Rating: Summary: Walk and live, talk and Bumba Clot dead Review: A story of poetic justice. I have seen this movie multiple times, but I had not watched it in four or five years. I kept reading reviews, and hearing people talk about Dancehall Queen and make the reference to Cinderella. I thought to myself, that is not how I remember it? So I sat down and watched it again.
I guess in terms of getting everything together for the big night, from the dress, shoes, dance routine, hair/wig, etc. etc. there is a feel of Cinderella to the story. The story of rags to riches is very similar to Cinderella. However, there is no prince at the end, no redemption so to speak. Also, in the end, she is still a street vendor. Marcia's life doesn't change so much she doesn't have to go back to her street life style, she just doesn't have to worry about men taking advantage of her family to pay the bills.
Dancehall queen is definitely a wonderful story, which I enjoyed very much. Though I was not a big fan of Larry's character. What a sick twisted old man?!?! I was dying at the dress maker store, when he used his come-on line "hey s_ xy b_tch." That was too funny. I don't think that would fly in our culture as a come on line.
Also, the hair styles (different wig every day by the hair dresser as an example), fashion, and cars from the club (well before pimp my ride) were also fun to see (a definite 80's feel to the style and fashion).
In conclusion, this is a very, very good movie. Dancehall Queen has great character development, great story, plot, story line, plus a strong cultural feel to it (that is a rare addition to a movie that makes it a true delight to watch). I would strongly recommend at least renting this movie once. This movie is a little too strong in terms of sexual content for children, however, appropriate for High school age kids and above.

Rating: Summary: Dancehall Queen Review: DanceHall queen is one of the best Jamaican movies I have ever seen. I laughed, I cried and I applauded. The rise of a struggling single jamaican mother with 2 girls. I am looking forward to more movies from this group. Paul Campbell deserves an oscar for his role as the cold hearted "Priest".
Rating: Summary: Marcia Triumphs Review: Even though this was a low bugdet movie..I think that it was really good. Marcia stepped up to the plate and handle her business the way only she could... in the dancehall. I didn't particulary like it when she allowed her "friend" Larry to get his grip on her daughter. I recommend this movie to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Good Movie Review: Good Movie but no real special features on the DVD. If you already have this on VHS dont bother getting the DVD version unless you want to acces screens. This DVD version offers nothing else other than trailers.
Rating: Summary: Nice story but not a musical Review: I bought the movie thinking it was a musical, because it is in the musical-dance section of Amazon.com. Unfortunately, it is not a musical at all. I expected much more dance scenes, so I was a bit disappoited ... The movie itself is fine though.
Rating: Summary: A Some What Classy Movie For A Rasta Fan. Review: I Have seen this movie on cable a few time then i had to buy it on DVD. This Movie to me was not some raunchy reggae movie. The dancers Danced with some class. They didn't remind me of strippers. I am not a Reggae fan but this movie got my attention. The story line was Interesting. It was kinda supensful to see the outcome. it was kinda hard to follow the dialect for someone who don't understand the rasta lauange. but after watching the movie a few time I was able to follow it. So my over all review is its a GOOD MOVIE :)
Rating: Summary: If you loved the movie, you will love this Review: I really enjoyed most of the cd. I would have liked some other songs to replace 2 of the remixes of the "Dancehall Queen" track. I jammed to "Little and Cute", "Joy Ride", and "My Jamaican Guy". And the track "Unbelievable" reminded me of my husband! All in all, this was a great cd and I would buy it for a friend.
Rating: Summary: As a Jamaican this a great family and cultural movie Review: I really enjoyed the movie. I would love to see beenie man in more Jamaican movies. I would also like to see him play a bigger role, maybe one with buju and the shocking vibes crew.
Rating: Summary: solid movie Review: I really enjoyed this movie. The characters were believable and most of the actors did an excellent job. If you're looking for something heavy this is not for you. This is a lighthearted movie that west-indian people can relate to on many levels. It is true that young island women often find themselves with much older men that can offer them financial security in these hard times and it shows how mothers are sometimes willing to turn a blind eye to the situation around them. I have seen this alot. All in all this movie serves its purpose to entertain. There is good music, dance and jokes cant done. Latah.
