Summary: the best DVD purchase I've made in a while
Review: This is all really great. Despite the fairly high price, I kind of bought this set on a whim. I haven't seen most of these since I was growing up. But with this set, I'm a fan all over again, for completely different reasons than when I was a kid. But I guess I can't help but complain a little bit. While I don't really expect to have all of my favorites included on this one set--I have hundreds of favorites--I wish the Warners would have included a wider range of cartoons, especially some of their older stuff from the 30s. I loved the old Merrie Melodies. And it would have been especially great to have seen some of the old black and whites that hardly ever got shown on television (at least not in the 80s/90s), with Bosko, Buddy, and Foxy, and the early Porky and Daffy. And how about more Roadrunner and Coyote? Only one in this set? Still, well worth the purchase. I just hope there's another, more-inclusive, set coming, and another after that. If WB releases all 1000 or so of their cartoons, I'll buy them, consumer sucker that I am.

Summary: A nice start...hope to see a more comprehensive follow-up
Review: With close to 200 reviews already written, there's not much else to say. It certainly is a good start, but well overdue and a bit under done. I LOVE the special features with all of it's behind-the-scenes, as well as the many interviews. But more room should have been reserved for more shorts. I understand that there are well over 1,000 of these things out there, but a more comprehensive collection of shorts would have been nice. I certainly would have paid more for a collection of 7-10 discs. Hopefully Warner will improve upon this by coming out with a second collection that contains more of the classic looney cartoons that so many of us remember so fondly. Oh yeah, thanks for not editing out any of the violence. We need alot less political corectness in this damn country! Now if only someone can get together a collection of Pink Panther, Ant & The Aardvark, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Mighty Mouse, and Heckle & Jeckle on DVD...then I would be a VERY happy man!!!

Summary: Where's Looney Tunes Volume 2?
Review: It's about time Warner Home video released the Looney Tunes on DVD. This is the perfect medium to showcase the talents of the animators who lived at Termite Terrace. WHV has done a bang-up job of restoring these cartoons, they look brand spanking new! I was on a studio tour of Warner Bros 2 years ago and remarked to the tour guide that if the studio were to release their Looney Tunes on DVD, they'd be sitting on a gold mine. The only question now are the MGM cartoons that Warner Bros now owns, classic cartoons by Tex Avery and such that were just as funny and frantic as their Warner cousins. Will they eventually release them on DVD as well, digitally remastered and uncut? We can only hope!

Summary: Lovely Looney's
Review: Kudos to Warner Bros. for an incredible collection of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons! The digital transfer is exceptional, considering the age of the source material. The extras that they have dug out of the vault are amazing! BE WARNED though. The extras, while not rated are not all appropriate for children. Some cartoons were made exclusivley for the military during WWII, and later conflicts, and contain adult and controversial content. The regualr looney tunes have not been censored, and are presented unedited just like the were originally. Of course, they do not come without some controvery for some of the stereotypes of that period. Overall, a great collection of gems, and rare gems to add to your collection!

Summary: An Outstanding Achievement! Hats off to Warner Bros.
Review: ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY magazine rated this LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION as the # 1 DVD of 2003, and boy were they right! Warner Bros. has done a truly awesome job of meticulously restoring 56 of the most brilliant animated cartoons of all time, and assembling them in an intelligently compiled, stunningly produced package. I will add my vote of approval to the many accolades written here by others, and also end with the great news that Warner has already indicated in press interviews that a whole new group of cartoons just coming out of the restoration process will be coming to DVD in the months ahead. Here's looking at you, WB for THE LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION VOLUME TWO! That's NOT all folks! :)

Summary: A Sad Disappointment
Review: You won't find a bigger LT fan than I. Well, you may find one or two. I realize that not everyone's favorite short is in this collection. But the exclusion of "What's Opera, Doc?" is completely inexcusable. It's not that it is my favorite, but if you were to do a fan vote, you would quickly find that many would rate "What's Opera, Doc?" at the very top of their list. Look around at the reviews and see how many times it's mentioned. I'm sure that it was left out for a reason. And I'm sure that reason has to do with $. And that is inexcusable. I'm sure it will probably be offered in "Looney Tunes - The Platinum Collection" ($75, here at Amazon) and we'll have the opportunity to re-own the 56 shorts that we purchased with "The Golden Collection". That is the pattern so far. How simple would it have been to put a complete listing on the back of the box? $ simple. Warner, this is no way to treat your fans. It's also no way to treat the Tunes themselves. We don't expect or want all 1000 or so Loony Tunes shorts. We just want our favorites.
The first time. If Warner Home Video does release another set you might want to take a look at the short listing before purchasing. Provided you can find one. Hopefully, Amazon will have the details again as they did with this set.

Summary: Golden indeed!
Review: What more could any fan of animation ask for than such a deep collection of one of the greatest cartoon series of all times? For me this was the best dvd purchase I made in 2003 (next to the Walt Disney Treasures series).
From the other reviews I have read, there are both many praises and some complaints. First of all, this set is extremely packed with 56 shorts and seemingly endless bonus material. I still have'nt gotten through all of it. What I did like though was the bonus Toon Heads special. It gives a rare glimpse into some of the lesser-known or rarer cartoons like Private SNAFU and Bosko, both of which were new to me until now. But the real reason most people want this is for the cartoons. Here we get 56 toons that have been restored and look terrific. For me Bugs Bunny is the king of them and there seems to be an emphasis on him in this set. Also some shorts were on here that I had forgotten about until now, such as Dough for the dodo. All in all I found this to be very entertaining, and I am lucky to have this collection to be able to watch anytime I please.
Now for the bad, little as there may be. In my opinion there could have been a better balance of the characters, and by that I mean that we could have seen more Road Runner or Foghorn Leghorn. And where is Speedy Gonzales? He is a very important character and I hope he shows up on future sets. Everybody has a certain short they feel was left out, but I would not worry about that. As popular as this collection seems to be(I dont even see it in stock around here any more) I fully expect to see even more sets of these restored shorts. So be patient until then, and if you have'nt picked this one up yet and want to put down the money to do so, you will not be disappointed. I can say this is one of the best dvd's in my collection.

Summary: All the greats, but not quite all the best
Review: This collection is outstanding, including the greatest looney tunes cartoons and then some. But answer me this: does anyone remember that cartoon with Daffy Duck and Porky Pig where they played Robin Hood and Friar Tuck, respectively? That's not on this collection, and Foghorn Leghorn is inexcusably reduced to just two shorts. Other than that, this is great; it has just about every favorite cartoon you could hope for (except the one I just mentioned). There's not much else to say, except if you love Looney Tunes, buy this yesterday.

Summary: The good, the bad, and the ugly
Review: Let's be realistic. Does this collection contain some of the greatest works of art of all time? It does. Does it also contain some duds? Duds R us. Is it "restored"? Not really. It does contain the best available print of every cartoon, and some are pristine mint. But it does not use computer enhansement to restore cartoons whose best existing print has "speckles" (see, for example, "Scaredy Cat"). Some of the special features are really special, others less so. It is unfair of reviewers to complain about omissions -- there are too many great Looney Tunes to fit on four DVDs. It does seem strange that the box does not list the directors, Chuck Jones for example, next to the cartoons they direct. Not everybody owns The Warner Brothers Cartoons by Friedwald and Beck, though everybody should. The special features and the selection try to be even handed -- except toward Tex Avery -- none of his cartoons were chosen. But not all Warner Brothers cartoons are equally good. Chuck Jones was the best, but only the fast-Chuck, not the slow-Chuck or late-Chuck. Professor Jones got his flawless sense of timing in the early forties, and lost it in the sixties. After Jones, Friz Freleng. Friz was not the super-genius Jones was, but he was very funny. The other directors just aren't as good, and for me the entire fourth disk in this four disk set was a waste of time. But there are so many great cartoons here: Bully for Bugs, Rabbit of Saville, The Scarlet Pumpernickel -- that I'm not complaining. I can hardly wait for the next volume.
