Review: This is the worst quality DVD I have ever seen, let alone purchased. It does not even hold up to pre-recorded video standards, let alone DVD. Avoid this version of a great film and if this is the standard for Gemstone entertainment, avoid their products. The 1 star is only because I can't give it less.

Summary: Brother Has It All!
Review: This movie has more going for it than you can imagine. There's, of course, the message about slavery - its ubiquitous practice even beyond earth - and the underlying passion of people to be free. Then there are the messages about drugs, about inter-racial marriage and relationships, about love with the proper stranger, about life as a 'has been' singing star, and on and on. You'll also love the music, the acting, and, of course, Little Earl! In my list of top ten of all time! Thanks John, Joe and everyone else involved in this movie.

Review: this one is so called "widescreen." There is another DVD which has the number B000055XLV also available here on Amazon, which is fullscreen so you can really watch and enjoy this wonderful movie. Buy that version instead, and the price is much cheaper to boot!

Review: This version, the Gemstone DVD--not the more recent MGM one--is fullscreen so you can really see and enjoy the movie. Contrary to the reviews below, it is truly great, and at a much better price. It is too bad that the director's interview, etc. are on the MGM DVD, but that one is so called "widescreen" only, and therefore should not be bought or supported. Buy and watch this excellent fullscreen version of a truly wonderful film.

Review: This was the first John Sayles movie that I experienced, I am now a rock hard fan of his. This story was delivered in such a compelling manner, such that "No special effects" were required.

Summary: A Look Through Different Eyes
Review: Where most reviews of this flick fail, IMO, is by omitting its strongest quality--it brings a vision of humanity from another, saner viewpoint. The Brother, stranded in a completely foreign society, manages without words to communicate to us (the audience) just how peculiar we human beings are, seen through eyes unpolluted by our society's normal filters--all handled with compassion and tenderness. Magnificent! We have an opportunity to comprehend the insanities that we have created in our society. The drug sub-plot at the end is a bit weak. If you like this, also see Being There, Edward Scissorhands, and Slaughterhouse Five.
