Rating: Summary: Made a believer of an anime-hater Review: I'll admit it. I've never liked anime, even before it became the craze it is now. When I heard about Princess Mononoke, I just shrugged it off and rolled my eyes. Gradually, as I began to hear more about it, I developed a curiousity for it. When I heard it was playing on Starz, I decided it would be a good chance to try it; after all, it was free. -This movie blew me away.- The animation is superb (being an animation major in college, I'm picky about those things), the storyline interesting, and every shot was beautiful. My younger sister and I originally were watching it to make fun of it (as we do with many anime shows and movies) but we ended up loving the movie far more than we ever imagined. I loved the movie for the animation and the storyline (I am very into earth-based spirituality) and my sister loved the characters, especially the little Kodamas (tree-spirits) If you're looking for a serious, inspirational animated movie, then look no further. Princess Mononoke is all that and much much more. I'm glad I "forced" myself to watch it that one time, otherwise I would have missed out on one of the greatest movies I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
Rating: Summary: Miyazaki does it again Review: This is one of the best anime films I have ever seen. I went out and baught it the day after I first watched it. A wonderful story, great charactors and a truely beautiful message combined with marvelous animation and design make for a film not just for fans of the genre.
Rating: Summary: The worlds greatest movie Review: I thiught this was the best movie that i have ever wached. It have a good plot to it. One of the down falls of this movie was that it was realy blooded. But if you look past that it is a realy great movie. I say that anyone thats janpanese cartoons will like this.
Rating: Summary: Not the Miyazaki you've grown to love Review: Surely most people are fans of Miyazaki's works because of Nausicaa, Laputa, Kiki, Totoro. That's because even though those films appear "less ambitious" than Mononoke Hime they moved you emotionally, spiritually. Unfortunately that's missing from Mononoke. I can't buy into the argument that since there is no side you cheer for that this is more realistic=great. That doesn't make it great. And it's certainly not what made Miyazaki's previous works so enjoyable. Maybe I expected too much but even that put aside I didn't experience the same emotional charge and sense of wonder as I did when watching Laputa or Nausicaa. Even the ending was disappointing. There was no real resolution to the conflict. We didn't really learn much about anybody except how much Rage can cloud their judgements. The story line wasn't very memorable. I can't even remember the soundtrack. (astonishing considering Jo's past accomplishments in previous works). It's unfortunate since this was Miyazaki's first real big exposure to the US audience. The fact that it only grossed a bit over $2 Million in the US has endangered future realeases of his films by Disney. Write them and tell them that would be a very big mistake ...
Rating: Summary: i just dont get it.... Review: i've watched this more times than i think i should of, just because of the number of people who seem to love it, but i still hate this movie. maybe its because i've always hated anime. i honestly think there's no real message besides the whole environment thing (gee and we havnt heard that before huh). the rest of the "messages" just seem to be some sort of postmodernistic bs. i've had this theory about anime for a long time....they just whip up some confusing plot, and pretend it means something. the dialoge is what killed it for me mainly....you can tell it looses some effect in the translation. it'd be nice if they just rewrote the thing over in english. theres no real art in the words when they're spoke in english....it just sounds like...well japanese words translated into english. i'd would of liked to see this film free of some of the typical anime "fetishes", like that weird tentical thing they all seem to have. but its still my firm belief that anime is for simpletons who like to beleive that they can think. they just look at an asortment of weird images and pretend like they mean something. get yourself some kurasowa if you want a film that actually says something, and in an artfull way.
Rating: Summary: Mononoke a must for Fantasy Fans Review: This is an amazing anime feature reminding me a little of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Except that was Chinese Folklore). It has simplistic yet very professional and detailed animation by Hayao Miyazaki. Featuring a beautiful instrumental score rendered by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. This movie is set in isolationist Japan, and is filled with eastern/Japanese cultural elements for us westerners to attempt to understand. Along with a decent fantasy helping of personified animals and Gods. Be careful watching it if you can constitute a western audience member. This isn't a tree hugger movie like Fern Gully (me shudders). If you think this movie has contemporary western political motives then you are thinking too hard! I had to stop myself and just enjoy it. The story really has no antagonist because both sides in the story are equally guilty of one emotion (try and find the best line in the movie that sums up what I just said)...plus it smacks of Eastern values and mythology. And that's all I'm going to say about the story. If a devout conservative can love this movie...anyone can. Leave the soap box at home. Incidentally the english dub features the voices of American Hollywood stars such as Gillian Anderson (The X-Files)and Billy Bob Thorton (Armageddon, Pushing Tin, etc...)...But don't tell the real Anime buffs that I watched it dubbed...lol...I know only real anime fans watch subbed anime.
Rating: Summary: BEST ANIME EVER!! Review: This movie is about a young warrior prince who gets in a fight with a demon and gets a cursed wound on his arm. He sets out to find the forest spirit who is the only one who can heal his wounds. The animation in this movie is awesome. It's greatly drawn fast moveing and very realistic. The sound is unbalivable. The voice actors are great and sword clashing and so on is great too. The fight scenes are perfect. The only problem is that they are short. But theres lots of them. The only problem in the movie was the ending. The girl says "good bye im leaving i hate humans" (or something like that) and then it ends. But overall it is defenetly worth getting.buy this right now!
Rating: Summary: It was worth seeing. Watch the subtitles -- the dub stinks. Review: The story centers around an Inu villager (the Inu are an aboriginal caucasian minority following an animist religion living in Japan) who receives a corrupted/poison wound from a demon-infested wild boar (not exactrly, but this is a small review!). In this beautiful animation (Miyazaki does great work) the hero goes out into the feudal areas of Japan -- trying to heal the land (so the plot sounds a little bit "Captain Planet-esque" but hey). It's worth watching.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Excellence in anime genre Review: With an adaptation by Neil Gaimon how could this miss?..Well done dialogue with a minimum of that odd girl giggling usual to japanese anime. The artwork was also excellent with some refreshingly new ideas in the psychopomp themes. A moral theme but not amiss in this day of techno vs the ecologic.
Rating: Summary: A great movie Review: I really loved this movie, although once it ends it leaves you wondering what was that all about. But if you just stop and think about it for a few minuets it should come to you. Ive seen in some of the other reviews that some people didnt like the fact that there was no clear cut "bad guy" or "good guy" in the movie, but I think that is what makes the movie so great. I mean think about real life, most of us are neither bad nor good, just somewhere in that grey area of both. And thats how it is in the movie, yes some of the people do bad things, and you hate them for that, but then, they do somting good, and you forgive them, isnt that how it works in real life?? I really love anime, and after I saw this movie, I loved it even more. This movie is really worth it too see.
