Rating: Summary: This movie is superior! Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life! It carries a strong message, superb acting, and a totally breathtaking plot. Stephen Dorff is a great and totally diverse actor, and I can't praise his performance in this film enough. If you are a movie buff or Dorff fan, you MUST see this film. I think this is a great movie for anybody.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite movies of all time Review: This movie is so so spectacular. It has been a long time since I saw it, but I am still getting teary-eyed and happy just thinking about it. It is a movie that touches your heart and stays with you forever.
Rating: Summary: This was the catalyst for a journey to Africa - Review: I was first subjected to this movie through my brother, who had the soundtrack. i was so drawn to the powerful voices - i bought the soundtrack and rented the movie soon after. and soon after that, i bought the movie.the power of one is one of the better movies of the decade, and it drips with hope. "yeah, but its false hope." "better than no hope at all." i like movies with a message, and this movie does a good job of showing that the people in power, the establishment, babylon, are not always right or just. apartheid ripped a nation apart, pitted tribe against tribe (afrikans, english, zulu, etc.). the power of one gives an inside look at what apartheid did to all south africans, white and black. the soundtrack has been background music for the last seven years of my life, the movie, a reminder of what's important in life. for years, i dreamt of acacias, drumming, gorgeous sunsets, and a smiling african people. a couple of years ago, i went to live in zanzibar, tanzania to chase my dreams. i found them. i also suggest buying the book - its a very different story, though of course very similar in ways. also, check out sarafina and cry freedom, which talk about two of the largest tragedies i know of, the soweto massacre and steve biko.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly Powerful and Filled with Hope! Review: I watched this film in 1992 and to this day still remember its powerfully hopeful message and its hauntingly beautiful music! It still remains on my 10 list of all-time favorites.
Rating: Summary: POWERFUL IN ALL WAYS Review: This movie is incredible! I don't know what I can criticize about this masterpiece. The music is beautiful, and the acting was a true art. It grips your heart and tears it apart from the moment you started to watch it. I love it.
Rating: Summary: True to life drama on South Africa during the apparheid era. Review: This is an excellent film for those who want to understand the appartheid era in South Africa. The underlying story line pads the true story of the impact that appartheid had on the Africans during the 50's and 60's. Very moving to those who've lived through those times.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: WOW! I have seen this movie so many times I can't keep count anymore. It is a griping story that covers the begining of the boys life with great detail, while keeping you up to date, never leaving you behind. It is a nerative so you can follow the begining easily. If you haven't seen it yet, all I can say is that you are missing out on a wonderful experience.
Rating: Summary: Reviewing the Movie: Excellent for use with adolescents Review: The movie was successfully used this year with 11th graders in our school in their overnight retreats. It was shown in sections of 40 minutes. The purpose was to show the passion one can have by following the "voices" in one's life. How many "ones" added together, like drops which form a mighty waterfall (an image used in the movie), can make a difference in our lives. The challenge of the movie is to be rooted in our own time and place and awaken to the voices of need around us. The movie is a marvelous adventure for any person, but especially for the young in this anti-hero era. Use it to help young people dream possibilities and be willing to pay the cost to change the world... one step at a time. END
Rating: Summary: A splendid journey through the mid-century South Africa. Review: The history of South Africa have never been told in such a living, colorful way. It is truly a journey through the mind of the South African people. Mr. Dorff is telling us a splendid tale with his own childhood as platform. From hatred through apartheid we can see the small glimpse of light that finally turned out to be the South Africa we see today. A true masterpiece of modern literature. I could not leave it once I started to read it. Read it - you too. Perhaps you too can perform daily mircales... END
Rating: Summary: Gorgeous, Stirring Film Review: Not what you'd expect from the director of "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid", two well done but rather shallow 'fighting' movies. While part of this movie does have to do with boxing, it is just a vehicle to better show the audience deep character changes happening inside the heart and mind of the lead character, P.K. (called Peekay in the book, apparantly, although I never read it). The director deserved any awards that were lying about when he made this film! The story is about a small British boy, P.K., who is orphaned at a young age and lives in an all-Afrikaans boarding school. He is harrassed and beaten, and eventually comes under the tutilage of 'Doc', an eccentric and wise old man from Germany. When Doc is taken to prison, he is treated exceptionally well, and introduces P.K. to Piet, a black inmate who teaches the small boy to box. In this way P.K. grows up, witnessing tragic and terrible happenings around him as well as triumph as he outrgrows his thin, scared figure and becomes a muscular, self-confident and strong-willed man. The film follows him as he grows as a human being, striving to change his world and live life to its fullest. The story is one without flaws, and although is a bit unbelievable (I don't think this is a true story; however, it very well might be) it is very convincing. The preformances are exellent, the best of which is definitely from Stephen Dorff, who plays P.K. His accent is wonderful considering I'm almost sure he's American. Mueller-Stahl as Doc is obviously spectacular, as always, and the acting of Morgan Freeman, who plays Piet... well, I needn't say more! The story is deeply stirring, sending literal chills down my spine as I watched. While the flakish, yet spunky, character of Maria (P.K.'s sheltered love interest who matures more with him then I think she would have otherwise in her entire lifetime) is played well, her character seems to be there simply to add a love story to an already fabulous film. The romance is quite touching, however, and is a nice distraction from the chaos of P.K.'s world. A film not to be missed.
