Summary: When Law & Order Criminal Intent is good it is Very Good
Review: I expected to enjoy the DVD of the first year and I have very, very much. Not only have I been able to re-enjoy shows that I had seen, but I was agreeably surprised with those that I missed. Without giving away plots, I hope, my favorite was "Poison": The sheer unswavering, selfish, determination of the lady was very interesting and made the show completely entertaining. There were others as well that I had not seen [and there were more than I had realized]. I am very glad that I sent for Law & Order Criminal Intent 1st Year.

Summary: The First (cocks head) Year
Review: I have serious criminal intent towards Vincent D'Onofrio's pretentious performance. "Sometimes you juggle two balls when acting, some times up to five" boasts Mr D'Onofrio. I live in hope that one of them will fall and he'll slip on it, flying head first through that ubiquitous double mirror they always seem to have in interrogation rooms. He constantly makes strange stick insect-like poses, or wobbles his head from side to side while approaching his suspects from under their chins, gurning like a piranha. I presume this is to unnerve the suspect. It could also be the preening vanity of an actor who likes to do 'good work'. Mr D'Onofrio's father is certainly impressed with his son's ouevre: "He tells them to stay out of his way and let him work". That may explain it. It could also be that he's wobbling and jerking around the room so much that they can't even get his attention to curtail his silliness.

The series itself is the usual formuliac dirge that is clogging up the airwaves in Britain, as well as the States.

Summary: Its Already Been Done
Review: I liked this series better when it was called, Columbo, and starred Peter Falk.

Summary: Don't miss it!
Review: I received this DVD collection on a Thursday and by Monday I had watched all 22 episodes! (A lot of late nights after the kids went to bed!) I had missed a number of 1st season episodes because I had a new baby in 2001, and I'm glad that I was able to catch up through this collection. This is the best TV show since "Homicide: Life on the Streets" went off the air. Well-acted, well-written, a true joy to watch. I hightly recommend it.

Summary: Demented Columbo
Review: I thoroughly enjoy every episode of "Law and Order:CI," because of Vincent D'Onofrio's creepy, neurotic portrayal of a New York Homocide Detective. It's that "I might go psychotic any second now" edge that separates these stories from their moralistic (SVU) and wisecracking Law & Order counterparts. Kathryn Erbe and Jamey Sheridan must keep a straightjacket and a syringe of thorazine close on hand. Suspects probably plead preference for beatings with rubber hoses rather than confinement in interogation rooms with D'Onfrio. If Peter Falk grew a foot taller and carried around his wife's head in a jar instead of a basset hound, he'd be starring in "Law and Order: Criminal Intent." Bravo!

Summary: The most entertaining and interesting show on television
Review: I would say that Law and Order: CI is, without a doubt, the best Law and Order spinoff and it is always a thrill to watch Det. Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) engage in another intellectual cat-and-mouse game with a brilliant, twisted killer. CI is, quite simply, must see tv.

The first year had the show proving itself admirably. Goren and his partner, Alexandria Eames (Katherine Erbe) quickly become a modern-day Holmes and Watson duo, with Goren as the seemingly omniscient, stalwart detective and Eames lending a lot of humanity to the proceedings. Jamey Sheridan plays Goren and Eames' CO, a buttoned-down, more traditional cop. Courtney B. Vance plays the 'Order' aspect alone as Assistant District Attourney Carver. The leads have an undeniable chemistry, which adds to the show greatly. As a Law and Order show, however, it is the stories that make the show. The show stays true to the "ripped from the headlines" stories that made the original series so unique, but it broke with tradition by declaring that you would see the crime from the criminal's point of view. Although at first I was a bit skeptical about how this device would turn out, but it actually made the show more complex as seeing the crime would not solve it. Also, the show explored its characters, protagonists and villains alike, in a much more psychological manner than had been consistently done in either of the previous series. Finding out the motive for the crime was often more fascinating than a simple whodunit. This season laid a firm foundation for future seasons but is in itself a worthy buy.

Quite simply, this is a show for people who like cultured, sophisticated dramas that challenge them to think about society. It is a show for those who appreciate a good character study and multilayered crime dramas. Above all, though, it is a show for anyone who can enjoy a great yarn and expertly crafted plot twists.

Summary: a great addition to the L&O franchise
Review: I'm a huge fan of the original Law & Order. Criminial Intent does not disappoint! It's approach is a little different from the original with more emphasis on the police investigative work and the criminals and less emphasis on the legal side. Nevertheless the formula works great. The cast especially D'Onofrio, and the well written stories make Law & Order Criminal an excellent series. I highly recommend the purchase of this DVD collection.
