Review: This movie is on my all time favorites list. Jack Lemmon is at his bumbling best while Julier Mills is so sweet and funny, you'll fall in love with her too. Take note of the swim sequence. You'll roll with laughter. I saw this movie when it came out in the 70s in the theater. Loved it then, love it even more now. Every time I watch it, I laugh even more. A truly great romantic comedy.

Summary: A movie ahead of its time
Review: This movie is really ahead of its time. Its a pleasant delight to dig out such movie from 1972 on a late night weekend and sip through hilarious dialogue through out the movie.
Juliet Mills gave a very natural performance in her role (Is it just me or does Juliet Mills really resemble a lot like Kristen Dunst?), not to mention Jack Lemmon, as his usual naturalness.
Clive Revill's character initially reminds a lot like the funny and cunning hotel manager from "Come September" movie but it slowly progresses into a distinctly noticeable and lovabably funny character. There's also another funny character gives almost hurt attack, its the Italian hotel boy/bearer who consider his main career title as self-proclaimed Photograper with a polaroid, blindly in love with the idea of sneaking into America after his first deportation by US Immigration department. And there are some Italian Stutt brothers with their vinery and odd family attitude and outlook, list goes on..
Out of all these comic elements there develops the century old romantic relationship between Jack and Juliet with gorgeous Italian music and surroundings.
This one is one sweet funny movie oddly overlooked and underrated for quite sometime now.

Review: This one was not thoughfully picked , but caught my eye in one of those channel surfing routines.. where just after few seconds , didn't think of any other channels or anything else.. The English translation of Italian word 'Avanti!' is 'Go Ahead' and is usually used in response to 'Permesso?' asked by any of the hotel staff while knocking at the door of your room. Released in 1972, this is Billy Wilder's yet another light comic offering where an American businessman Wendell Armbruster(Jack Lemmon) comes to Italy to pick his father's dead body. Once there he comes to know about the long kept secret of his father of having a relationship with some woman. This woman's daughter Pamela Piggott (Juliet Mills) a delightful Brit also comes to Italy to pick her mother's dead body. Wendell, a hyperactive & uptight fellow and Pamela, a loving & carefree person happen to share the same hotel and share the same reason for their Italy visit. After not-so many instances, both of them find themselves in their parent's shoes. As if their assets of love have been passed on to their offspring. At the end, the bodies of the dead are not taken back to their respective country, but buried where their love once bloomed! Amidst all the tough & good times there is one character that is distinctly noticeable is of Carlo Carlucci(Clive Revill) an efficient,clever and very helpful hotel manager. He is shown to be know-it-all and handle-it-all kinda guy. One gets a sneak peek at the Italian culture of long lunch hours, mafia ruling,a general laid back attitude of people,etc..Although the movie could have done without the nude scenes and the vineyard brothers & their unreasonable demands from Wendell. The true meaning of 'Avanti' is revealed when Piggot says it in response to Wendell's asking 'Permesso?' to kiss her. This truly is a magical moment!! The lilting music, the wit of the characters played and the locales add to the magic of this enchanting experience. I'm glad that a film picked by chance turned out to be such a pleasure and it belongs to my favourite genre of movies!

Summary: 70's mistake
Review: What went wrong with a Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon movie? I think it was a 70's thing. This movie is dated and not funny. Funny is when you at least smile at the writing or gags- so unless you call Jack and Juliet Mills nude funny...... The running joke about lunch time is tired. The scenery is gorgeous though and it must have been a fun trip for the cast but I think Avanti is a product of the free love 70's.It's too bad the other reviews here lead you to believe it's better than Some Like It Hot because it really isn't.
