Summary: A Beautiful Transfer
Review: I have a midrange system. 35" RCA TV with RCA connections between my receiver, TV and DVD player...and this movie looked phenomenal. I literally could not understand how the visuals in this film were done 30 years ago. Very few movies now can pull off cinematography like this. The DVD is visually stunning. Which is a good thing, because the story is slow, ambiguous, and heavily reliant on visuals to carry the pace. An important film, a milestone in cinema, and a movie you really need to be in the mood for to enjoy.

Review: After watching this movie I stayed seated for a while, trying to gather up my thoughts. What did I just watch? What was that? I don't understand! Sitting there silently, alone and confused, I realized something... you're not supposed to get it!

Summary: 2001 A Space Odessey is the best film ever made.
Review: 2001 is my most favorite film in the world. It has beautifuly stuning cinematography, some of the best music ever written, and an elegant storyline which is essentually a morality tale. The best film ever made I only wish there were more like it.

Summary: Not a family film
Review: This movie has special effects ahead of it's time. The story, however, is difficult to follow. I wouldn't recommend it for children or for adults who don't want to really concentrate on the movie! I watched it in a room full of people and by the end 2/3 of the people didn't have a clue what was going on!

Summary: Incredible picture and sound... If you use the right hook-up
Review: I won't touch the film itself, you either love it or you don't, but I am shocked by the comments below complaining about the quality of the DVD's picture. With an S-Video cord used to connect the player with the TV, this is simply as good as 2001 gets on a television. The music is also of amazing, CD quality... if your stereo is a) great and b) again, hooked up correctly.

Summary: Unmatched realism with theatre-quality image & sound
Review: Those of us who were captivated by "2001" when we first saw it in a moviehouse in 1968 will appreciate how well DVD replicates the big screen and big sound. If you are using your computer's DVD (mine is a Gateway G6-350 with 17-inch monitor, purchased in late 1998), you will be overwhelmingly impressed. After reading complaints about poor transfer from 70mm to DVD (ghosts, fuzzy images, etc), I was sceptical... so I rented "2001" and put it to the test on my PC. After just 10-minutes of watching, I was ready to buy my own copy! (Perhaps DVD on a conventional TV produces less than desirable effects.) As a "2001" junkie, I am very impressed with DVD on my PC, and its ability to faithfully present this classic sci-fi. If you loved "2001," you will NOT be disappointed. The only thing missing is the popcorn!

Summary: Absorbing, Exhilarating, Inspiring... Breathtaking????
Review: What can I said, but have you ever found yourselves absorbed by this masterpiece, I do it all the times. To tell you the truth, as I was browsing through this page, I was listening to the soundtract of "2001:a space odyssey", woaaahh, scary? No, just picturing it.. "there, there..." "there, there I am!" I have seen and talked about this movie so many times that it was no surprise to me, to find under the X-mas tree the most wonderful and thoughtful present my second half gave me, the "2001:a space odyssey" video tape. Yeap, I was the lucky one! I think if they were to make this movie nowadays, with all the special effects they have now, I think it could not be different, or slightly different. It looks real and that is why, a movie like this transposes me into the scenery and that's what I want, I need, I like, I expect.I know, I haven't mentionned anything about the story itself,but, why? "Go ahead and see it!" Don't think about 1968, the year this movie was concocted. There I say it again, 1968! It hasn't aged a bit! You won't regret it. You don't need to be a science and Sci-Fi fan, some people say "freak", like I am, to like it, but just to have a bit of imagination. " "Have a nice trek!"

Summary: Magnificent
Review: Here is the ultimate science fiction story, combining elements of alien mystery, human heroics, personable artificial intelligence, and stunning cinematography. From what I can gather, 2001 was the first film to show space scenes on the scale evident in the movie. The scene where the shuttle is docking with the space station, to the accompaniment of "The Blue Danube", is still immensely powerful in this day of Star Wars prequels. There is very little dialogue in the movie, and what there is is nothing but the necessary communication between entities; it is a visual work of art. Having said that, the characters do remain in one's mind: Dave Bowman, the man whose last words to the world were "This thing is hollow...it goes on forever...and oh my God, it's full of stars..", the well-meaning folk on Earth who watch the Discovery's quest with interest, and most of all the Hal 9000 computer, whose efforts to fulfill his primary programming directive are what really drives the story. Hal is frighteningly human, disturbingly so; we can believe he feels emotion and pain. Very little is ever explained in the story, and one gets the feeling it's not really meant to be understood; like any other work of art, it affects everyone differently. Watch 2001 in moments of existential angst, and enjoy the questions it may raise.
