Summary: People who didnt like this film suffer from lack of lives.
Review: Im utterly aghast at the negative reviews this film got. Its a drama- not a documentary about rotting bodies or the medical effects of 3rd degree burns. Its one of the most fantasticaly beautiful movies I've ever, EVER seen, on par EASILY with Lawerance of Arabia or Dr.Zhavago (my other two favorit movies). Im a combat vet, I've seen death, I've seen life, and I've seen love and its devistating effects- I never cry and I cried my eyes out the first four times I saw this movie. Not only were the scenes of war realistic, as were their terriable effects, but the true beauty and fleeting essance of life was captured here. This move deals with all the tragedies and beauties of the human heart, and all I've got to say to those who would pan it for its story line is they have obviously never loved in vain or hurt so deeply that they understand the motivations of these characters. On the other hand Western Civilization's decline is vitaly based upon these people's ignorance and stupidity, far be it for me to interrupt the march of history.

Summary: hated it with a passion I have rarely felt before
Review: I'm trying to organize my thoughts so as to do my thoughts on this movie justice. That it didn't deserve any oscar, let alone 9 or whatever goes without saying. The buildup to some great romance was more than disappointing - just another adulterous affair - with of course, the obligatory female nudity - to show us poor saps of course, just How Passionate they are about each other. It certainly didn't show, beyond the groping of course. One reviewer had it right - why would anyone in his right mind have him piloting the plane!!! Of course, with the 90's morality of today, (where men and women have no idea whatsoever, what REAL LOVE is all about - only the most explicit idea of sexuality and instant gratification) our little heroine not only had an affair with someone she just met, she also manages to euthanize the so-called "hero". (I have another name for him, but I'm too polite) Thanks, but no thanks, I'd put this in the trash where it belongs

Summary: Boring for my wife, did not worth so many oscars for me.
Review: My wife hated it; I sort of enjoyed it. One thing I could not understand was the number of oscars the movie had accumulated. We usually buy movies affected by the number of osacrs it had fetched. As physicians, we did not quite realize that tastes could vary so much. This movie should not be rated so high.

Summary: I loved this movie
Review: I don't know if it deserved a bunch of accademy awards but I loved it. Cairo in the forties is a very compelling background for the story to unfold. The only two people I really cared about were Kip and Hana. The main characters were not very lovable but that they are real people with strengths and weakness just like everybody else is the point. It is not unimaginable for two people to be overwelmed with desire in the desert wilderness and to disregard the consequences. However I don't think anybody would have depended on a madman of a pilot who knows they're sleeping with his wife to pick them up in the middle of the desert. I've watched this movie 4 times now and I'll watch it again soon. I do hope that Kip and Hana lived happily ever after.

Summary: A cinematic classic, a staggering experience
Review: The English Patient is a classic movie. The relationship between Scott-Thomas and Fiennes was electrifying.

The cinematography was breathtaking.

Well worth seeing.

Summary: Boring...
Review: I thought this was a depressing, boring, and very slow film. The main character was not sympathetic, as he was self-centered, egotistical, and an adulterer. Save your money, and don't waste your time watching this tripe.

Summary: Visually Breathtaking, Emotionally Stunning; why 4 stars?
Review: I LOVE this film, but I can't give it 5 stars even though I consider it a masterpiece. Maybe I'm too critical, but I thought the acting fell short of the emotional potential of the story. My favorite actors in this movie were Binoche and Dafoe and Naveen Andrews (Andrews says more with his eyes than most actors can do with a thousand words!)

My complaint centers around the lack of intensity between the main lovers. In some respects, this makes a better movie in that the outward manifestations more closely parallel the tacit emotions we act out in real life. But it is this intensity that is central to the story. Maybe underplaying the emotional bonds was the director's way of not telegraphing the ending to the audience.

But, bottom line, I think EVERYONE should own this movie and watch it 100 times. The multiple story lines weave in and out of each other developing two gripping mysteries (Fiennes character and Dafoes' character) and, of course, the main love story. The final few minutes of the movie wrap around to the opening minutes with a perfect, heart rending, poetic symetry. One would have to less than a complete human to not be stirred deeply by this story of great love, betrayal, redemption, and loss.

Summary: Beautiful Yet Strangely Unaffecting
Review: Very loosely based on factual events in the life of a gay English Nazi sympathizer, THE ENGLISH PATIENT emerges as a beautifully filmed yet oddly unaffecting tale of an ill-starred heterosexual romance as recalled by a badly burned pilot in WWI-era Africa. I'm not entirely sure how the film makers got from one to the other, but the result is an extremely slow moving film that seems less a story of over-riding passions than an exercise in excessively stiff upper lips which strives to move viewers more through cinematography than through actual content. Apparently a great many people have found the film to their tastes, but I for one was not among them.

Summary: Powerful, but not to all tastes
Review: This is what I call a "wavelength movie." Like last year's "The Thin Red Line," either you are on its wavelength, or you are not. I happened to be--I was deeply affected by its story, which has themes that encompass madness, violent passion, loyalty and the meaning of ownership. The film is labrynthine, powerfully sexual, and sometimes startlingly violent. Those walking in for "Lawrence of Arabia Pt. II" will be disappointed. Those who thought "Fargo" was a better film may be right, but to be honest, the two are like apples and oranges--like comparing ancient Arabian chants with rock 'n' roll. I give this film five stars because few are bold enough to wear ambition on their sleves like this film ("Titanic" is the only film I can think of that compares in this way), and even fewer realize that ambition so fully (which "Titanic", sadly, did not).

Summary: FANTASTIC
Review: After seeing this fantastic movie I sat in total silence for about half an hour. I was just speechless at the power and effect it had on me. I think that Ralph Fiennes performance did deserve the oscar for best actor that he was nominated for and His portrail of an injured and dieing man was breath taking. Then there was the final scene between him and Binoche that brought a tear to my eye. A truely spectacular movie.
