Summary: Great movie, but..
Review: (...will I get the 1997 "Italian vourse" or the 2001 version if I order the movie on DVD?)
What I like about this movie is the typical Italian atmosphere. I had seen "The Bicycle Thief" only a couple of weeks before, and didn't know anything about this film. So my favourtite scene is maybe the one where the communist watch "The Bicycle Thief".
This is one of my all-time favourite movies.

Summary: Grande!

Summary: A Life-Changing Work of Art, A Profound Experience
Review: I did not know what to expect when I brought an old VHS copy of this film home about 12 years ago - I was 16 at the time, and a lover of Italian culture. Director Ettore Scola demonstrates with clarity, elegance and most of all - true beauty - what IS important in life, in this exceptional film whose obscurity is a adequate statement of our cultural value deprivation.

Where else can one see a critique of Marxism, narcissism & power-lusting, while still demonstrating all the opportunity for goal-achievement in one's own life?

Summary: Fellini, De Sica, ... who cares.
Review: I opened this DVD with some trepidation, because of all the controversy surrounding its original release. To my relief, the full theatrical version was there, uninterrupted and without cuts. The print quality is good enough, better than the one I saw recently at Vittorio Gassman retrospect. The controls are not particularly versatile, for example, I couldn't change the choice of subtitles during the play, but regardless of the flaws, we should be grateful to those, who made this wonderful film available to us. There is nothing like it!

Summary: GREAT, JUST GREAT
Review: ONE OF THE BEST PICTURES I HAVE EVER SEEN. THIS IS A MOST FOR THOSE WHO LOVE EUROPEAN MOVIES.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS DVD. It is not a movie!!!!
Review: Or but it only if you think you want to try to learn Italian seeing dismembered motion pictures. The great Ettore Scola movie was butchered in "the culmaitation of effort made by many people over many years" by the obtuse people of the Brigham Young University. I think ... must warn[people] more and advice them when the product is not a movie but a cheap Berlitz-like foreign language course.

Summary: Clarification !
Review: The Second edition of this DVD has been available since 2001. The first edition, which went to the menu after every scene, is no longer available. Neither version cut any scenes. The DVD now being sold at this site and others is the complete, uncut movie and can be viewed without interruption. I apologize for the confusion caused by my earlier explanation.

Summary: Italian lesson, and good movie !
Review: This DVD is produced not as a movie but as an Italian lesson (using the movie)by a well-known Utah University . In this respect, it is a great lesson of Italian, but it is not the greatest visual quality. This did not bother me because I happen to seek the Italian lesson. However, I usually like my movies crisp and clean, and this DVD version does not qualify for such specialty. I though the potential buyer should be told! Otherwise, I love the movie...!
