Summary: IT'S FINALLY ON DVD!
Review: I have viewed the limited edition dvd of e.t. and i have to say, it has never looked this great. I was not a real big fan of the re-release but i decided to watch that version on dvd and it looked and sounded fantastic! The image was flawless, I mean there was some grain but not a whole lot. There was a lot of work put into getting this to DVD. What I do like about this set is that on Disc One you get the 2002 Director's Cut and on Disc Two you get the original theatrical release, because those of us who did not like the changes (the new scene was great, that was the only plus), can see the original version which on DVD doesn't look as good but it still looks very nice and the sound is good. I did not get a look at the special features but I have to say that this is a must have for every collection, I know that I will definitely be getting it. HURRY: This will be gone after December 31st (hence the reason why it is called Limited Collector's Edition, after then it will be very hard to find unless someone sells it on Ebay). GET THIS MOVIE! It is the BEST FAMILY FILM EVER!

Summary: Thank God for small miracles
Review: Steven Spielberg and the folks behind this DVD release have finally seen the light. Both editions (the 2002 and the original, "terrorist" line and all) will now be included on the 'cheap' versions of the DVD. This is a great decision, and I think shows that our (the fans') response to the original plans were well-heeded by those in charge. Never underestimate the power of the fan! Some people in Hollywood DO still pay attention to us.

Summary: Changes in the DVD
Review: If you read other reviews posted here, they say that this does not included the original movie, but the specs clearly say the second disc is the 1982 addition. This is because Steven Spielburg resently changed his mind and decided to included the origingal version with the special addition so that people wouldn't forget the original (as if that is possible). You do not have to shell out the big bucks for the full set to get both versions of the movie like previous reviews stated.

Summary: Universal Gets It Right!
Review: Universal announced on October 15th that the ORIGINAL 1982 VERSION of the film WILL BE INCLUDED on this edition, rather than only on the more expensive "Ultimate Collector's Edition." It looks like the cries of fans and consumers have finally been heard and Universal is doing the right thing. Now, YOU DON'T HAVE TO FORK OVER [X] FOR THE ULTIMATE EDITION TO GET THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE FILM WE ALL LOVE.

Summary: What a priviledge.....
Review: The 2002 version of "ET" was an unfortunate mistake. Political correctness ran amok, and Mr. Spielberg became a prisoner of some misguided bleeding-hearts.On the other hand.... But please, take some time to listen to the string of miracles that John Williams assembled for it's magnificent, Academy Award winning score. In 1982, interest in symphonic music was slowly pulling out of what seemed then an irrevocable downward spiral. The score for "Star Wars" had sparked a revival of interest in orchestral performance that later on allowed ensembles like the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and L'Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal to capitalize on the "rediscovery" of virtuoso playing in the works of Mahler, R. Strauss, Shostakovich and others. Audiences became acquainted with the un-familiar through the familiar. WHAT A TRIUMPH for good music! This is clearly a credit to Mr. William's unerring melodic gift and his demanding but also extraordinary handling of orchestral color and resources. The glories of the score for "ET" only confirmed the strength of what the Maestro had achieved for classical music. Audiences, and young people in particular, were listening again. I ought to know. I was one of them. Better yet: WATCH AND LISTEN!You will not be disappointed. Open your heart a little bit, and Maestro Williams and Mr. Spielberg will take care of the rest. What a priviledge it has been to be alive to listen to this music and to watch this movie, when they were still new. We all, sorry enough, missed the premieres of Beethoven's 9th, Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Wagner's "Ring". How will audiences feel about this music/film 100 years in to the future? Will they be sorry too, to have missed its premiere performance? I wonder... Thank you Maestro Williams. Thank you Mr. Spielberg.

Review: This correction was probably posted by somebody else already, I just wanted to let people know about it. The 2-disc does come with the original and the special edition. You don't need to get the Ultimate Gift Set to watch the original film. Here's the quote from Spielberg himself:
"When people buy E.T. I want them to know they have the original movie, not just for collectors and aficionados, but for everybody who remembers it and wants to continue remembering it just that way...So buy your copy and don't boycott it cause it'll only be available for 10 weeks!!

Summary: Steven Spielberg and the E.T. DVDs
Review: 'E.T.' is a movie worth owning and remembering. Steven Speilberg has given all fans the option of remembering it as they first saw it, whether that be in 1982 or in 2002, on which DVD they decide to purchase. A newspaper article in today's (10/16/02) CNN states that Steven Spielberg has arranged for BOTH DVD releases of E.T. to contain both movies. Mr. Speilberg is quoted as saying "My intention was never to replace the original film. When people buy 'E.T.' I want them to know they have the original movie, not just for collectors and aficionados, but for everyone who remembers it and wants to continue remembering it just that way." While I understand other's opinion that the changes made for 2002 were extreme and detracted from the film itself, I have to respect the director's desire to revisit one of his works and use modern technology to bring it closer to his original vision. And as a parent who has to teach a young child that strangers should be avoided - unless that stranger happens to be a police officer, firefighter or EMT, I can appreciate wanting to make the police seem a little less intimidating to kids. I wouldn't have made the same choice, but again I have to respect the director's choices. Whatever version I prefer, or my child ultimately prefers, both will be available regardless of the DVD I choose to purchase. I am glad the Mr. Spielberg brought Universal around to his thinking on this matter. As to the additional material available on the 'Ultimate' set - I think I'll wait until the release details are finalized before I dismiss it as being solely profit minded.

Summary: An incredibly overrated movie.
Review: Being born in the E.T. generation, one might expect me to be more nostalgic about this film. The problem is that E.T. is one of the most boring, emotionally shallow movies of the last 30 years. It's only point is to make the viewer depressed over the terrible treatment of an alien being. The creature E.T. is completely unlovable and unbelievable. Spielburg is very good at pushing the viewers emotional buttons, but little else. This movie lacks substance and direction, and I've never felt more bored than when watching this movie.
