Rating: Summary: Haunting and disturbing Review: "Sister, My Sister" left me speechless and haunted. This film seethes with a quiet intensity that threatens to overwhelm, at times. As it reached it's climax, I was literally trembling. It, obviously, struck a nerve. The entire premise of the film is disturbing: The abusive lady of the house and her equally hateful daughter degrading and oppressing their two maids to the point that they turn to one another for solace and love in the form of an incestuous affair, seemingly having nothing or no one else left in this world. The sisters, Christine and Lea are complex yet not unlikeable persons. It is more than obvious from their behavior and explosive tendencies that their childhood was abusive and bleak. This fact is alluded to occasionally. You'll find yourself asking what could possibly have snapped in the mind of those two girls to propel them to such violence. Nonetheless, in the end pity triumphs over loathing in reference to the sisters and vice-versa regarding the other two women. The fact that it's based on a true story makes this an even more chilling experience. As I previously stated, it's a quiet film, yet somehow it manages, simultaneously, to scream within you. The performances are first-rate, as is every other respect. Unforgettable!

Rating: Summary: One of the forgotten films Review: A film of amazing patience, and timing. All the performances are first rate. The story (a true one nonetheless) is compelling. It's a passionate, heart breaking and horrifying experience ! This film is one of the forgotten gems of the 90's. Have you heard of it before ? I didn't think so. But make sure you see it or get this DVD. The films finale and final sound (the elder sister screaming her younger sister's name) is harrowing, and unforgettable. Pretty good for a film that was forgotten by everyone else.
Rating: Summary: Joely Richardson is simply astonishing in this movie! Review: Based on the real life case of the Papin sisters, this film is fairly well made (by a woman director, Nancy Meckler)--like a literate BBC production. However, with her performance as the older sister Christine, Ms. Richardson rises above all of its faults. It's her best work: terrifying, lyrical, unforgettable. She takes her place with her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, and the few other greatest living actresses. You must buy this video, and watch her!
Rating: Summary: Not sure Review: Hey guys, please tell me - do I have to buy this one or not? I like the title and the two girls in it and I wonder if there is a bit nudity in this one -- is so please tell me so i can buy it I want to see them in action....~_~...
Rating: Summary: Highly erotic, but also pretty depressing! Review: I felt really sorry for practically EVERYBODY in this film! The two girls were lovely, but their lives were so wretched --- all they had was eachother. And while I enjoyed the eroticism of their lovemaking, I felt terribly sad at the same time. As for the bitchy woman they worked for, I even felt bad for her and her daughter, although she brought some of it on herself. A difficult movie to sum up.
Rating: Summary: you will be taken right down with them Review: i have to admit that going into this film i was hoping for the previously mentioned "playboy meets merchant ivory romp" but was surprised in a way i never would have expected. first of all this movie is not a sex romp in any sense of the word the sex scenes here come late in the film and have almost a repulsive desperation that communicates eloquently the secluded quietly put upon lives these women are leading. as it begins the younger of the two sisters is coming into one of the most dishearteningly lonely houses i have yet encountered on film to work with her long estranged sister as a maid to an uptight woman and her restless daughter, who can ovbiously sense the smell of death in the house and on her mother and as the audience we catch that same smell on her. at first viewing the first half of the film appears to move very slowly but what you dont realize is that its sucking you into the pace of the characters lives so subtely that when the first hints of sexual tensions crop up around the sisters the audience is left gasping at the prospect of a deviation in the drudgery. i should note that by drudgery i do not mean a sense of boredom beacuse by this time you are fully invested in the characters and are pulling for them to find a way out. the sisters do finally give in to thier desires, in a scene cut betwen thier love making and the mother and daughter playing cards that builds wonderfuly until a climax is reached and the emptyness for all four parties returns. to tell you any more would be to reveal to much of one of the most affecting third acts i have ever seen. so i will leave it to you to see it. be warned though this movie presents no happy axiam for either human nature or the nature of existance it is merely a chronicle of the fall of utterly insignifigant people. that in the end is why i gave it 4 stars instead of five. beacuse while it does tell its story skillfuly and evoke emotions completely i wouldnt mind if i never felt them again.
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Sexy Drama! Review: I have to say that "Sister My Sister" is one of my favorite films... and not just because it is a lesbian film! Sexy, dark and provocative subject, great acting, buildup etc. What more can you ask for in a flick? Great drama which ranks up there with films such as "Bound" and "Lost and Delirious".
Rating: Summary: A Dark and Sexy Drama Review: I have to say that "Sister My Sister" is one of my favorite films... and not just because it is a lesbian film. Sexy, dark and provocative subject, great acting, buildup etc. What more can you ask for in a film? Excellent drama which ranks up there with films such as "Bound" and "Lost and Delirious".
The DVD does come with a generic DVD case, so if you're into collecting... the VHS version might be better for you.
Rating: Summary: More than a little CREEPY! Review: I viewed this one knowing nothing about the story. It plods a bit at the beginning, but it picks up in pace and I was a little more than stunned. There is a good sense of foreboding right from the start, but it doesn't give the story of these two sisters away too early. There is something sinister in the air, and the events are quite shocking. Well acted, directed and filmed! There are moments of extreme tension, eroticism, and then and ending I didn't see coming. In the end, it's more than just a little creepy! Sometimes a family can be a little too close!
