Summary: 10 Stars would be better!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICALS!!!
Review: Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber did a WONDERFUL job on the staging of "Jesus Christ Superstar". It is a very touching/moving performance. I get teary-eyed every time I watch it. The music is excellent - Ted Neeley has an awesome voice that is very suitable for his role as Jesus and so does Carl Anderson who plays Judas. With this being one of my favorites, of course I got the soundtrack along with the movie and saw it on stage over 8 times...I would recommend it to ANYONE!

Summary: Maaaaaaavelous
Review: It seems hard to say, but the brilliant music was almost overscored by the message. It gives an awesome insight into the thoughts of Judas, my favorite character. The movie has come under scrutiny from "Christians," but they are just plain out wrong. It doesn't make the Bible seem trite, rather it raises it up. The fact that the story of Jesus is performed in a 70's freak out is one of the best ideas of the human race.

Summary: Where has Yvonne Elliman been all my life?
Review: I just watched this movie for the very first time. I've never seen the stage production. I'm 41 and I well remember when this film came to my hometown in '73 - growing up in the Bible Belt, I heard a lot of things about it. And none of it was true.

I was always pretty ambivalent about Jesus Christ and I'm not sure if I can say that anymore - this movie is that powerful. I'll pass on going into any in-depth discussions of the merits or faults of any of the individual performances, the set, the score, the choreography, the costuming, or the story's adherence or deviation from scripture. None of those things in and of themselves really seemed to matter anywhere near as much as the collective power of all of the above that, for me, brought to life things like love, spite, betrayal, faith, doubt, guilt, cowardice, and courage in a way few other films have ever been able to present.

I just happened to catch Jesus Christ Superstar today on AMC when I should have been out mowing the lawn. I didn't know it was on and if I had, I wouldn't have paid it any mind. I was just flipping through channels, caught the beginning, and spent the next hour and 48 minutes absolutely spellbound. "I Don't Know How to Love Him" was just a song I heard on the radio when I was a kid. Watching Yvonne Elliman perform it the way she did in the context of what was going on with Mary Magdalene actually choked me up (and sure made me want to love her!).

Many of the comments I've read here criticize this film as being dated by it's early 70's hippie images and themes. If this film is dated, well, then so is every other film that reflects the time in which it was made. Without those themes and images, how could this film possibly be? And I was glad to see that at least one Southern Baptist gave it an open-minded and positive review when he said that Christians have nothing to fear from this movie. I found that very reassuring.

Summary: Just Simply AMAZING!
Review: I bought this DVD because I remember seeing this moving when I was about 10 years old. My whole family loves this grand movie. My husband saw the play long ago and has always loved this musical. My 10 year old daughter, 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter truly enjoy watching this, plus is gives them a bible lesson. The music really keeps them interested. My 4 year old daughter sings the songs out loud, while we are shopping at the market. My 15 year old heavy metal loving son who watched this with us (under protest) LOVED IT! He now takes the DVD into his room to re-watch it. I love Ted Neeley and Yvonne Elliman, but the real favorite is the remarkable Carl Anderson (Judas) Gorgeous voice, incredible acting. This DVD will always be our family favorite!

Summary: Moving Experience
Review: I have been a fan of JCS ever since I saw a local production in the early 70's. I've owned 3 8-track sets, the musical score and 2 cd sets of the music. But I think the movie with Ted Neeley adds so much to the feeling of the music. The opening scenes where Ted Neeley is shown for the first time as Jesus has always given me chills (and I've seen this at least a dozen times!). And to me it puts the entire belief that Judas was a bad guy to rest. My children who are both 20 somethings have been as enthralled with this as I am and I feel like it makes them understand those last days better than reading a book. Very moving and very enlightening.

Summary: What's the buzz?
Review: My wife turned me on to J.C. Superstar years ago, and boy, am I glad! This dvd is a great transfer of our old copy on VHS. The sound quality is great and video quality is quite crisp.

Ted Neely and Carl Anderson rock in this production. Judas is still my favorite charachter. So misunderstood, so sure in his rightousness. Yvonne Ellman's voice is a delight. She has a great solo album, too if you want to look for it.

"I dont know how to love him" and "Whats the buzz" are two of my favorite songs. Pilate looks like Bono as the fly... What a blast this musical is!

Summary: Unusual
Review: I think the movie is very unusual in that it begins with the cast preparing to begin the play. The cast was magnificent. I don't believe that Jesus was quoted properly when he is asked by Pontius Pilot and Herod if he is God. My scripture reads that Jesus responded with the words: "I Am". But this movie was from Judas's point of view.I think it is my favorite. Ted Neely's performance as Christ made me think about the fact that Jesus was indeed human yet without sin. I love the ending when the cast gets on the bus. If you look carefully in the shadows you will see a shepherd leading a flock of sheep into the light of the sun. Jesus said that He was "the good shepherd". "I am the good shepherd, I know my sheep and my sheep know me." John 10 vs. 14. Excellent ending.

Summary: Love it
Review: I've been a fan of this movie for years. Although I don't agree with all the lerics, for example, when Jesus told the lepers to "leave him alone", I don't believe this is scriptual. or when Jesus is quoted saying, "Your words not mine" when they (Pontius pilot and Herod) acuse him of saying that he is God. I believe in reality Jesus replied, "I am". Still in all, I absolutely love the movie. The cast is the best!

Summary: Great going
Review: I was never a Jesus Christ Superstar fan, but my mum was, and she forced me to watch this with my younger bro. I was surprised. It was good. Ted Neely looked, well, Jesus-like. 'Judas' had that strong voice. But Yvonne, well, she isn't the best Mary you could find in the world. But the rest are quite good.

Summary: My FAVORITE movie
Review: JCS is my all-time FAVORITE movie. The music is awesome. I've owned the soundtrack for years as well as the movie on VHS. I first saw this movie in 1976 and have loved it ever since. When my daughter was 5 she and I started watching this every year as we put up the Christmas tree. She knows every word, breath, pause. We were fortunate to be able to see JCS on stage in Boston with Ted and Carl in the mid/late 90's - what a treat! They were wonderful!

I have worn out my VHS copy and was thrilled to see JCS on DVD. I just bought it and will watch it the day it arrives. I like another reviewers idea of watching this every Easter, at a minimum!!! If you haven't seen this movie, at least go out and rent it!!
