Review: Boring and stupid. Certainly there were shocking and disgusting, disturbing moments, but come on. I can't believe I was able to sit through the whole movie.

Review: This isn't an amazing or deep film that must be seen. Its a discontinued, rare, High E-Bay bidding, attention capturing, hyped up cinematic trash that people ONNNNNLLLY WATTCCCH because its hard to obtain a copy, rent it. Im not disgusted easily but those who are will find this repulsive. This may be based on 120 Days of Sodomy but its retarded. NOTHING HAPPENS.

Its graphic, violent, disgusting---> kids being tortured and raped. Again theres nothing wrong with curiousity but please dont be dumb. Dont tell me this film is ANY deeper than what you see. Kids being tortured and then more kids being tortured.

1. Boring
2. Funny (No intentionally though)
3. Disgusting but not half as digusting as some make it out to be

Summary: The madness that lurks in great art
Review: I must admit that I approached this movie with trepidation, having heard and read so much about it. After having watched it, I must tip my hat to the late Pasolini, for I think it takes great talent to make a movie about human perversions without resorting to cheap shock. The cinematography is mesmerising. The sets are minimal. The dialogue is charmingly warped. The acting is superb. Compare Salo with Tinto Brass' Caligula. Both movies were about mankind's dark side, but I felt dirty and debased after watching the latter. Tinto, who is definitely not in the same league as other Italian filmakers like Pasolini, Fellini or Antonioni (and never will be I assure you) first left nothing to the imagination, and then gave the audience some more. On the other hand, Pasolini's Salo is like a lotus - a flower that dares to be beautiful in the face of adversity. This review is based on the Criterion Laserdisc.

Summary: An Unsettling Film.....
Review: I was initially scared of viewing this film due to the dark cloud of controversy enveloping it. Finally, I paid $70+ for a copy of the Criterion Collection DVD; once it arrived, I prepared myself psychologically to view "Salo". Surprisingly, I was pleased with the viewing experience. The film is certainly unsettling. It explores the twisted extremes of human nature. However, Pasolini seems to treat this unsavory subject matter in an artistic manner. The dialogue is well-constructed; the cinematography is good; the use of light and shadow enhances the unsettling atmosphere of the film. If one really listens to the dialogue, one becomes aware of multiple levels of meaning which seem to be embedded within the film. Pasolini seems to be satirizing the totalitarianism of the Fascist regime; he also seems to be commenting on Man's appalling capacity to dehumanize and degrade his fellow man; towards the end of the film, he also seems to be implicating the viewer as a voyeur to the horrid tortures which are portrayed on the screen...he almost seems to be intimating that the viewer - by passively observing from a secure distance - is implicity condoning the depravity of the Fascist protagonists. Moreover, this film is rife with elements which would lend themselves to examination from the classical Freudian psychoanalytic perspective. I would only recommend this film to the viewer who is mature of age as well as intellect. "Salo" seems richly imbued with symbolism; however, the visceral responses it has the tendency of generating upon the first viewing can be unpleasant. I would proceed with caution. Analysis of the film is worthwhile and rewarding...as well as strangely revealing about the dark complexities submerged within the human psyche. [Nicholas Lianna is the pen-name of Nehal D. Patel.]

Review: There will never be another film like Salo - the very fact that it was produced is a miracle and one we should be very greatful for.
Pasolini, I believe, has here one of the best visions of the possibilities of the cinema. He is not, as Leonard Maltin says, out for pure sensationalism and contreversy. No, there is something more calculated about this film.
What this movie made clear to me - is that in this world we are all responsible. In the final scenes of the movie - Pasolini's hints at voyeurism suggest something parallel to you the viewer of the film. Yes, you are watching.. You are seeing the atrocities of the world - and you are no better than anyone else.
As images from Iraq emerge - like mistreatment of iraqui prisoners, beheading of American soldiers, greed over oil - we should reflect on 'Salo' - yes we are responsible - lets do something about it.

Summary: Trash rubbish
Review: total trash rubbish...if you fancy eating human feces this is the movie for you. im sorry but im a music and film collector with the most sophisticated taste and I do appreciate or "dig" even the most incomprehensible stuff but this was just awful. I tried hunting down this movie after hearing all the controversy and finally i got one but to my surprise it was all junk. i suggest for all those who are spending so much money to watch the movie, save your energy and money get Caligula instead. This movie is just TERRIBLE!!!
