Summary: The Best Movie Ever?
Review: This movie is a wonderful adaptation of Edmund Rostand's play (which is also great). It is also magnificently acted out by Depardieu, who brings a dynamic essence to the movie. Definitely a must-see.

Summary: 5 stars for the movie, lost one for lack of extras!
Review: I love this movie! One of the best foreign films of all time. This is one of those movies that transcends language barriers and even those who don't like to read subtitles will find this such a mesmerizing production they would even notice or mind. This movie HAS to be heard in French. I only wish I could, in good conscience, give it 5 stars. I have to take one away for the appalling lack of bonus material. This film deserves the full treatment - 2 discs, even. It's a shame that MGM didn't spend more time or money on this treasure of a film.

Summary: Great movie but...
Review: Will not buy if it comes out in silly 'letterbox' widescreen.
MGM, why not 'anamorphic' widescreen.

Summary: I love Gerald Depardieu
Review: I loved this movie the first time I saw it; to listen to Gerald Depardieu speak french is wonderful. The script is great; adventure, humor, and romance. You really feel for the characters and are sad to see it end. A must see :o)

Summary: An absolute gem
Review: I saw this movie many years ago, on video tape, and I am so happy that it is finally coming out on DVD.

Like most of the roles that I have seen Gerard acting in, he puts heart & soul into making the movie come alive. This movie is no different.

From every perspective (costumes; acting; direction), this movie is a real winner, and one that you will want to add to your own collection.

Summary: Stunning movie
Review: Depardieu put his heart and soul into the role, creating the most compelling screen version of the long-nosed man in the shadows. The film is a bit uneven at times but moves briskly along in its re-telling of Edmund Rostand's classic tale of love and shadows. The sets and costumes are first rate and the scenes are lively and vastly entertaining, especially when compared to earlier versions of Cyrano. It helps greatly to see it in French, with the rich flowing language of the novel. The battle scene feels a bit too staged, filled more with humor than with pathos, making Christian's final scene a bit too much like tragi-comedy, but Depardieu captures all the pathos in the closing scene in the convent. This movie is the definitive version thus far of the great French love story.

Summary: The finest screen actor of our time (but he's French!)
Review: There's not really any way this film can be faulted, although it isn't going to appeal to everyone because it's subtitled. The casting is perfect and it's very funny for the first half, although the last scene will make anyone with a heart cry.

I have this on DVD already - it was released a while ago - but the version currently available isn't in its proper cinematic aspect ratio (although it claims to be on the box) and has dire picture quality. Hopefully this new one is much better, then I can trade in my old one.

Summary: The most romantic love story ever written
Review: This rendition of Cyrano is absolutely superb. The poetry is beautiful, the acting is amazing, and the story is immensely moving. This is by far the most romantic and tragic love story ever written - far better than Romeo and Juliet. And even though Steve Martin's Roxanne was cute and amusing, it doesn't do the story justice. This is the version that you must have!

Note: Beware of the Korean version of this DVD. While it plays on US machines, they have massacred the English translation. If you have it, you need to replace it with this version.

Summary: Timeless story, excellent acting
Review: I've been teaching Cyrano for almost 10 years and this is by far the best version I can imagine. Depardieu's acting is subtle and will leave you breathless - it's so good you'll forget that you're reading the subtitles. I show the VHS to my classes, and it creates the kind of silence in the classroom that only happens when a group is taken out of itself - the story cuts across gender boundaries, age boundaries, and gets even the most cynical hard-edged types to stop and smell the jasmine. Steve Martin's Roxane makes a great companion - seeing this movie will enhance your enjoyment of that movie as well - highly recommended! (And great costumes and music, too!)

Summary: Cyrano de Bergerac ~ Gérard Depardieu
Review: Fantastic version of a classic. Gerard Depardieu does an amazing job. The sub titles aren't an issue. This DVD is really a keeper. Get it! You'll be glad you did.
