Rating: Summary: This is my favorite video. Review: I think what I enjoyed the most about this video, is the fact that even though Toni Collette's char- acter is frumpy and plain, she manages to come out on top in the end! I don't know of any woman who doesn't dream of getting married. Muriel just took her obsession to new heights. The family problems are real, and so isn' the insecurity that she first felt towards the beginning of the movie. I had never heard of Toni Collete before this film, but I am now a great admirer of her work. When- ever I am feeling down, I just pop in my copy of "Muriel's Wedding", and get both a good cry and a good laugh!
Rating: Summary: REAL LIFE Review: A movie that is real as real can be especially in this day and age. No family is normal but the need to be loved is universal. That need is what makes this movie so great. Everyone can understand why Muriel's confidence and self esteem are shattered after her family is introduced to the viewer. Yet the pursuit of love to the extent of the fairy tale marriage ceremony and wedding is understandable. Her theme song (Dancing Queen by ABBA) eloquently plays at the most appropriate times. This is a wonderful movie about a young woman who comes to love her life and family. It is great for boosting self confidence and every young woman should see it!
Rating: Summary: super southern indie brilliance Review: i saw muriels wedding twice and must admit that the first time i thought it was really pathetic and a very badly acted film. then i did some work on indie films so i watched it again with what i had learned in mind and it was a lovely film that had sad parts aswell as tons of hiarious bits. a true aussie great
Rating: Summary: Favorite movie of all time Review: To say that Muriel's Wedding is just a great movie is an understatement. It's a triumph. No movie is able to combine the biting wit, dramatic timing, and rainbow of human emotions better. Toni Collete soars as a down on herself, abba-loving "nobody" who thinks that if she gets married, she will be, "somebody". The journey she takes us on is laugh out loud funny and downright amazing. There are moments in the movie where you will want to stand up and cheer as it reaffirms that there is much life and love worth living and getting. Better than any self-help book, funnier than any sitcom, more real than most drama, Muriel's Wedding takes the mundane, everyday struggles we all have and turns them into an unforgettable, funny portrait of one women's journey to blissful self-actualization. After Muriel's Wedding.......you feel you can take on the world.
Rating: Summary: Subversive feminist flick:) Review: Muriel's Wedding is a hilarious commentary on the state of young women in Western society. At first glance you would think it was the anti-thesis of feminism, but Muriel's struggle for external independence, through marriage and changing her name transforms into a search for internal independence from her own demons of insecurity and a feeling of being unnaccepted on a familial and societal level. As well its just hilarious fun, and Muriel's personality and facial expressions mirror the "ugly duckling" in us all. Even if you don't want to analyze this movie, who hasn't cried like Muriel, messy, crumpled face, snot everywhere. Awesome, awesome awesome. Both my roommate and myself vote this our favorite movie of all time.
Rating: Summary: a comedy, a tragedy, and a romance, all rolled into one! Review: This is one of the few movies I can watch time again and still find it funny, sad, and inspirational. This movie, unlike typical American flicks, is not formulaic and predictable, and the plot, without giving anything away, is crazy but believeable . Muriel is Everywoman, which is why it's so easy to identify with her, laugh and mourn with her, and cheer for her. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: A look at Muriels Wedding Review: Muriel's wedding was one of the best movies that I have ever been introduced to! It is un like all the other movies that I have seen before, bringing tears of laughter, and tears of sadness to everyone. It is a emotional rollercoaster to all that has the prevledge to watch this movie with friends and family!
Rating: Summary: AUSTRAILIAN HUMOR TRANSFORMS TO AMERICA Review: This is an outstandingly funny movie about an austrailian young women(Muriel)that is a bit overweight and dumb as a box of rocks. Throw in a family that's more screwed up then her...(maybe they should meet the Bundy family of Married With Children)and a bunch of ditzy friends and you've got a great comedy with alot of down under flavor.
Rating: Summary: Emotionally Thought Provoking..... Review: I searched high and low for a copy of this movie and found it last week by some miracle (only $21.99, new). Why? When I saw it the first and second times, I fell in love with it. It isn't your traditional "ugly duckling" movie as other critics tend to call it. It's all about being wanted, accepted and loved. Most of us can relate to that at some point in our lives, can't we? We cry when Muriel cries and laughs when she laughs. Well written with minor sub-plots, there isn't a time when I'm bored with this movie. I can barely listen to my ABBA CD's without crying or wanting to dance and this movie can be thanked for that. Unfortunately it is hard to find on VHS and someone has it listed for $50.00 for a used copy on the auction block. BTW, Toni Collette did a wonderful job in Sixth Sense thought her part wasn't as grandiose as Bruce Willis'. I hope to see her in future films as well.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Movie Review: Muriel's Wedding IS often an overlooked movie. I consider it one of my all time favorites in addition to "Beautiful Things" and "What's Love Got to Do with It?". I've been looking to buy this movie forever and have had no luck.
