Summary: Read This Review !!!
Review: I live in Singapore, a place where Hindi movies can be bought with a snap. Yet i only watched 1. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. A friend of mine whom i really hate, started talking about Hindi movies. And since i saw one, i used the names of the superstars to brag about it. And then i was 'forced' to watch DEVDAS. such a stupid name. Fine. Lets get this over with.

My frown slowly turned into a smile as the first song blasted the halls of the living room. The show was the best i've seen. And the ending... i found it sadder than the TITANIC only because PARO was screaming 'DEVDAS' and then... Go see it.

Honestly, its the only reason that i am now hunting for a movie better than it. It also brought great friends together.

I rate it 4/5. Since i want to give it an honest and fair review. So far i have seen 20 over. None can still beat this.

Summary: GREATEST EVER!!
Review: ...This DVD is of utmost splendor. The story line is well-adhired to and the plot moves evenly throughout (of course, it does have its ups and downs---what movie doesn't?) Additionally, the costumes and scenery are of an impressive scale. Almost all of the actors do a splendid job with their performances, and the dance numbers are great! ... Hindi movies are not supposed to adhire to the Hollywood genre that many westerners are familiar with. Instead, Hindi movies are of a more theatrecal scale with over-done and over-lavished scenes. Dance numbers are also a regular in these movies, as well as almost impossible scenes that would probably never occur in real-life. Hindi movies, like Devdas, are an expression of the soul in an almost book-like fashion, full of metaphors and vivid imagery. ...

Summary: one of the worst and most pretentious movies ever seen
Review: bad direting, bad acting (well, acutually all the actors and actresses were really ACTING), bad storyline, unreal setting. well, nothing is right with this terribly made movie and i was so disappointed and tormented by sitting and watching this unrealistic and most pretentious movie. hindi movie is somehow black and white divided, either too good or too bad, too realistic or too pretentious, and this one, senor, is the most pretentious one i've ever seen. what are these people? kings and queens of egypt? how they could make such unreal luxrious living in india? ivory tower or what?! this is a typical daniel steele's story with hindi spices. nothing is right and everything is wrong.

Summary: Devdas: A Hedonistic Embarrassment.
Review: Let's get straight to the point: Bhansalli's remake of Bimal Roy's 1956 classic is a monstrously overwrought, overdone, overacted, and plainly overrated piece of cinematic melarchy. Sure, the sets are ornate (when they're not ridiculously gaudy), the costumes intricate (when they're not curdled with shiny sequins)and the acting is commercial (when it isn't mind-numbingly loud), but nothing in the film bears any resemblance to any of the deep, spiritual longings we have come to associate with this tragic story. Do I expect a literal retelling of the story? Of course not. Bhansalli had every right to interpret the story as he deemed artistically relevant. The sad result is that this film has no artistic relevance. It is simply an exercise for gross, peurile hedonism. Shah Rukh Khan is sadly miscast as the title character, and puts up one of the worst (if not the worst) performances of his career. There is no tenable conviction here. Perhaps it's because the director is obsessed with presenting Aishwariya Rai as the Ultimate Goddess of Ethereality under the guise of Paro. Aishwariya steals the show (such as it is) and delivers the sole moments of 'greatness' in the film's climax. Madhuri is competent as the courtesan Chandramukhi, but overshadowed by the much more ably-developed Paro. Jackie Shroff is especially wasted as the drunken whoremonger Chunnilal. Worst of all, there is no direction given to the story: it is simply coddled together as a mish-mash of dances, weddings/funerals/parties, and confrontations. Western audiences will 'ooh' and 'aah' at the plethora of songs and dances, but those of us who expect something more concrete in terms of acting/story/plot/theme will be sorely disappointed. Far better introductions to the true potential of the greatness that lies within the Hindi Film Industry are 'Lagaan', 'Asoka', and 'Company'. Do not waste your time with Bhansalli's overpriced mess.

Summary: AMAZING!!
Review: Let me start by saying I LOVE Shah Rukh Khan. This is the THIRD TIME this movie has been made over, and this is the best version so far. Shah Rukh Khan as usual was excellent and preformed each scene with passion and intensity. Aishwarya Rai was great as Paro, and gave real emotion to the role. But of course Madhuri Dixit was awsome as Chandramukhi. All of her dance scenes were excellent. Both actresses were excellent dancers and the songs were awsome and so fitting for each scene. Dola Re Dola was the best song and both danced magnificently. Shah Rukh Khan made me cry over and over, and his scene in Hamesha Tumko Chaha with Aishwarya made me cry because of their magnificent acting. Overall i think this is a great movie, and one i definately reccomend to others

Summary: Romeo & Juliet with a side of Curry
Review: What I like best about Devdas is that it is so unlike other Bollywood fare. In this film you will not find cute children, cute dogs, shameless use of 80's western clothing like Gap and Polo or strange Swiss and Scottish settings for the musical numbers. You will find one of the best looking and best-produced movies in Bollywood history (it is the most expensive Bollywood movie made to date). You will find Shahrukh Khan, the James Dean of Bollywood, (because no one in Bombay cries better on screen that him), giving a solid dramatic performance that differs in it's maturity from his other roles. The best part about this film was the amazing performance of Madhuri Dixit in a supporting role as Chandramukhi the courtesan. Her dancing is perfect as always, especially in the scene with Aishwarya Rai. Her acting matches her dancing especially in the scene with the "slap". And what a slap it is! Overall I think this would be a great movie to see for someone just being introduced to Bollywood because it lacks some of the more cheesy elements that may endear these films to Western audiences but can otherwise turn people off. May films such as Devdas reach a wider American audience.

Summary: good, but could be better
Review: This movie was pretty good. The first half was pretty slow, and I didn't like it, but once Madhuri entered the scene, it got much better. My favorite songs were "Dola Re Dola" (who didn't like it?) and "Hamesha Tumko Chaha". Shahrukh was nice, but Aishwarya and Madhuri were the ones who really shined. "Morey Piya" was annoying. Despite the high ratings (and almost an Oscar nomination), don't have your hopes set too high. Still, very entertaining and worthwhile to watch.
If you like this film, here are some others that are good.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mujse Dosti Karoge, Lagaan, K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham), and Humraaz for a mystery. Happy watching!

Summary: Heavenly beauties!!!
Review: This is the story of a rich and romantic man, played by Shah Rukh Khan. The plot of the story is that of a tagic love triangle.... This is the third time that this Indian classic had been remade. The set and custom are both very gorgeous in this film. One particular music sequence, the one perform by the two female led of this film was just perfect, it was sensual pleasure at its best. The dance and music are so good in this film that they compensates for its relatively laggy pace.

Summary: Devdas: Loud, Hollow, Tragic, and Tasteless.
Review: It's a curious thing, the way we view that with which we are unfamiliar and how we condescendingly bestow heaps of praise upon such entities for fear we may be judged "intolerant" should we adhere to our established criteria. The relatively favorable press enjoyed by Devdas in the international media is a sparkling example of such a travesty. Is it beautiful to look at? Absolutely. Does it sing and dance with a phantasmagoric energy unlike anything else we've ever seen? Undoubtedly. But barring a somewhat revelatory performance by its leading lady, Devdas is an utter disaster. Its narrative is full of so many holes and moves so languidly that it becomes impossible to get caught up in a tragic tale that has frequently been compared to 'Hamlet'. Shah Rukh Khan delivers a lifeless performance; it is not his fault, of course, but the director's, who gives the greatest moments and the film's focus to its leading lady, Paro (Aishwariya Rai). There is something of a strange and unconvincing love triangle going on here with a courtesan (Madhuri Dixit) but she basically laments about her station in life and is left behind. Everything and everyone is overdone, overblown, overstated, ovderdressed, and overacted. Film critics in the west seems to think that a 'good' Bollywood film is one that has the mandatory seven songs and dance numbersto match. They seem to think that story, acting, and plot are solely the domain of the West. Tsk, tsk. There is nothing to recommend the film save a few songs and costumes. They are ultimately unable to facilitate anything that resembles a relevant, meaningful, or even coherent film.

Summary: Utterly Perfect
Review: Never have I seen such a beautiful work of art...the dialogue: poignant; the constumes: glamorous; the sets: breathtaking; and the music; hypnotic...this is one movie which, with all its subtle nuances, clearly stands out as a masterpiece. Bansali has done it again.
