Summary: a master piece
Review: This movie and "dragon inn" are indisputably the best kongfu movies and arguably among the best of all movies ever made. It is excellent in every aspect -- the overall directing, the mystery, the atmosphere, the personalities, the scenery ... The acting is also among the best. BTW, a previous reviewer said Brigitte Lin is a "lesser known" star -- that is very inaccurate. Lin is a huge star (at least among Chinese). You should see her in "dragon inn", she kicks axx! Anyway, I've seen this movie many times, and loved it.

Summary: What's a Swordman?
Review: Ridiculous can describe the fight scenes and the subtitling at once. I have a video tape copy of the Swordsman II, it's a great movie so I was really excited about upgrading to DVD, but the subtitling makes this movie unwatchable. I've seen it, I know what this movie's about! Unless you speak Chinese you won't have any idea what's going on in the version by Mei Ah Laser Disc company. Get the Tai Seng VHS version. I could have done a better job and I speak neither Cantonese or Mandarin. Whoever did this knows equally as much English. But it starts right there on the cover, what's a Swordman? Ridiculous.

Summary: What happened?
Review: I just bought this DVD from Amazon on the strength of positive reviews all over the net and Chinese friends who recommend this film or have it in their movie collection.

As a film, it looks beautiful and has some of the most intricate swordplay scenes and imaginative fantasy elements I've ever seen in a film. Among the long list of captivating characters/moments - ninjas flying through the air on giant shurikens, a character named Blue Phoenix who shoots snakes from her sleeves, sword fights where swords magically spin around and fight on their own, a male character who fights with hooks and has the ability to absorb the lifeforce of other humans, a sexually ambiguous enemy whose weapon of choice is a needle and thread - it's basically loaded with all the stuff that makes HK fantasy flicks such an trip to watch.

Unfortuantely for English speakers, this movie has to have the worst subtitling job I've ever seen in my life. I just finished watching this one all the way through and I have no clue what just happened. The subtitles read like a nonsensical array of bad grammar and gibberish that appear for less than a second at a time. Basically the only thing you can get out of them without putting in major mental work are the characters names.

The good thing is that the movie is exciting enough for me to want to watch it again and again. Maybe I'll understand a little bit more this time. But damn, I really want to kill the fool who wrote those subtitles.

Summary: Great jet li movie but not his best
Review: Jet LI plays young swordsman Ling in this epic tale. He loves wine and woman and through out the film he wants to find the strongest wine. Besides being a drunk in this movie he does pull off some super fast swordplay. This movie will have you rewinding fight scenes to see what exactly happened. Even in slow motion it's hard to follow. I think they sped the film up too fast in some areas, but besides that it's a decent movie...

Summary: One of the best HK movie....Brigitte Lin steals the show
Review: This is one of my personal favorite HK movie. I wanted to get the DVD movie, but because of all the bad reviews about how horrible the subtitles is, I got the VHS version. This is HK movie at it's best. Tsui Hark is one of the best producer/director there is in my mind. Ching Siu-Tung is also a great director and action director. Jet Li was great, but Brigitte Lin steals the show with her mesmerizing stares. I just hope she will come out of retirement and act again.

Summary: best hk special effects award
Review: This movie is my all-time favorite action movie more or less no matter who stars in it the true star is definitley director TSUI HARK who pulls off magic with this amazing movie.I own the DVD movie and while the subtitles may sometimes not reflect some phrases exactly they still get the job done.Back to the fight scenes, which are quite simply the best I have EVER SEEN period. They are just too fast and fluid to believe and when I say that I don't mean too fast for the viewer unless wearing glasses I mean you can see every character movement and wont be able to see a wire in sight and everything looks so fantasy like yet so real at the same time that it looks almost like an awesome hand drawn anime,in fact that would be a good description of this movie anime meets kungfu. In short a master-piece that must be seen to be believed don't take anyones word for it you must ee it yourself to believe it!

Summary: Great movie but poor translation into video
Review: This movie is one of the best Hong Kong movies, yet the poor translation into video format made me to give only 4 stars. But, the movie itself deserves more than 5 stars. Jet Li and Bridgette Lin are combied together in this historic martial art masterpiece. The movie contains fantastic and one of the best fighting scenes and also decent story lines. Actually, this is the sequel from swordsman 1. So, if you want to fully enjoy this masterpiece, I suggest starting from the first one. The first sequel was a good movie too. If you haven't seen this movie yet, then you are really lucky, because you can enjoy this great movie now. Unfortunately, I already saw this movie, so I have to wait for long time to come out another great movie like this movie. But, it is really hard to see a decent movie like Swordsman 2. That means I have to wait really long long time.

Summary: Bad subtitles/wonky audio.
Review: It's great that they decided to redo the subtitles in bright white w/black borders so that they could actually be read, unlike in the VHS print. It's too bad, however, that they didn't find somebody who spoke English to do the translation. The redone subtitles are grammatically worse than the original, to the point that they are completely nonsensical; even if you try to deduce what they might have meant from prior knowledge of the movie, they are still incomprehensible.

It's almost insulting that they care so little of their English speaking viewers, and worse, it is very distracting.

I also experienced weird doubling/echoing artifacts with some of the music tracks near the end of the film (not sure if this was my player or not, but I kind of doubt it).

Combine the two and you end up with a pretty good film on a crappy DVD.
