Summary: Wonderful movie!
Review: When I saw this movie, I was speechless. Irregardless of the fact that the entire movie is in French, and irregardless of the fact that the plot is occasionally hard to follow, this movie ranks among my all time favorites! It may be confusing at first, but eventually this movie will drag you in and make your heart pound with fear and exhilaration as the hero of the piece fights to save himself and the woman he loves from a hideous beast that may or may not have a more deadly and sinister purpose. If you like fantasy and action sprinkled with intrigue, this movie is for you. I know it's definitely the movie for me.

Summary: Wild! A real surprise of a film.
Review: I actually enjoyed this film! Didn't think I would like it much, but it combined period piece, action, horror, kung fu, romance, etc. in such a fresh and unique way, I was taken by surprise.

The film was quite dense visually, and with the many Matrix-like fast cuts, I look forward to a second veiwing on DVD. Maybe it won't hold me as much the second time, but we'll see...

Summary: Best of Brotherhood
Review: Brotherhood of the wolf was an action-packed, outrageously exciting and entertaining movie with quite the intricate and unexpected plot! If you like a truely good movie, I would suggest this awesome one. It was the best movie that I have seen in the past few YEARS, far surpassing those more recent ones. However, if you don't like reading subtitles, you might want to steer clear of this one. Oh yeah, and DEFFINITLY leave the kids at home!

Summary: The Brotherhood of the Wolf
Review: Movie Review:
The Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups)

When a seventeenth century beast unleashed chaos on a French village, two men are determined to destroy this evil creature. The King of France sends Gregoire de Fronsac (A renown scientist and detective), and Mani (Iroquois Indian, and blood brother to Gregoire) to put an end to this beast. These two blood bothers are greatly unaware of the dangerous truth they are about to uncover. This French film has many unique characteristics and cinematography. Within the main plot of trying to find and kill the beast, there are many subplots 'including love politics, deception, trust and determination. These elements play a vital role in this film. The variety in the settings and wardrobe in this film bring to life the plot and the myth of the Beast of Gevaundan. The actors in this film are well scripted, and each brings their character to life in a unique way.
The Brotherhood of the Wolf has many settings and costumes that bring to life the essence of Gevaundan, a French village in 1764. The settings range from an elegant palace, in which King Louis resides, to a filthy seventeenth century jail cell, to even a brothel. The scientist wears clothing that gives him a rustic look, when compared to the elaborate clothing warn by elite of this time. The women of this movie wear dresses that range from simple peasant attire to upper society frocks and bustles. Even the Beast in this movie had a rather unique costume that is made of sharp iron, and other pieces of metals. The wardrobe fits different events and situations from those outfits worn for hunting to those of a whorehouse. This movie gives a good depiction of European dress during this era
The Cinematography in this film is unlike that of contemporary American films. This European film focuses on a lot of slow motion sequences. Most of these slow motions shots take place while a person is running through the woods or being devoured by the beast. Usually in many American films there is a tendency to focus a slow motion sequence during a huge explosion or an elaborate fight scene, which this film ignores. Also when a victim is fleeing for their life, the camera begins to get really jumpy. An example of this is in the opening scene when a peasant girl runs for her life, you are left wondering what is she actually doing. This is also true for the fight scenes, once again the camera becomes very jumpy. Another aspect that the French Cinematographer uses is when he pans to another character in the room. In most American films the camera will just cut to another character, or the panning will be very steady, and once again not choppy as in this film.
This film contains a variety of characters each with their own uniqueness. The fact that you are unaware of who these actors are in this film adds to the plot. The reason why is because these actors are all French, so their fresh new faces pull you into the plot. Usually when you are familiar with an actor you have an idea what kind of film you are about to watch. Even though you are watching sub-titles, the acting is so good that you forget you are even reading the sub-titles, and get caught up in the story. The main character played by Samuel Le Bilhan gives an excellent performance through out the film. He greatly captures determination, when his blood brother Mani dies.
I would encourage people to see this film not only for the story, but also so they are able to see the difference between an American and French film. Due to the plot of this story, people who enjoy mystery, horror, science fiction, love, drama, history, adventure and foreign will like this movie. This film brings all these elements and some action scenes to the big screen. This film is not like the typical films in theaters now, and it has an ending that will shock and surprise you. The only part of this film that is unappealing is the cinematography, but that is easily overridden by the story line and acting that pulls you in until the end.

Summary: What a feast for the mind and eyes!
Review: This film is a masterpiece, taking what fairy tales were long before the Brothers Grim, Disney and other sanitizers changed them for children and bringing it to us in beautiful detail.
Nothing is more horrfying than the unknown and one of the best things about this film is that they keep you guessing through most of the picture and they do not dumb it down. (Unlike Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow which took out 90% of the suspense and made the film almost boring while we waited for Ichobod Crane to catch up with us in the audience.)
It is witty, intelligent and so much better than most American films being produced today.
Many of my friends found this film to bloody, as someone who HATES bloody films I did NOT find this too bloody. There was one objectional scene for me and that was brief. This was no means a blood bath film but it is VERY dark and is not some clean hollywood film where the good guys don't sweat or bleed.
I had two problems with the film and they are personal issues:

1. The dead shepardess scene was too much for me.
2. The wolf hunt was horrible to watch if you are at all fond of animals, however as it was not a REAL wolf hunt and was what people would have done back then I found it less objectionable than the dead shepardess scene which was just a little too gross for me.
Also the soundtrack is superb and fits the movie to a T.
Go see this film or buy the DVD-Video when it comes out and you will be amazed!
