Summary: DISREGARD GRIPES FROM THE TRAILER-PARK TYPES!
Review: This set is phenomenal and Warner Bros. has done an excellent job in putting together a first volume. I echo all the other enthusiastic comments here. It's obviously a painstaking job to restore these classics, and WB hasn't disappointed us.The rebuttal from the clearly-uninformed dweeb who wants all his cartoons immediately (GIVE ME WHAT I WANT NOW!!!) is reflective of the ignorance that abounds in a few less-enlightened individual's minds about this subject. These films were made for theaters. They aren't TELEVISION shows. As such a chronological approach would kill any prospects of a continuing set of releases, since none of the earliest cartoons bear any resemblance to what the general public wants, or would be a protfitable venture for Warner Bros. They selected sensational shorts for this first volume, and I can't wait for the second. Equally impressive are the magnificent hours of extras they have assembled which are fascinating and hysterically funny. Any TRUE fan of LOONEY TUNES is sure to be pleased by this supreme and expertly produced DVD set. An undeniable treasure-trove for fans of these great cartoons, which hasn't one false note.

Review: If they can only claim 60 cartoons per year, why has DVD been around for 7 years and they don't have more of a backlog compiled? And a harsh glad handling of what's good and what's not isn't a great statement. How many of the lack luster cartoons are in this bundle? To quote:
"About 300 of them are excellent," Feltenstein said, "300 of them are very good, 300 are good, 100 of them are OK, and 100 of them are lousy." Which did we get? I don't doubt this is good stuff, but the claims made in the CNN article don't cover my original complaint about the package. It's a taste test. People will buy it, and WB gets a way to roll out it's REAL package plans on us 3 years or so down the road where they start to bundle more and more toons, or push them together chronilogically... Or if it only pushes meager numbers, it gives them leeway for not remastering all of them. I again refer to almost ALL of WB's television offerings (Friends?) as past proof of their marketing schemes on large scale releases. They've had 7 years lead time to prep these DVD's for eventual release. They've even had the LD collection transfers to fall back on as a stop gap/test release. But they're too afraid to commit to that large of a release anymore. They don't have that faith in consumers when they pull stuff like this nowadays. Best of compilations will suffice for a while, but 6 years down the road, when we only have 1/3 of the entire collection... Will we still care about buying these? What's the ratio of good/bad claimed that we'll be getting? I'm not wanting just the good cartoons. I'm wanting all the looney tunes. poorly made ones, offensive ones, classics, controversial ones. They're our history. Releases like this don't belie plans to do this.
Release the Excellent ones, release the very good ones, etc...
And eventually market interest dwindles, and nothing more. If WB commits to release all 1100 plus shorts with this scheme, I'll gladly join in on the purchases. Before you attack me, read my original review, don't take CNN's blurb as my whole opinion.

Summary: For once, Warner could learn from Disney.
Review: I'll leave the debate over this sets very erratic content to others, but I have to take issue with Warner Home Video, who swears that "our plan to release a set of 60 cartoons each year is not just a marketing ploy -- it's as fast as we can clean up the originals." What clean up?!! Sure, the sound is clear and the colors are bright, but I was shocked by the amount of dirt, dust and cell artifacts that mar most of the cartoons in this set. Looney Tunes fans waited five years for this? What an insult. It's obvious that someone in the front office said "forget how they look, just box up a couple dozen cartoons and we'll make a mint!" Wake up WB, and take a look at the work Disney did on Snow White & some of their collections. The Looney Tune shorts are true American classics and they deserved better than this shabby treatment. Very sad.

Summary: Aaron Strader of Houston is an idiot!
Review: What a bunch of whiners! I just got done tearing through the first three discs of the set and 98% of it is pure gold. The clean up work is wonderful, the extras are really well rounded and it's a hell of a package. Compared to the TV broadcasts, these discs are night and day. Me, I'm a huge Road Runner fan. Do I want more than just the one? Of course - but that doesnt stop me from enjoying everything else either. People should just shut up and enjoy what they have instead of complaining about what they dont have. You can't please everyone all the time, and it's not even worth trying to please internet geeks. If it had every Looney Toon short ever made, they'd whine about the cover art or something just as stupid.

Review: Looks like a bunch of you whiners made the front page of CNN. Whan whan my favorite is not on the collection sniff sniff get a life already and be happy we finally have a released DVD collection of Looney Tunes. Obviously we won't get everything on the first collection and I am glad to read that many more collections are forthcoming.. I have been collecting Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies for 25 years now and this is the greatest of news that finally I'll be able to collect them on DVD. Keep up the good job Warner Bros... I'l be buying for a long time

Summary: It Ain't Got No Two Pair of Pants...
Review: ...but it'll do (to paraphrase the Oscar-winning Rabbit). I can't complain about a thing. This is a wonderful, outstanding overflowing at the brim collection of Looney Tune goodness (cartoon and extra features like "The Boys From Termite Terrace"). Okay, so it doesn't have "What's Opera, Doc?," but it wasn't on ANY of "The Golden Age of Looney Tunes" laserdisc sets. It finally showed up on the single disc "Curtain Calls" and I'm sure it'll show up in a future Gold Collection. As for me, I hope against hope that Warner Brothers will take advantage of the collector-oriented Gold Collection to eventually include classic politically incorrect Looney Tunes that have mostly been unseen for decades except on grey-market VHS tapes circulated on the collector market.

Summary: WARNER'S MASTERFUL CARTOON LEGACY AT LAST ON DVD!
Review: The golden age of Looney Tunes (1930-1950)has provided countless hours of laughter for both the young and the young at heart. That, in recent years, a select group of fun-killers sought to censor Bugs Bunny and his friends on Saturday morning prime time, speaks more about our cynical inability, as a society, to accept good humor as just that - good humor, than it does for the auspicious innocence and down right craziness under which these cartoon classics were created.
But at last, here it is; a stunning collection of 56 of Warner Brother's classic Looney Tune shorts, direct from the studio vaults and with all their politically incorrect, carrot-chomping insanity, digitally remastered for a whole new generation to experience.
THE TRANSFER: Despite advertising itself as a complete digital restoration, certain cartoons have faired better than others. For example; "Ballot Box Bunny" has been painstakingly restored. In contrast, "Scaredy Cat" exhibits an incredible amount of age related, animation cell artifacts, including dirt, specks and dust riddled throughout the original camera negative. The varying degree to which each short has been remastered speaks, perhaps in part, to the popularity of the short itself, but more importantly to executive angst over whether or not this box set will sell up to expectation. No one at Warner should be worrying. This collection has been on a good many Christmas lists for quite a few years and is sure to be one of the top sellers of the holiday season.
Over all, the transfers exhibits a nice clean, smooth image. Grain structure is more noticeable on certain shorts. Colors are fully saturated. Black and contrast levels are nicely rendered. There is some minor edge enhancement in several shorts (the white lines delineating Daffy's skin in Rabbit Seasoning shimmer)as well, there is a considerable amount of video noise that crops up in plaids and some finer detail from time to time, but nothing that will terribly distract you from falling down with side-splitting laughter. The audio is MONO but nicely cleaned up and well balanced.
EXTRAS: Where to begin: There are several extensive documentaries spread throughout this collection, dealing with everything from the establishment of the cartoon dept. to Mel Blanc's character voices and Carl Stalling's brilliant orchestrations. Certain shorts have an audio commentary, some have an isolated music/effects track and a few even have a miniature biography on their individual creation. There's also the famous television theme song, "On With The Show, This Is It", which in and of itself became an oft' quoted bit of television theme music, as well as outtakes from certain cartoon shorts and introductions that never made it beyond the drawing board. Very, very nice work, WB!
ONE PROBLEM: There should have been at least another 56 cartoons included in this premiere box set. Warner missed the mark (at least in this reviewer's opinion)by not including "One Froggy Evening" in this collection - a personal favorite that has proven itself to be an indullable piece of Americana.
BOTTOM LINE: Sufferin' succotash! What are you waiting for?!? This is a must for any DVD collector. This is definitely not 'all', folks!

Review: Are these the ENTIRE shorts or are they edited down versions like those being shown on TV? The ones on The Cartoon Network have been edited down from the original versions and things are missing. What is the status of these shorts?

Review: This is an excellent set! Did any of you fanboys THINK that WB was gonna release everything good short right out of the box?
You obvious need to take some business classes. To quote Kris Kringle, "if we got everything we wanted right away, life wouldn't be as much fun"! As for the old MGM Lasers being "complete", they were released back when MGM was a seperate entity and they owned all the pre-1947 WB cartoons. Be patient young padawans. Everything will come in time. Till then enjoy what has been given to us. Thanks Warner Bros and keep 'em coming!

Summary: Simply The Best
Review: It always amazes me to hear someone complaining about something they complained to get. Even if they did release every short at once, you would complain about the price. There is no making these people happy. Anyway, this set has got to be one of the best cartoon releases ever! I actually like this better than the Disney treasures. The colors are beautiful, bright and crisp. The sound is also great. For 50+ yr old cartoons, these still rival anything out today. Treat yourself, your kids, or your entire family. You won't be disappointed. Unless you are one of those people....
