Review: this is one of the best war movies ever made. based on a true story about Omar Al-Mukhtar the Lybian leader who fought against the Italins who invaided Libya between(1911-1931). But he was excuted by being thrown from a plane and not by hanging. The prince of the Arab poets, Ahmed "bey" Shwaki wrote a poem about him.

Summary: Good objective look at one's aggression at another's land
Review: This is the story of the Italian occupation of Libya from 1911 to 1945. Lion of the Desert has been made a movie where the lion is Omar El-Mukhtar and the desert is the Libyan Desert.Quinn played the character of Omar El-Mukhtar and the movie was directed by Mustafa El-Aqad, an American-Syrian some neraly 20 years ago. In it the story of the agrresion and the heroic leadership of Al-Mukhtar is shown in detail. Omar El-Mukhtar who had to fight for his country at the age of 70 + years was eventually hanged by the Fascistes of Italy in a small village near Beghazi called Saluq. The sotry goes step by step from the time Mussolini gained power in Italy to the invasion of Libya, and then the involvement of El-Mukhtar.. who was a religious teacher in South East Libya teaching Quran to young puplis. An Attck on his people in Northern Libya made him decide to fight against the Italians. He immediately became known and the libyan people followed him. For more than 10 years (from 1923 to 1933) he became the symbole of resistance to the Italians. It's worth reading book especially by those who are young and wish to know about that period of crazyness of the world. Lion of the Deser is also a graphic display of the power of machines (warplanes in particular)against the unarmed civilians in their homes and villages. In the end it also shows how the strong well is more capable than the strong machine.. It's the real story of a Libyan historical chapter. END

Summary: Most realistic for its battle scenes
Review: This is well-acted film with a fine cast. The most striking feature of the film is the battle scenes which are excellent because of the military weapons, armoured vehicles, uniforms, equipment etc that have been recreated. This makes the action first class. The film is also notable for the inspirational wisdom of Omar Mukhtar who is truly a leader to die for. It is a pity other producers have not picked up from here other than "A Bridge Too Far" and "Saving Private Ryan".

Summary: Beautiful movie
Review: This movie depicts the struggle for independence of Lybia during its Italian colonisation. The story is interesting and true, the movie is fantastic, the sceneries are marvellous and the hero very fascinating. I frankly cannot understand the negative feelings toward this movie. Is it because the hero is an Arab, or that the story depicts the Lybian liberation? Well whatever the reason for the negativity, I feel it is displaced. As for the Italians resentments towards that movie, it has nothing to do with history since undeniably, Lybia suffered a great deal under the Italian hands, and should not influence the review regarding the quality of the story, acting or everything else. This movie should belong to the classical historical "Chef d'oeuvres".

Summary: Excellent picturization
Review: This movie is about a cleric who fights Libya's liberation from the italians. Mustaffa Akkad created a ompletely new city for this movie. Anthony Quinn has been at his best. Oliver Reed has done a great job too. This is a must see movie.

Summary: minimum ammunition, maximum will against the colonials
Review: This Movie shows the struggle of a nation for its feedom. It shows how the will can fight a war against modern trained army. Regardless to whom had produced the movie (because of lack of Funds) this movie had a message to pass and I think it did. You'll have to watch the full version for the true effect.

Summary: This Movie is good. 4.5/5
Review: This movie though not popular is one of the good movie I've seen. It's all about a man (Mukhtar). who tries to save his homeland from colonization for twenty years.

Anthony Quinn is incredible as Mukhtar. but I also praise Oliver Reed for potraying as Graziani the "Governer of Libya" sent by Mussolini to quell this rebellion. But there was a draw back of the film. It was a bit one sided, showing the Arabs as hero (righttfully so) while the Italians (as in soldiers etc) as ruthless and barbaric. While colonialization of other lands is wrong. I feel this film was a bit too slandorous against the Italians. But remember Mussolinni was the founder of the oppressive system of Facism.

Pros: Exellent History of Libya Between the 2 World Wars

Battle scenes are awesome Amazing actors (Oliver Reed, Anthony Quinn, Rod Steiger etc)

Cons: One Sided, too biased against the Italians

Poor sound Quality, music audio tracks takes over the action (I have a surround systems)

But the movie was good
