Rating: Summary: The Real Cleopatra Review: well this movie isn`t the best , it protrays cleopatra in a really bad way. i gave it these stars becsause i love egypt(1 star) and billy zane(2 stars) they need more acting abiliteis.they make her look like a 25 cent well u know . for those of you belive in past lives , i was cleopatra. they make me look bad in every way, and they for got three of my children and the fact that marc antony comited sucicide and died in my arms , i still flinch at the memory of his death.
Rating: Summary: Overall, not bad! Review: I have to admit that this is not the best movie I have ever seen, but it definitely has its moments. The acting is pretty good, especially by the two male leads, Timothy Dalton and most especially Billy Zane. Zane I thought was most phenomenal. He brought a passion to his role that I have never seen before. There are two moments in the movie that captivate me, and both were by him. The first is when he professes his love for Cleopatra on the beach. What an amazing scene. It gives me goosebumps ever time I see it because it is so passionate and realistic. You really get a sense of how he feels, and the way in which he delivers his speech is remarkable. I wish someone would say those words to me that way. The second is at the end of the movie when Mark Anthony is dying. Zane delivers one line that defines the whole movie, and again the way he says it is superb. I cry every time , for it gets me so emotional! The one line is, "I'll be waiting for you in the next life." I can't over how much that one line gets to me, and in my opinion, is worth enough to buy the movie just for that one scene. It is that amazing!
Rating: Summary: Good movie, but where was the real Cleopatra? Review: Like everyone else has said, this movie has probably the best scenery, costumes, backgrounds, etc. as any made-for-TV movie that I've ever seen. And while it was quite entertaining and made it possible to learn about the most important historical information concerning Cleopatra VII, it was incredibly lacking in its depiction of Cleo's true personality and spirit. Leonor Varela really came across as a bratty, stuck-up, very moody (her character's personality was too variable) and not too intelligant queen, and the movie only glamourizes her looks and sex appeal. This doesn't play up her true best qualities, which were her incredible intelligence (this is what gave her sex appeal)--which included her ability to fluently speak 9 languages, and her strength as well as enchanting and original personality. Anyway, back to the movie. I was disappointed in the lack of the true Cleopatra, which would have made the movie so much better, but quite impressed with the chemistry between her and Antony, as well as the acting of most everyone else in the movie. Overall, a great movie that I am recommending.
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary depiction of Cleopatra's Era Review: If you are looking for historical accuracy this is probably not the place. Particularly the potrayal of Marc Anthony seems too weak of caracter. Apart from that, it is indeed a wonderful depiction of the era of Cleopatra. I believe that Leonor Varela was a wonderful choice for Cleopatra, and truly represents women of the new millenium. Timothy Dalton is superb in his depiction of Julius Cesar. It is probably the best potrayal ever of Cleopatra in film. I highly recomend it for those of you interested in the era.
Rating: Summary: A barbaric farse Review: The most barbaric and illiterate version of Roman history. The cast acts like so many drunken California college campus dwellers having a hysterical domestic scandal. Idiotic socialist overtones reeking of political correctness. Everybody, throughout the movie, calls Octavian "Octavius". The essentially Greek Cleopatra is portrayed as pseudo-Egyptian chauvinist. My impression is that they didn't even bother to hire a consultant on Latin name spelling. Terrible. Typical asinine attempt of re-fitting history acording to the 16-years-old-six-pack-Joe's image of it. This film made me ashamed of human race: again.
Rating: Summary: 1 star for 1 star Review: This movie was quite an inaccurate version of Cleopatra, perhaps it was intentional. The 1 star is for Timothy Dalton and only him! His performance as Julius Caesar is fantastic. Leonor Varela who plays Cleopatra seemed at the beginning of the movie to be lacking tremendously in the acting department. To my great relief she made some progress later in the movie. She is beautiful but needs a lot of work if she is to be respected. Billy Zane was okay as Mark Antony, perhaps if his character's script was of more substance he would have done a much better job! Apart from the fantastic costumes and Timothy Dalton, this movie deserves just a C.
Rating: Summary: A shame that Margaret George's name is associated with it.. Review: After reading the spectacular novel upon which this movie is based I of course couldn't wait to see the movie. It was so unfortunate to find the storyline completely deviated and the acting atrocious. Many of the other reviews of this movie say exactly what i want to say so i will leave it at that. Beautiful people, scenery, etc...but absolutley no substance or integrity to all of the research Margaret George did for her novel. I hope seeing this movie doesn't lead anyone to beleive that the novel is even closely related.
Rating: Summary: Good movie Review: A good movie filled with love, action, adventure and romance. The story of Cleopatra is well known but this is one of the best film versions ever made!
Rating: Summary: Not historical, seems like lots of scenes are missing Review: I saw this movie on TV. I thought the costumes and scenerey were great but chunks of history were cut out when they made the movie. I recommend that you read the book it was based on, The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margret George. It is much better, and captures the truth of Cleopatra as closely as possible.
Rating: Summary: The best movie ever! Review: Billy Zane is the hottest, sexist and all around best actor out there today. His tears, sexual energy and war scenes made the movie 10 times better. But who could go wroung with a story like Cleopatra? I recomend this movie to anyone and everyone!
