Summary: Best ever
Review: This really is the best film I have ever watched. It was surprising for me to see that I am the first to comment on it.

Summary: Amazing but true tale of strength and the will to live
Review: This story is made even more amazing since it is based on fact. The real Solomon Perel has quite a story to tell. I have also read the book, and the movie is a bit factually inaccurate, but it is still tremendously well-made.

Young Solly is played by a beautiful young actor named Marco Hoffschneider. His good looks and charm are part of what get him to convince the Gestapo that he is not a Jew, but an ethnic German. But Solly has much more getting him through this ordeal. His determination and strength of spirit, plus blinding will to live, and perhaps the youthful exuberance of being able to accomplish it, help him to pull off the charade. The young boy speaks several languages, and is able to use this skill to convince Nazi soldiers that he is not Jewish. The soldiers adopt him as a sort of "mascot." Fate is also on his side, since several times when it seemed he might be found out, the hand of a higher power intervenes.

This is an engrossing film, sad and funny. Perhaps Solomon Perel is ashamed that he lived with the enemy to save his life, but, he is alive today to tell his story. The real Solomon Perel makes a brief appearance at the end.

Summary: The worst event in history
Review: When I saw this movie for the first time ever I was in my German History class in college. We only saw a short section of the movie but, being from Germany, I had to borrow this movie from my professor. It was amazing to see this story of survival. What makes it more imprssive is that it is based on a true story of a jewish boy serving in the German Wehrmacht and is porttrayed as the picture perfect Aryan soldier due to his heroics. It was kind of ironic how no one found out that he was jewish except for his gay friend who served at the front with him. The main point of that relationship was that German's come in different shapes and forms. The type of German's they concentrated on were gay's and jew's, two of the most hated lifestyles in Germany at the time. The movie shows you the horrors of war with an artistic twist to it. EX: Hitler dancing with Stalin and Hitler hidding in the closet saying he is a jew, too. I could go on and on but this is a must see if you are into foreign movies. Although I am a native German, I had to put on the subtitels because when everyone started speaking Russion I couldn't understand a word. ENJOY and take the good message from this movie.

Summary: Yes, it's a terrific movie ... But it's a horrible DVD
Review: When will the studios get a clue??? This NONanamorphic DVD looks terrible on my widescreen television. I was hoping that the wait would have been worth it. It was not. When I zoom the image to fill my screen the subtitles drop off the bottom (out of view), and I can't read a thing! My German is good enough to follow most of the movie, but my Russian is still spotty, and my Polish is absolutely nonexistent. How are you supposed to watch a tri-lingual movie if you can't read the subtitles????

I have loved this movie since its original release, and was eagerly anticipating its arrival on DVD. But this kind of half-hearted effort should not have been issued. DO NOT BUY THE CURRENT DVD. (Rent it? Absolutely! The story is a rare example of truth being stranger than fiction, and the movie is beautifully executed.)
