Summary: Great, but need more Road Runner!
Review: This selection of "Classic" Looney Tunes is not complete by a long shot. There is only one Road Runner Cartoon.

I hope they plan to realease more!!

Summary: Looney Gold
Review: Since your interested in cartoons, this is the one "Baby Boomers" grew up on and still love. Not edited to death by people who claim they are somehow more violent that the crap on regular TV today, its refreshing to see them in their original cuts. The extras including how the group got together and interviews with Chuck Jones, Fritz Freleng and the others who made the original charaters and their personalities is very interesting even to young children (mine are 10,13 and 15). Our children have laughed out loud at these cartoons.

Summary: Too Much Chuck
Review: As a certified fanatic about WB cartoons, I found this set to be a mixed blessing, but not for any of the reasons mentioned in most of the previous reviews (missing "What's Opera Doc", etc). I feel that Chuck Jones is the single most overrated animator of all time, and his work, as a percentage, is far too pervasive on this set. Jones was argueably the fourth or fifth most talented director at Termite Terrace (after, in order, Avery, Clampett, Freling, and Tashlin), and it boggles my mind that there are some critics out there who think he's THE great genius of animation. My arguments against this are as follows: 1) In many instances, he completely misses the boat on the character of Bugs Bunny. His "Rabbit Rampage", the remake of "Duck Amuck", puts Bugs into the role of a helpless victim! This cartoon (thankfully not included in this set) is one of the most insulting to any true fan. One could argue that he either didn't understand the dynamics of Bugs' character (difficult to believe), or that he simply was arrogant enough to hijack Bugs into an alternate universe, where his usual brash cockiness is usurped by "wimp-dom", or (as is most likely), he simply needed a quick hit, and remade a highly successful Daffy Duck cartoon with Bugs, without regard for the many years of tremendous care and affection that went into the creation of the character by a multitude of talents. There are other instances in Jones cartoons where Bugs' character is not consistent with that of other directors, one has to but study them to see the differences. 2) Many critics worship cartoons like "What's Opera Doc?" etc. But, as the fifties wore on, Jones' work became more and more stylized - to the point of woeful distraction. They ceased to be Warner Brother's cartoons, and became "Chuck Jones" cartoons - "oeuvres" instead of humorous shorts, from an auteur, not an animator. 3) The celebrated cartoon creations from Jones of the Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, Sniffles the Mouse, etc. are, without exception, two dimensional, and therefore result in cartoons that are entirely formulaic in nature. Compare any of these characters to Freling's brilliant Yosemite Sam, who, as a completely 3D character, is at home in a wide variety of settings (Ancient Rome, a pirate ship, revolutionary war America, etc.) and try to imagine ANY of Jones characters in these settings. The Road Runner was a very funny idea, but after six or seven hundred cartoons, you get the idea. "On the American desert, a hapless coyote attempts to capture a road runner by using a variety of methods, all of which end in disaster for for him". That is the plot summary for 100% of RR cartoons.

That being said, I welcomed getting some of these classic cartoons on DVD, such as "High Flying Hare" and "Ballot Box Bunny", I would like to see more Avery (Cinderella Meets Fella!) and Clampett (Book Revue!), or even Tashlin (Nasty Quacks!), and FAR LESS JONES on the next set.

But, to be fair, Jones did some great cartoons as well, "Duck Amuck" (included here) is marvelous, and perhaps his greatest masterpiece, the groundbreaking "Dover Boys", which is (unfortunately) not included. Maybe someday. Please understand, it's not like Jones was a hack - just overrated.

Summary: Almost perfect!
Review: This is a fantastic collection for any fan of the Looney Tunes. There are numerous extras which are fun to watch. The color and sound are superb! The only downside for me was the selection of some of the cartoons. There are some glaring omissions and some that have been included that left me scratching my head when I think of what was left off. Still, it's a small complaint and certainly doesn't detract from the overall presentation of the set.

Summary: The Best!
Review: This is the best Looney Tunes DVD set that you're going to find right now out there in the market! The money it takes to purchase this set is more than worth it! In fact, it costs less than $1 an episode! Not to mention there are gobs of extras!
Plus the quality is magnificent! They restored a lot of the cartoons and they look pristine!
All in all, this set is worth it if you are a fan of the Looney Tunes! Hopefully they will bring out another set very similar to this one. Like Golden Collection 2 or something like that.

Summary: Classic Looney Tunes!
Review: I urge every parent who has a child who loves cartoons to pick this collection up! Many of the TV stations when these were aired during my childhood (late 60s-early 70s) cut them up to air more commercials. It is a joy to see them uncut and in pristine condition on DVD! Share the good FUN with your Family! It is not many things that families can enjoy together now....
My highest recommendation!

Summary: The Collection I Have Been Waiting For!
Review: I have been waiting for this set to come out since I got my DVD player. Growing up watching these cartoons, it's great to have them in such a concise collection, but I must say that there are a lot of Toons they left out of this collection to my surprise. While I highly recommend this collection to anyone, I must warn some of you that there is not too much to see of the Road Runner in this collection. There is also not a single war reference that I can remember. I was hoping for a few "Put out that light!" lines in the set and I was left with none. Regardless this is a quality set that is sure to have a follow-up. I discovered there are many more great cartoons than I had anticipated, making it impossible to fully please everyone with a set like this. Along with the cartoons, every disk has some extra features dealing with the making of these shorts. I personally would rather just have more cartoons. I think it's great for people who are interested in cartooning as a profession, but making a full analysis of some of these cartoons is like asking a magician to give away his secrets. This is a great set. Don't miss it!

Summary: Met all of my expectations and more!
Review: I have all ready written this review but here it is again...I was always a Daffy DUck Fan and when anyone would ask me about Buggs Bunny I would say that Buggs Bunny is just well known and his comics are typical. Elmer Fudd and Buggs and so on. WELL! When I watched the Buggs Bunny CD I was converted! The Cartoons for all of these discs are truly at the best and now I know why this is the GOLDEN COLLECTION.
