Summary: a beautiful experience
Review: I first saw this movie a long time ago so it some nostalgic value for me, but when I viewed the DVD with all the extra footage and a widescreen ratio- WOW. It still holds up very well as a beautiful drama. Normally I can't stand drama movies that move this slowly but the actors are extremely believable and the setting is awesome. I recommend this movie for an afternoon with bad weather, watch it with your girlfriend.

Summary: Water, Water Everywhere
Review: I have never been so blown away by any film's ending as I was by this one. It's worth it to sit through hours of the most gorgeous underwater cinematography (I've) ever seen just to get to the conclusion. I have seen a lot of visually stunning movies in my pursuit of an engrossing experience but this tops them all. Regardless of your opinion of the caliber of some of Luc Besson's other efforts (5th Element comes to mind) you really should at least rent this movie. It's a shame that most video stores that stock it do not stock the Director's Cut. It is the story of a man, a free-diver by trade, obsessed by dolphons. Allusions are made throughout to his supernatural connection to this special mammal. Rosanna Arquette falls in love with him and watches his attachment to the sea and the dolphins in it grow until it threatens to consume their relationship.

Summary: BLUE-BLUER-BLUEST
Review: I have been using THE BIG BLUE in my marine biology classes for the last 12 years (I use NEVER CRY WOLF in my biology classes and GORILLAS IN THE MIST in all my zoology classes)..... for a pre-Christmas vacation treat and escape from the tedious work load. Well, after seeing all versions in all modes (BIG SCREEN / VHS / BIG SCREEN(Director's Cut) / DVD )I have to make a choice which is BLUE is the BLUEST .... Now of course, just like falling in love, the "first is always the sweatest", the use of the Bill Conte's synthesized air-flute which is ("Remembering a Heart Beat"/E. Serra) so crucial to the film in it's ever returning call to Jacques and his "Other (IT'SA BETTER PLACE" World" makes the American version a shorter package. The editing is not perfect but good. But, as I sat through the longer DIRECTOR'S CUT I said ....... boy, that and this and that sure could be cut and the Serra score felt choppy in parts and then I returned to that haunting Conte air flute and the dolphin in the night ( the one who didn't feel so good in captivity - like Jacques )......... and then I realized - "my first BLUE was my BEST and BLUEST BLUE"..... and the ending leaves the classes with much discussion. THEY LOVE IT and I LOVE THEM LOVING IT. And the meaning ....... that's an easy one - in this world there are those who try and conquer (Enzo) Nature and there are those who live in HARMONY with it (Jacques) - the choice and ending are obvious whether or not he lives or dies (American version) ................ and that dolphin and call is in all of us.

Summary: The film that gives justice to the sea.
Review: I love explosions, I love action, I love sci-fi. You will not find these things in this film, but it touched me like no other. I can associate with this film because I grew up in an island in Greece...I can see through this film the tranquility of the Greek islands and, combined with the beautiful music, it reminded of my younger years. The sun burning the mediterranian shores, the clear blue sea, the quietness of the sea. All of these things are true and I am glad that the film attempted to contrast the difference between the "modern way of living" and the things that seem to matter - tranquility, beautiful surroundings and values.

Summary: A visual tour de force
Review: I love Luc Besson films. There. I've said it and I'd say it again because it's true.

That out of the way I can tell you about this film. It's a stunning visual masterpiece. This film is shot beautifully and with genius. Admittedly, the story is weak. It is very weak. It's not even technically or historically accurate. But the visuals are amazing. And the performance by Jean Reno of an arrogant world champion free diver is equally amazing. In fact, the entire cast does very well in this film. I remember being impressed with Rosanna Arquette when I first saw it.

There are some people who will like this film and there are those who will hate it. I suggest renting it before you buy to see which type of person you are. Having said this, the only recommendations I am comfortable giving are those based on the technical merits of the DVD itself.

As for technical details, I have this to say: This DVD is nearly perfect. It exhibits few MPEG II artifacts -- and one has to consciously look for those it does exhibit. The picture is clean and clear. The sound is excellent.

The one weak point is the user interface. I haven't decided whether I like it or not. It's as quirky as the film itself. Otherwise, I love this DVD (and I'm one of those annoying people who prefer 12-inch LaserDiscs).

I give this DVD my highest possible technical reccomendation. I've never once regretted getting it. If you love the movie, I'm certain you'll love this DVD.

Summary: I just love Bill Conti's music better
Review: I absolutely love this movie. However, I am American and I probably fell in love with it more because of the music than the actual movie (though I do love the movie also). Luc Besson did an excellent job. I am glad he changed the music from Eric Serra to Bill Conti for the American version. It would however, have been nice to see the full length with the Bill Conti music. I have heard both soundtracks and in my mind, Bill Conti created the only music for this film. I won't be buying the DVD since it contains the Eric Serra soundtrack but I finally found the American version on VHS (out of print now).

Summary: Good movie but-
Review: I don't think I've ever come across the "American" version people are talking about. I too own this on VHS; however, it has the eric serra soundtrack (which I love.) I am disappointed by this version, mostly because the additional added minutes really do nothing for the movie. I can live with the additions, but also, while this has the same soundtrack, the songs seem to be in different places. I believe the VHS version better utilized the sound. . .As much as I love the movie, I'd have to agree, that if this is the director's cut, this is one of the few times I'd have to give kudos to the editors. >o'

Summary: sonically incorrect
Review: I am sorry to say that the Director's Cut of The Big Blue was very disappointing, sonically that is. I bought the movie on DVD to enjoy the marvelous Luc Besson masterpiece and later realized that all the music was changed. A different score was apparently written and used in this version. I loved the music from the original, which Eric Serra originally composed. I would like to know if you can buy the DVD with the original soundtrack, otherwise I am returning my DVD and finding an old VHS. I'd like to see the new DVD include the original score. Great movie, its too bad the musical score was changed.
