS version I had. I like the scence index the most, it contain the moving pictures instead of the oridinary picture of that scene, quite a technology. Star interviews (1993) is quite boring, however the making of Buch Cassidy (45 min.) is very good. Subtitle is too bold and big, reduce space of the scence. I also like it's strong pastic case.

Summary: Great American film one of Newman & Redford's best...
Review: This DVD duplicates the laserdisc edition released a couple of years ago. The extras are basically the same. What's different and makes this worthwhile? The transfer is superior to the laserdisc and the AC-3 mixed sound is spectacular (when compared to both the laser and video edtions). Is it worth purchasing again? Most definitely as the user menu is very friendly making this a joy to navigate through. Easily one of the ten greatest films produced during the 60's (and yes, that bike sequence is dated...but still has charm although it runs on a bit too long), this is one of William Goldman's best scripts, well directed by Hill and photographed by Hall. Highly recommended.

Summary: Ellegance music video
Review: One of my favorite movies although I never like western movies. I like the fact the its script was welled-written, excellent combination of real life, drama and comedy. The important point I wanted to make is: there are about 5 soundtrack songs in this movie, played from the beginning of the song until the end. They are very effective, blend well with the mood of the story. Like watching a good music video, ironically, it was not catagorized as a musical ! ( I love "raindrop keep fallin' on my head", charming)

Review: When the movie first came out I would have rated it 4.5 out of 5. But sadly, it hasn't aged as gracefully as I would have liked. Some people love 70's Bacharach music, some hate it. It's one of those movies where when you watch it today, you realize that it has become somewhat dated, mainly due to the music I suppose. However it is still a solid movie with many good moments between the three leads. Interestingly enough when this movie and 'The Sting' was released (Redford & Newman are the leads in both), Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid was considered to be the better of the two movies. Now, over time, I would say that the opposite is true. 'The Sting' has aged far more gracefully over time.

Summary: Classic marred by awful music & 60s cheese
Review: This is one of the best westerns ever made. There have been others with more depth and realism but none has ever been this entertaining. If Paul Newman had never made another film except this one it still would have made his reputation for life. But it also contains one aspect that has to count among the worst of any film ever made (western or otherwise): That awful Burt Bacharach music score. There's a reason he was lampooned so thoroughly in AUSTIN POWERS. This guy was the king of 60s cheeseball pop. Didn't anyone look at the film with the sound on before they released it back in 1969? The music is so out of place and incongruous that it almost manages to ruin the film. And the totally pointless "Riding the Bike" montage featuring the immortal B.J. Thomas crooning "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head": Who thought this was a good idea? Thank god everything else is as good as it is or we could have had a total disaster on our hands. But: Don't let this criticism prevent you from seeing this awesome movie. Like I said, it's one of the best Westerns ever made. No joke. Just be prepared when those montage sequences kick in. The music is B-A-D.

Summary: What's All the Fuss About?
Review: I watched this "classic" after hearing that it was such a good movie. Where's the beef? I fell asleep half way through it, then forced myself to watch it. Yes Redford and Newman are attractive, and in other movies they are superb actors, but this movie just did not move me.
