Summary: Although I don't review any movie that wants me to see it...
Review: I'll make an exception in this case.

This is the 20th Century's answer to Shakespeare.

The scenes with the popcorn vendor are priceless, as well as the multiple Groucho scene - this stuff has been copied, and never done nearly as good- by everyone from Lucille Ball to Jackie Chan.

See it.

Summary: Question about Marx Brothers box
Review: I have not seen this presentation of the films, but question the reviews. I find that there is too much discrepancy between the reviews here and reviews for the individual films. In my experience Image Entertainment has always done a superior job with their DVD releases, including some of the best releases of silent films available-presumably more difficult source material than the Marx brothers films. I would appreciate further input from anyone in regards to the quality of these films on DVD, and apologize for posting this non-review.

Summary: The Original Anti-War Movie
Review: Ever wonder where ideas for movies like Dr. Strangelove come from? Well, look no further than Duck Soup.

In this movie the Brothers go through their usual zany antics. However, this film has a moral lesson: War is foolish. War is Dirty Business.

Unfortunately, movie goers of yesteryear couldn't see Duck Soup for what it really was. The original anti-war movie. Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx), President of Freedonia, has strained relations with his neighboring country. The leader of the neighboring country sends intelligence agents (Chico and Harpo) into Freedonia to keep an eye on Firefly. Hum. . . Harpo and Chico are intelligence agents. . . how's that for a spin on "military intelligence?" Then again, Groucho once said that Military intelligence is to intelligence what military music is to music. I think you get the idea!

Anyway, Groucho triggers a war when he slaps the leadder of the neighboring country across the face for calling him an "upstart." As Groucho declares: "Nobody calls a Firefly an Upstart." As you can imagine, the war starts out bad for Freedonia. Groucho shoots his own men (and then covers it up: "Here's $5. . . Keep it under your hat. Better yet, keep it under mine"), Secretary of War Chico "joins the other side because the food is better there," and Harpo is combing the countryside (battlefield) for recruits. Finally, when all looks lost, Freedonia captures the leader of the opposing side and makes him surrender by putting him in stocks and then throwing fruits and vegetables at him.

The jokes and one-liners are fast and furious. The slap stick humor is done with a style that can only be accomplished by the Marx Brothers. For example, the bit where Harpo decides to wash his feet in the vendor's vat of lemonade wouldn't be all that funny if someone like Lou Costello or Stan Laurel decided to do the same thing. The mirror scene is a classic Hal Roach silent movie bit. . . possibly done by Chaplain, I believe.

Without a doubt, Duck Soup will keep you laughing no matter how many times you've seen it. It is a Great comedy classic. As a matter of fact, it was recently voted one of the top ten comedy movies of the 20th century. So, go out a own a piece of history!

Summary: Classic Comedy
Review: The Marx Brothers up to old antics as usual. I myself love a good, smart comedy, and that is what these two golden comedies offer. Duck soup takes place as groucho takes over Freedonia, while he hires Harpo and Cheeko as spies. In Animal crackers, they pretty much ruin the estate of a wealthy young woman.

Summary: Duck Soup is mmmmmm GOOOOOD!
Review: "He's right, you've got to take up the tacks before you can take up the carpet!"This is my fave Bros. picture. I even enjoyed the musical numbers(especially--"At last the country's going to war......").Sheer Marx Brothers irrevrancy at its best. This one inlcudes some of the funniest routines such as the lemonade vendor set, Harpo's Paul Revere ride, the mirror routine, etc. This was the last Bros. picture by Paramount, and it is sad that this one bombed in its initial release because it was a great way for the Marx Brothers to exit Paramount, and show that studio what they were losing to MGM(MGM made some medicore Marx Brothers pictures, and I don't see how Night At the Opera is remembered by some as their best work!)If you want to laugh out loud till your seams bust, rent this one!

Summary: The Marx Brother's Best Film, One Of The Best Satires!
Review: This is the Marx Brother's best film. It has enough one-liners for two movies. The wackiest and zanniest political satire ever made. Groucho Marx was one of the funniest men alive, I would have liked to meet him in person. The amazing thing is that the whole family was born with a wacky sense of humor. Groucho has the funniest dialogue, every time he opens his mouth it's a guaruanteed laugh. The mirror scene is genious. One of the greats. From a scale of 1-10 I give this movie a 10!

Summary: Stick with VHS!
Review: These films are all 5-star classics so surely they deserve better treatment than has been meted out here. The picture quality is appalling, the synchronisation poor, and the sound barely audible. Also since there are no extra features, the price being charged is ridiculously high as the 3 films could fit comfortably onto a single dual-layer disc.

Summary: The Apex of Comedy
Review: Before the Marx Bros left Paramount for Irving Thalberg and MGM they made their final film for Paramount and boy did they ever.

I agree, this is the greatest Marx Bros comedy of all time because it is timeless. Those MGM films which at the time, and for some time later were considered the Brothers best work.

The times however have changed and we know why. Many of those MGM films, although big money makers, were stuffed with subplots and dated songs which slow the boys down a bit and date the film even more.

Leo McCarey and the Marx Bros are timless and frantic with no love interest to waste screen time and no long production numbers to numb the senses.

Sit back, relax , and enjoy..the" land of the spree" ! In 1933 this Marx Bros entry lost them their Paramount contract. Think about that?
