Summary: It could have been worse. Not sure how.
Review: This is a very bad movie. From the stereotypical Indian Companion with kung fu moves and miracle powder to the evil priests in league with evil Gypsies to the "Romeo and Juliet" potion and the sword ripped directly from a video game (Soul Caliber), this film hits on every cliche the genre allows and makes room for a few more, while avoiding any redeeming plot features.

The sound effects are very poor, and would have worked much better if they had simply been cranked down by about 10 decibels. The editor surely ought to be in rehab for crystal meth addiction. The pace of the film is uncontrolled, with cuts so fast in the fight scenes it was usually impossible to tell which character was winning.

All of this would be acceptible in an action flick that is otherwise entertaining. Unfortunately this film does not have that quality. It has enough going on to make me sit through it once, at a free showing, and it did not have any obnoxious children or gratuitous CG, so I give it two stars, but I can not recommend paying money to see this movie. Hollywood makes enough films that are like this but better. We should not have to import this stuff from France.

Summary: Brotherhood of the Wolf
Review: ...This is one of the most incredible movies I've ever seen! It gives a believable theory to one of history's unsolved mysteries: The Beast of Gevaudan, who reportedly killed over 100 people in France prior to the Revolution. No one ever solved those murders, it was thought to be the work of a werewolf.

This movie is based on fact, actual historical accounts. And given the political climate of the time, a believable and "mundane" (meaning non-supernatural) solution to these heinous crimes.

This is to the legend of the Beast of Gevaudan what "From Hell" was to the Jack the Ripper legend.

Summary: GOOD MOVIE
Review: I thought this movie was one of the better movies of this year.
It is one of those cool/fun movies that I don't mind watching over again.
Some movies are good, but I just don't feel like watching again after seeing it the first time. Not with Brotherhood of the Wolf.
I call this the "Fun Factor", and BOTW definitely has the fun factor.
The other movie that has the fun factor for this year is Spider-Man.
I saw "Minority Report" and "Sum of All Fears" yesterday, and although they were good movies (Minority Report better than SOAF), they do not have the fun factor.

Summary: Brotherhood of the Wolf Rules
Review: There's violence, sex, nudity, horror, and more! What more could someone want? Based [lightly] on a true story of a terrible beast in France during the 1700s or something, this movie provides the most chances to say "wow" during a film. I tell you, this movie is colonial JAWS on speed...totally.
And the DVD is great, too. Now I know it isn't out in America, but I got one from France and I can now watch it over and over (and in slow-mo when necessary). The picture is so clean, and - come on people...buy this movie! Buy it becauseit rules! The DVD rules! Brotherhood of the Wolf RULES!!!!

Summary: French Kung Fu movie?
Review: At first, I didn't know what to make of this movie. Trepidation upon entering the theater however melted into pure unadultareted joy as I watched my first French martial arts flick. While not setting any records in special fx realism or fine drama, this was one of the more entertaining two hours of my life. I wholeheartedly recommend this for anyone who wants to have a good time, as the acting is good for the material given and the fights are on par with most of the things we see here from Asia.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: Having seen the movie during a private screening, I can state that (despite a bit of out-and-out gory-ness), this film is extremely well done. The cinematography is beautiful beyond description (especially the extraordinary TIMING), the sound is SO REAL, and the period costumes are authentic and luscious. I was totally knocked out by virtually unknown (at least here in the States) actor MARK DACASCOS, who exhibits -- as the character Mani -- some of the most incredible martial arts moves I have ever seen. He is sheer poetry with his perfect body. The story is based on true facts, and there is a tension that draws you into the movie so entirely. Even though this is not the sort of movie I would normally view, I am immensely glad I saw this one, if only because of the talented Mark Dacascos.

Summary: One of the best movies i've seen, foreign or not.
Review: I was a little skeptical once I realized that I would have to be reading most of the movie. But I have to admit, the cinematography was incredible and so was the story. Shortly into the film, I didn't even notice I was reading anything, and the story line grabs you so tightly, you feel like your in a French man living in time period yourself. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good action movie, with a little romance and suspense mixed in.
