Summary: An intricate look at the mind of a killer
Review: "The Ugly" is a brilliant film that explores the psyche of a serial killer. The movie is a labyrinth of accelerated images, with an absolutely tremendous performance from Paolo Rotondo as the killer, Simon, a character who manages to exude both pity and power through the manipulation and deception of a naive and brassy psychiatrist. An interesting and determined essay on the psychological implications of murder, and quite a good movie, too.

Summary: 'Ugly' it is not...
Review: 'The Ugly' is a cracking little film with excellent use of imagery and colour (look out for red and blue particularly).It's also one of the first films in a long time that contains actually scary moments, noteably the flashes of the 'visitors'. As far as the DVD goes, the picture's great but the sound is only stereo with a loss of sound-sync half-way through the film but don't let this put you off.

Summary: They don't make 'em like this anymore...
Review: ...well, they do, but not very often. The Ugly is an exceptional little horror movie that mixes great visual's with an intriguing storyline and quite good acting. There is not much I can say about this that hasn't already been said, but I felt like trying to up the average. :)

Summary: Interesting, and a little too close to home...
Review: A different serial killer film, about one who does it because he 'likes it' (his statement at one point) but also has other reasons...maybe... Our killer (hero?) provides us with several opposing explanations of why he does it, and finally one is left with the realization that the only way to understand serial murder is to be one of its practitioners...we do not really know, in the end, which explanation is true, or if any are... Too close to home because his mother is remarkably like mine was (I guess I should be glad I also had a father who stayed, and siblings!) See it.

Summary: Manipulating and Thoroughly Engrossing
Review: A very frightening movie about a serial killer (Simon) and a female psychiatrist (Dr. Karen Shoemaker). The screen is filled with murderous flashbacks saturated with blood and gore, but these scenes are not what's scary. Not only is Simon manipulating the naive Dr. Shoemaker, but the director is also manipulating the viewer - you. At first we're led to believe that Simon is lying about his motives for the murders: that he's being instructed to kill by "visitors." Then, not only do we "see" the visitors, but Simon is also able to "project" these images on Dr. Shoemaker. Now Dr. Shoemaker "sees" the visitors who are guiding Simon. If Simon is able to project these powerful images on Dr. Shoemaker, is the director capable of doing the same with the viewer? In other words, is the fatal ending of The Ugly real or unreal? From my perspective, the director simply provides the circumstances for the film's ambiguous ending, and I made the dream sequence come true. The Ugly is one of a handful of movies where the viewer plays an active role in the final outcome. Thoroughly engrossing.

Summary: The thinking man's horror movie.
Review: A very underrated little nasty. The Ugly's title says it all. But instead of going the all out gore route in plot. the ugly concentrates more on the cause of a serial killer than the effects. However, this low budget New Zeland shot little film has it all, great acting(Hobbs and Ward are very good, but Rotondo steals the show), stylish lighting, brutal murders(the black blood provided by the same make up man who did Dead-Alive), and a very engrossing story with love, hate, anger, sorrow, beauty(even the murders have a slight beauty about them, I know I'm a sick puppy), and even a little bit of romance and humor. The killer in the movie is frightened, fragle, emotional, sympathetic, and in the space of a minute cold, calculating, evil, and sinister. The ending is the only drawback....END

Review: Although this film is quite watchable, there are many better films of this type you should own first. For this much money, you should rent it, mail me a check for $10, and pocket the rest. You'll be glad you did.

Review: Dumb and stupid. Not the least bit scary. And what's up with the black blood???? Don't waste your time or money on this piece of crap.

Summary: Well, almost but not quiet!
Review: First what was good was it had a good script, and was well directed. But maybe it was just the version I saw, but all the blood except the final scene was black. Maybe it was symbolic or maybe it was for the rating, or maybe it was just easier to make black blood instead of red. However I was happy not to see computer FX!

Review: full of images and gore that can be over the top especially with all that blood but The Ugly is like a treat..all those sucky horror films like fear.com, House On Hanted Hill, 13 Ghosts2001 and House OF 1000 Corpses, with gore but no brains behind them..this one has fresh writing and some surprisingly good acting. a nice little tightly wrapped gift
