Summary: The Old Testament looks very Old indeed
Review: This old-fashioned tinsel town celluloid relic is nauseating and rather corny. Charlton Heston gives an over-the-top performance as Moses once he gets divine inspiration. Prior to that he was very convincing. Yul Brynner is the prince who beats Moses to the Egyptian throne in one of the best performances of his career. He is the only actor in this entire movie that displays true histrionics throughout. John Derek is not bad as the energetic stone cutter. After that, good luck! Anne Baxter plays Anne Baxter. Cedric Hardwicke for once is ghastly and unbelievable as Pharaoh. Edward G. Robinson is the traitor to his people constructing the golden calf false idol. Vincent Price over acts. Lamely directed and produced by Cecil B. De Mille, I never liked this film for the simple reason that it looks as though it was filmed and acted in a style more suitable to 20 years earlier. The film's only saving grace is Elmer Bernstein's rousing and inspirational score and distinctively unique special effects by the innovative John P. Fulton. If you really could use some divine inspiration in your life or if you just want to see a 1930's style biblical epic (even though it was produced in the late 1950s) filmed in color I recommend it. The film takes biblical events and turns them into Hollywood's version of history somewhat effectively. However, what I personally never liked about this film was its archaic and antiquated style of direction, acting and costume design. It ruined it for me. One very effective feature of this film however is the unearthly looking special effects, which are so eerily disturbing. Another strength is that we get some idea of the magnitude that went into constructing Egyptian architecture. I think I just convinced myself to give this film another star. I prefer the VHS version over the DVD because of the surround sound.

Review: the real question you have to ask your self is what was demille putting in his pipe when he decided on the cast (apart from yul brynner) its all nice staring at anne baxter and yvonne de carlo but heston walking around like lawrence of arabia among the tribes of ancient israel wasnt this prophet supposed to be jewish? dont get me wrong or anything i am all for religious representation but defining and giving demille acclaim for social and historical accuracy? you people must be watching the wrong movie. i am a big fan of the lavish fifties epics but lately this one has been bugging me because i never really concentrated on whats going on i was too busy with my jaw agape glued to the visuals. but all my praise to yul brynner rather a fierce eyed muscular monstrous god then an all dancing king of siam.

Summary: GREAT PRINT, LOUSY SOUND
Review: THE STUDIO HAD A GREAT CHANCE HERE TO GET OUT A GREAT PRINT. tHE PICTURE IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE SEEN ON DVD. THE SOUND ON THE OTHER HAND IS HARDLY STEREO. AS A MOTION PICTURE PROJECTIONIST IN NY CITY, I WOULD BE THROWN OUT OF THE THEATER IF I PUT ON A SHOW OF THAT POOR QUALITY.SOUND HAS BECOME THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ANY SHOW AND PARAMOUNT SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER ON THIS CLASSIC.

Summary: Don't Expect a Religious Experience
Review: Funny how you recall movies that you first saw as a youth, and later see again as an adult. Some are timeless, others are not. Such is the case with The Ten Commandments. As a kid I was wowed by this movie, I even sat through a dubbed version in Italian for the benefit of my dear mamma. Must have been those "special Disney cartoon-like effects" that made such a lasting impression. The movie has become a cult classic over the years, kind of like Rocky Horror Show. Amazon.com reviewers, please spare me, this is NOT one of the greatest movies of all time by any stretch of the imagination. I must admit, I still watch this movie on occasion. When I do it's because of the cast, dialog, and overall spectacle which is pure Hollywood, certainly not to have a religious experience. The animated Prince of Egypt moved me more, and the "special effects" were far superior. Finally, I can't understand why this movie requires 2 DVDs. Yes, it's 3 hours long, but it should easily fit on a single DVD..especially since there are no extras anyway.

Summary: A Biblical splendor that only DeMille could do
Review: There was only one Cecil B. DeMille, what a shame. His spectacular movies were great marvels unto themselves. Top line stars, grandiose scenery, lavish movie settings, casts of thousands. Chuck Heston is superb as Moses, looking strong and wise and Yul Brynner looked like the Egyptian prince/king he played. I could go on and on raving about the great preformances by all of the big name stars in this. The story is one of the greatest ever told and only DeMille could pull off such an epic tale with his studio wizardry. You don't have to be Christian or understand the Bible to like this movie. It is solid entertainment the whole way through. I don't know anybody who has not seen this masterpiece and I pity those who haven't.

Summary: The Ten Commandments
Review: This is my all time favorite movie.I watch it at least three times a year and believe it or not,everytime I notice some tiny effect,or word or piece of scenery that I had missed before. It is a truly great love story.Moses and Nefertiri are really excited for each other as Ramses is for Nefretiri,and Joshua for Lilith,Dathan and Baka for Lilith and Sophora and her sisters for Moses. WOW Special effects are out of this world,and the buildings that were erected for this super epic are all DeMille.If anyone wants to watch the greatest movie of all time then view this film. It's also very touching to see Heston's son Fraser,as the infant Moses. Great viewing everyone!

Summary: Why This is One of the All-Time Popular Movies
Review: There have been other Bible-themed movies more critically praised than DeMille's 1956 epic. "Ben-Hur," "King of Kings," "The Greatest Story Ever Told" are three received high marks from reviewers throughout the land. However, none of the films have the immense popularity of "The Ten Commandments. An annual television airing garners high ratings when the film is shown around Eastertime.The chief reason is simple: THIS IS A MOVIE ABOUT SEX! Forget the "burning bush." "Disregard the plagues." "Ignore the "parting of the Red Sea." Demille and his screenwriters understood that the Bible does not shy away from this most common of all basic instincts. How can one ignore that Genesis, the first book, has a lot of "begetting" going on? In a nutshell, everyone has "THE HOTS" for someone else in this movie. Nefertiri, wife of Pharoah has designs on Moses, Baka and Dathan have got it bad for Lillith, each of Sephora's six sisters wants "a roll in the meadow" with Moses, and in a very early comment, the wife of a visiting Ethiopian king expresses her infatuation with the studly appearance of "the Prince of Egypt," much to Nefetiri's obvious disapproval. Even, near the film's end, upon construction of the "Golden Calf," a full-fledged orgy takes place. Who knew the Bible could be such "fun?"

Summary: A Rightful Justification for Technology. Praise God !
Review: A film to be admired for generations to come! This is what we've all been waiting for. This film teaches all of us a little bit of history but mostly what the Bible is saying. This is an awesome movie no matter where you live. It has all the elements for a good film and then some. I would mostly agree here with what others say on this film. Go out and get it! You won't be disappointed!

Summary: An all time CLASSIC!!!
Review: I've always loved this movie, ever since I was a kid, even though it came out some 20 to 30 years before I was born. The dialogue may seem overly dramatic to some, but that's just the way they made movies back then. Special effects aren,t very good compaired to today's standard, but then the violence is also limited compaired to today. In the old days of movie making, violence and special effects took 2nd place to meeningful dialogue and a moral lession as well as a great plot. This movie is and always will be a classic never to be remade.

Summary: CLASSIC!
Review: If you don't like this movie, you are a stone cold idiot! Easter is just not Easter without this! Charlton Heston is the only person who can play Moses. Yeah, I know the script is full of some hilarious lines (such as Edward G. Robinson saying that Moses wrote those scriptures himself, after all he was in the mountains for three days)! But hey, at the same time it is a story that really keeps your interest if you are entertained enough. I do not understand some of these reviewers who are always talking about "reality" in the movies. In this world of murder, hate, serial killers, lust and down right scandal, it somehow feels good to watch a good film without all of the "emotional" baggage you feel after the movie is over. All entertainment does not have to have a "reality" concept. Plus let's face it, this was done in the late fifties; movie studios made films for entertainment and moral decency back then. And as far as the cast is concerned Yul Brenner is a delight as "Ramses" (and sexy as hell), Edward G. Robinson is just to slimy for words as "Dathan", John Derek is way too melodramatic as "Joshua" and best of all is Anne Baxter as "Neferteri" (Oh, Moses"...let me tell you she "lusted" for the man). I'm sorry this is the one and only for me. They just don't make them like this anymore!
