Summary: An UnforgetTable Hitchcock, that Isn't quite Hitchcockian
Review: To Catch A Thief is a very unconventional Hitchcock film, in that it is a romantic comedy, and much like his other romantic comedy Mr & Mrs Smith, it is well worth a look. And not just for curiousity sake, for the film has many great touches: wonderful acting, glamourous location photography and most interesting story that elevates the story from it's romantic comedy underpinings.As a Hitchcock fan, you have to ask yourself: do want to be entertained? Or do you want to see how Hitch flexes his cinematic technical muscle to raise the hairs on the back of your neck? After a certain number of viewings, you want a film that consistently entertains after repeat viewings. To Catch A Theif does that, time and time again. Grace Kelly is most rapturous in this role, and a little more sneaky than her role in Rear Window; you'll love the picnic scene - the sexual overtones play out very well. One of the few good points about the old Hollywood Production Code was the creative dialogue it caused writers to come up with in order to get their points across about sex; which is also why the fireworks/kiss scene is still effective. Nevertheless the Master still employs his dazzling tricks to engage us in the film, but more subtly than usual. The end finale packs a suspense we love from Hitchcock, and the various police chases are fun as well as suspenseful. The precise editing which defines Hitchcocks work is all there too, so it's Hitchcock in spirit and technique if not tone. All in all this film is well worth it -- in any format, but a remastered DVD is most welcome. To see Robert Burkes' Oscar-winning cinematography in a widescreen, properly-timed presentation is well worth the DVD treatment.

Summary: A very Chic and Flashy Hitchcock
Review: The movie is great, yet sometimes straying from the real story
at times.Cary Grant is Jon Robie a former cat burgler trying to
stay clean. He is instantly in suspecion when the jewel robberys
start up again. He runs from the police trying clear his name and
runs into Grace Kelly who is very cool in this VHS. The climax
is totally flashy and gaudy, but keep guessing at who is the real burgler.

Summary: Catch This Film
Review: In "To Catch A Thief", Cary Grant plays a reformed jewel thief living on the French Riviera. He naturally becomes the prime suspect when a fresh string of jewel thefts occurs. In order to prove his innocence, he must catch the real thief. Enter Jesse Royce Landis and Grace Kelly as a wealthy and bejewelled widow and her irresistable daughter. Kelly uses her feminine wiles to snare an ambivalent Grant while he waits for the real thief to make the inevitable attempt on her mother's jewels. Grant is superb as the handsome and charming John Robie, and Kelly also shines as the smart and alluring Frances. In addition to breathtaking scenery, this movie has all the usual characteristics you expect from Alfred Hitchcock: a fine cast, clever and sophisticated story, and outstanding production work. Still, it has been referred to as one of Hitchcock's "lighter" films. And, in a sense, that's true. Certainly a tale about a jewel thief doesn't have quite the intensity of a man possibly murdering his wife in the apartment across from yours, or of accidentally becoming involved with an international spy ring. Moreover, "To Catch A Thief" is partly a romantic comedy, as exemplified by Grant dropping a ten thousand franc chit down the front of a woman's gown, then asking her to return his money, in order to attract attention to himself when he is trying to make the acquaintance of Kelly and her wealthy mother in the casino at Monte Carlo. Romantic comedies aren't noted for their depth or suspense. But don't let that fool you. There are some tense moments before this movie is over. "Lighter" doesn't necessarily mean less enjoyable. Though "To Catch A Thief" isn't quite the thriller that some of Hitchcock's other great films are, it is an excellent flick in it's own right. Grant and Kelly are great together, the story moves smoothly from light moments to suspense, and the location footage from the French Riviera is gorgeous. Put it all together and you have a very entertaining and satisfying movie. Give it a look.

Review: What else is there to wish for; Kelly, Grant, Hitch and his #1 collaborators, South of France in the fifties! Greatest atmosphere ever to be captured on film. What are they waiting for to put it on DVD??? Please!

Review: I love this movie. I can watch it over and over again. It has some beautiful scenery (south of France), great actors and an interesting plot. It's a classic!! I highly recommend it!

Summary: A GRACE KELLY FASHION PARADE
Review: While this film really fizzles after less than an hour, you probably won't care because you'll be too busy watching lovely GRACE KELLY trying to make CARY GRANT her puppy.GRACE had charm,beauty,humour and class.Even HITCHCOCK got stuck in her web so that he forgot the script or maybe he did this on purpice for us.Thanks HITCH we appreciated.Costume designer EDITH HEAD had a field day designing the clothes here.Notice how CARY appears sort of tired in many scenes as though he could not wait to get to the nearest RIVIERA restaurant.TO CATCH A THIEF is really a recreation for a great director in the middle of his creative peak.

Summary: Not one of Hitchcock's best
Review: Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Hitchcock fan and I like Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. But somehow the mystery in the film didn't intrigue me and I found lots of it boring and pretentious. Not that it's a complete waste. Grace Kelly is as always lovely to look at, and the French riviera is stunning. But the story and acting certainly don't linger in the mind. I give it 3 stars for the leads and scenery. One last observation: it is chilling to see Kelly driving the same winding roads in Monaco where she would meet her death years later.

Summary: THAT KISS OF A LIFETIME
Review: Why how come they let those two carry on for the longest? Princess Grace is really kickin it with her bad boy Cary. Everything about this movie is fine and dandy. But That Kiss the that was real fireworks for all the homeboys to plan it out. The director was good. The acting was even better. But Alfred wasn't quite in the groove compared to his better pictures.

Summary: 5 STARS FOR THE SCENERY ALONE
Review: Nice movie, elegantly shot on Location in Monocco. Grace Kelly is breathtaking, Cary Grant perfectly cast as the suave former jewel thief. Great chemistry, beautiful photography, romantic dialogue and costumes to boot! I never get tired of this movie. It also has Cary Grant in a swimsuit on the beach and he wasn't bad for the times and his age. The plot is a little thin at times and some of the scenes can get a little corny (fireworks). This is a must have for any classic movie fan. (By the way, I LOVE Alfred Hitchcock stuff in general, this is not his best by any means)
