Summary: Planet of the apes-The Evolution
Review: If you are a fan of the Planet of the Apes this is the set for you. The films special effects hold up suprisingly well in this age of computer imagery. The DVD set includes the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" hosted by the now deceased Roddy McDowall, which is packed full of interesting tid bits. The budget and special effects lessen with each outing; however you will not be disapointed by the social political satire that seems modern 30 years later. The DVD transfer is widescreen and seems flawless compared to the TV versions we have been stuck with. Enjoy this pop culture series for what it is...a mind numbing fluff ride of fun.

Summary: Take yer stinking paws off me! I'm gonna order this Now!
Review: I have watched these five movies many times on my low quality barely audible pan and scan vcr tapes and loved every minute! 'Escape' was the missing link that tied 'Beneath' and 'Conquest' together. I had only recently recorded 'Escape', not previously even knowing it exsisted! What a treat! Now it all makes sense! The five stories are tied together very well and with depth that just isn't in sci-fi movies anymore. The only inconsistancy(a small one) is that the first movie takes place in 3978 the second in 3955 even though the rescue mission astronaut 'Bret' found 'Taylor' -after- Taylor's landing in July, 3978 therefore it should've taken place at close to the same year or later, not earlier. Over looking this very minor thing the series is exceptional! I am going to buy this widescreen saga at once!

Summary: YOU MANIACS! YOU PUT IT ON DVD!
Review: Is PLANET OF THE APES the perfect film series? Let's look at the evidence--

Unlike BATMAN and other film series that followed it, all of the PLANET OF THE APES films stand out as strong, fierce entertainment with important social messages. Often compared to STAR WARS in its scope and in terms of the story of the destiny of a young man and the liberation of a certain group, APES surpasses Lucas' classic space opera in many ways. Throughout the series, Charlton Heston (BEN-HUR), Ricardo Montalban (STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN), Roddy McDowall (HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY), and the rest of the cast give compelling, Oscar-worthy performances. The make-up is top notch, and the scripts are full of compelling dialogue and wonderful themes. Each film has a shocking and/or compelling ending, making the films even more of a joy to watch. So, yes, POTA is the perfect film series. Some of the best stuff to be committed to celluloid. Ever.

Summary: THE BEST SCI-FI FILMS SINCE STAR WARS!
Review: Ok, I had never seen these films and was skeptical at first, but a friend of mine loved them so I bought the Planet of the Apes Evolution dvd set. After seeing the first one I went ape nuts! I loved the movie! Great cast of characters including Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Shakespearean actor Maurice Evans. I only wish I hadn't known the ending so it would have been a total shock. The sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, wasn't quite as good as the first and had lots of elements that could have been seen on a 60's Star Trek episode, but was still very enjoyable. The third film, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, is my second favorite. This time the main characters aren't the humans that we routed for in the first two, but the apes themselves. Kim Hunter and Roddy McDowall give their best performances ever in this film. There is even comedy relief which is very well done. Then there's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, my least favorite of the series. This film is good, but the logic behind the apes evolution from just your average zoo animal into upright standing, almost human, creatures in only 20 years is just unimaginable. There are a few good points that tie this one into the others really well however. The final film, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, is pretty good and has a great ending for the entire film series. But there is also the bonus 6th disc. A documentary on the entire Apes saga narated by the late Roddy McDowall with lots of great info. These films spawned a huge franchise of merchandise, tv series, and cartoon series. I now am going crazy buying Planet of the Apes comics, toys, and cd's whenever I find them. And in 2001 a brand new Planet of the Apes movie is coming out, a remake of the original directed by Tim Burton. If it's as good as the original then what Episode 1 did for Star Wars, this new Apes film will do for the Planet of the Apes franchise. We may be seeing lots of Apes in the near future. Hope you enjoy the films as much as I did!

Summary: Battle for the Planet of the Apes Best Sequel
Review: This is the fourth and best sequel to "Planet of the Apes." John Huston as the Lawgiver brings the entire series full-circle. J. Lee Thompson brilliantly directed the incredible battle sequences. This is a highlight of the film as the mutating humans attack Ape Village via yellow school buses laden down with an arsenal of weaponry in a totally preposterous sequence, which brings the house down. Roddy McDowall as the stalwart Caesar defends his rigid code of ethics with subdued dignity. J. Lee Thompson finally achieved the superlative adjective of auteur in front of his name and deservedly so with this underrated classic as he reflected the essence of 1970's ambiguities of its society with this impressive parable. Claude Akins also stared as the leader of the misguided renegade gorillas who is somehow redeemed for his misdeeds in a scene of pathos.

Summary: The APES are back!
Review: I remember watching parts of this on TV as a kid, and took me 10 years just to find a complete VHS version. I've had those lousy bunch of tapes for 10 years and its now totally degraded. This time they ought to last longer on DVD!! What a classic, just like old star trek shows. I hope our kids can appreciate these older movies prior to the era of CG. Those ape masks/makeup are just so cool, they don't seem to suffer from ageing considering what Hollywood can offer today. More APES please!

Summary: rated G?
Review: Great story. But rated G? How? You have full rear nude shots of men and cursing including Charleston Heston screaming "GD". How could this be rated G? I've only watched the first in this collection and I'd personally rate it PG-13.
