Summary: Not as bad as I thought.
Review: I read the reviews AFTER I ordered the set and they were already on their way. At first I considered returning them unopened to get a full refund but decided against it. I'm glad I kept them. After watching the DVD's I couldn't figure out what all of the fuss was about. With the exception of Full Metal Jacket, the quality is not all that bad and 2001 is excellent. All are better than VHS and the sale price was about the same as a VHS box set. Too much complaining and not enough enjoying. If you are a fan of these movies in general, you will enjoy the set.

Summary: Where are the rest... ?!?
Review: Okay, as for the quality of the videos actually in the collection, I have no complaints. The Shining, it has been verified, was originally not widescreen and I can't find a widescreen version of Full Metal Jacket so I'm gonna guess the same is true of it. That's okay. But WHERE, oh ye gods WHERE are Kubrick's movies from before 1962?!? Apparantly MGM has released The Killing, Killer's Kiss, and Paths Of Glory simultaneously but NOT in a set, and Spartacus has been left COMPLETELY out, I can only guess this being because Kubrick hated it. Couldn't we get just a LITTLE more unified before we call something the Stanley Kubrick COLLECTION? Please.

Summary: Watching a Kubrick movie is more like reading a book.
Review: The most common thing that you hear about a film that was converted over from a book is that the book was better, this is not so with a Kubrick movie (Maybe with the exception of Spartacus since the stars and the producers tampered with his movie). I read most of the novels that inspired movies for the late Kubrick and I was 100% impressed with the way Kubrick managed to convert the ideas to film. And in some cases he even adds more depth then the novel manages to achieve (in 2001 the book, in comparison to the movie, the two astronauts [Frank and Dave] have very human characteristics- in comparison to the movie which Kubrick gives them no depth at all showing the dehumanization of man kind). I highly reconmend any of his movies to anyone who is willing to look at the films as something more than just some movie.

Summary: Kubrick Would be Ashamed and Enraged at this DVD!
Review: First, DO NOT buy this DVD set!!! If you want any of these movies, get them individually, even though that will cost more per DVD. (I'm assuming, of course, that the individual DVD releases of these movies do not suffer from the absolutely horrible sound quality that this bargain-basement collection set does.) Not only is the sound quality shamefully terrible, but the volume of the sound output is about one-half that of any other DVD -- don't forget to turn your A/V system's volume back down before you play another DVD or you'll likely wake the dead (Kubrick included, perhaps). Also, the video quality is really not very good (not nearly as poor as the sound quality, though). In short, I gave this one star only because zero stars was not an option. Don't waste your money as I did.

Summary: That's how they were made, folks!
Review: I have read all your reviews, and like you, I was sorely disapointed with the mono sound and full-screen formatting of THE SHINING and FULL METAL JACKET. I wrote one of the first (scathing) reviews of this video on June 29th. I did read one review, however, which said that THE SHINING was originally shot in the full screen format. That can't be true, I thought to myself, because how would they have shown it in the theaters on the big screen? Even so, I decided to do a little research on the matter (the easy way) by asking someone who knows. In this case my expert was Murray Kraft, creator of a web site devoted entirely to THE SHINING. As it turns out, THE SHINING was indeed filmed in the full-screen aspect ratio. When they showed it in the theaters, they used matting. As I understand it, this means that they actually cut off the top and bottom of the picture in order to achive the correct aspect ratio to fit the big screen. Basically, the bottom line is that the DVD shows the entire picture as it was filmed, and shows more of it than was shown in theaters, not less. And as for the sound being in mono, this is also true to the original theatrical experience. I read somewhere that Kubrick intended for the sound to be in mono because movies are shown on a two-dimensional screen and the sound should match. I get the feeling that Kubrick is very much a purist. He probably wanted people to focus on the characters and content of a film and not on gee-whiz sound and special effects. There are plenty of crappy movies out there with incredible special effects. These movies are like broken-down cars with awesome paint jobs. Kubrick is all about substance. His movies are classics and I wouldn't change a thing. I take back the things I said in my first review.

Summary: Don't be fooled!
Review: The Stanley Kubrick Colletion is a set of the finest films from a great director. But do not be fooled by the techical information which says "ASPECT RATIO(S): Widescreen Letterboxed." Several of the films are NOT widescreen such as the important FULL METAL JACKET and THE SHINNING. Both of these films are still presented in a FULL FRAME 1.33:1 format. So if you are wanting the original theater release format of these two, you still have to keep waiting.

Summary: I want more!!
Review: The work of this man was far beyond anything I have ever seen!! My only complaint was I have not gotten a chance to see "Paths of Glory", "Killer's Kiss" or "The Killing". I was disappointed to learn they were not in the set I had purchused.

The films are presented with breath-taking effect and passion. I feel euphoric when I watch "A Clockwork Orange".

Summary: Robbed of the benefits of dvd...
Review: I concur with colleagues in saying that this collection leaves much to be desired. If you are looking to finally enjoy Full Metal Jacket in all of its widescreen and surround sound splendor, as I was, you will be woefully disappointed. I think that Warner Bros. owes all of us the quality films we deserve. Despite all of that, I do think that 2001 was the only worthy feature-filled film offered in this collection.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: The overall rating should be 0 stars
Review: Excluding the reviews prior to the set coming out, all ratings were 1 star, except for 1. The higher ratings were pre-viewing, mostly anticipation. DVD viewing is supposed to have special features. If one wanted to just see a movie, they would purchase VHS. The poor quality of this product shameful for the DVD industry. Products should be monitored before it gets released. Everyone who purchased the set deserves a REFUND if they want. The refund should come from the people that released it.
