Summary: The best movie of 2001
Review: This was easily the best movie of 2001, for several reasons. First, Nicole Kidman gives the best performance of her life. A 180 degree turn from Moulin Rouge, which, in my opinion, was a close second. How wonderful to see an actress give two such diametrically different performances in the same year, both Oscar caliber. Note how she never smiles in the movie, but communicates her thoughts through her expression. And that eerie look!
Second, this is a very well crafted film. The plot is well thought from the first to the last scene. Every single scene contributes to the meaning and conclusion of the film. How uncommon and refreshing to watch a "suspense/horror" without a single drop of blood.
Third, the direction is unmatched. The horror in the film is achieved through ambiance. Terrific effects playing with light and darkness. The condition that the children suffer from fits perfectly into the rest of the film's light vs. darkness contrast. You can easily tell that all actors were very well directed, and all camera shots and angles are precise. In addition to directing, Amenabar also wrote and directed the film's score! Talk about comprehensive direction!
The DVD set also brings lots of goodies. It includes a documentary of children who suffer from the same condition as the kids in the film. One also gets the traditional 'Behind the Scenes, which is very interesting.
This is definitely one of the best, if not the best made suspense/horror movies ever made.

Summary: Just see it, you can read my review, I'm safe
Review: What else is there to say....if you like a lot of suspense, and a lot of creepiness in a big gothic house this ones for you. Hopefully you haven't read too many reviews about endings and exactly what it's all about. Just let's say......Kidman, who's husband is off at war, has two kids, sensitive to light, so there's a lot of darkness in the house. All the servants up and leave one day, and three new ones come. But strange noises and bumps and bangs and voices just make the whole house and everyone in it a little uneasy. I think enough said....it's fun...turn off the lights, grab some popcorn, and a pillow, your cat, dog, or partner, friend, whatever.......and enjoy!!

Review: "The Others" is a superbly crafted horror film made with excellent acting, scripting, and great use of atmosphere and suspense to create a chilling movie. Gorgeous Nicole Kidman is absolutely perfect as the mother of two children with a bizarre illness who she keeps in her great English mansion, circa WWII.
Haunting, genuinely scary ghost story that weakens significantly towards the end- its only flaw. A richly atmospheric movie worth repeated viewing.

Summary: Chillingly Satisfying
Review: A sleeper hit last year, "The Others" is certainly worthy of all the buzz it generated. It is a well-acted, competently directed film, with enough chills to satisfy fans of the thriller genre, but not enough to scare those of us away who like our frights few and far between. Many adjectives have been used to describe Nicole Kidman's performance, and I think "luminous" is a good one. I haven't been that fond of Kidman in the past, but this performance, full of passion and fire, won me over. The child actors were excellent as well. I enjoyed "The Others" from beginning to end; in fact, I liked it so much, I bought it!

Summary: Chilling!
Review: Nicole Kidman soars as Grace, the rigid and traditional mother of two, whose husband went off to fight in WWII and never came back. Grace's children, Anne and Nicholas, are deathly allergic to sunlight and as a result Grace rarely leaves her large, Victorian house and begins to feel confined if not trapped.
The creepiness begins when all the servants mysteriously disappear and Grace hires new ones, an older man and woman and a teenage girl who doesn't speak. Than, as in any horror movie, things start to happen. Voices belonging to unknown and unseen people are heard resounding through the big, dark rooms, doors which were closed and locked are found open, the beautiful piano in the living room plays in the middle of the night, Grace's children, particularly Anne, claim to have seen a family of four in the house claiming that it's theirs.
And of course there are secrets. Lydia, the teenage servant girl, has not always been mute but Mrs. Mills won't reveal what prompted her to stop talking. Anne and Nicholas speak of "it" an event that happened involving their mother loosing their mind.
The ending is breathtaking and unbelievable, leaving viewers saying: "Oh my God..." It's a wonderfully done, delightfully terrifying look inside a family, which has been struck by tragedy and a poignant observation of the frailty of the human condition. It's not just a spine-tingling horror movie but also a movie about family, love and loss. I fully and completely recommend it.

Summary: An Extremely Well Done and Incredibly Chilling Horror Movie
Review: "The Others" is by far one of the best and most thrilling horror or ghost
movies I have seen for a long time. And that means a lot looking at the
franchised garbage the viewers have been exposed to for the past decade
such as ''Scream'', ''Urban Legends'', ''I Know What You Did Last Summer''
and the rest of those so called teen-fraternity-sorority-pretty-blond-
witnessing-a-slaughter-in-college'' movies.
"The Others" is different. What makes this movie stand out is not special
effects, blood all over the place, a massacre, or some slimy aliens, but
the human mind and its psychology. There is indeed nothing more scary
and frightening than psychological fear and one's mind when it is caught
up and imprisoned in the hell of solitude, despair, and fear...The movie
does not for a second rely on special effects to make the viewers in a full
theater feel as if they were alone with Kidman in that haunted house. You
will forget everything around you and feel completely isolated and alone
with her in that situation. The camera angle, sudden movements, the
excellent editing, the atmosphere created by the production designer, and
ultimately the excellent and authentic performance by _all_ actors are
what make this movie haunt you in your seat (and later in your sleep!) and
wish you could get up and leave, while at the same time being
mysteriously drawn to the characters' misery and anguish and the secrets
in the whispering, dark rooms of the house. The ending is as shocking
and breathtaking as the rest of the movie and will just glue you to your
seat...Since the psychological threat and suspense is present at all
times, you feel that the whole movie is just one scary scene. Indeed, for
what the director has created in this movie, counting the ''scary scenes'' is
completely irrelevant. The viewer is held at a high suspense level at all
times without break or interruption. You constantly feel as if something
was going on at some corner, a whisper, the door moving, every shadow
hiding some haunted secret...and all of this is supported by the, to the
same extent, excellent score which just provides and contributes to the
thrilling setting and theme of the movie. It is important not to enter the movie with any or extensive prior knowledge
about what is happening and so forth. In fact, I recommend just watching
it without even reading the booklet. The first experience one has when entering a movie one has never seen before is just priceless. No matter
how much you like the movie, it will not be the same the second or third
time. Not knowing what is going on and just going with the character on
this psychologically-wrecking journey, is what will make this movie
literally take your breath away and leave the lights on when you go home
that night. Definitely one of the best suspense thrillers for year and at on an equal
level with such classics as Stanley Kubrik's "The Shining".

Review: Five stars in my opinion and is the best movie of Nicole Kidman.This is really one of the best motion pictures I have ever seen and truly deserving of the critical acclaim it has garnered. I think Nicole Kidman should have been nominated for Academy award. Great performance!

Summary: An excellent spooky film!
Review: Okay, someone PLEASE explain to me HOW Nicole Kidman did not win an Oscar for her superb performance in this film, ... But The Others...now this is a good film. It's one of those European horror films, which already makes it better than most American films (forget the production values or Tom Cruise as the producer, this is NOT a typical Hollywood film). It probably helps that the director, most of the cast, and most of the production team are European. Plus, filming was done in Europe. The result is one of the best haunted house films in a long time. In a nutshell, the plot is about a family (Kidman and her, uh, 2 kids; the husband is off at war) near the end of WWII who begin to believe their home (one of those great crumbly mansions with long halls and dark chambers) is haunted. But is it truly haunted or is Kidman slowly going mad? .... These are but a few possibilities in this genuinely spooky film. What's more, the suspense is achieved almost entirely by direction, set design, sound, and acting. The 2 kids are simply amazing. The girl in particular is easily the equal of "Sixth Sense" Haley Joel Osment. Kidman is a revelation, her controlled and mannered performance probably the best I've seen her do. Special effects play almost no role in this film (to be honest, there are special effects but they are so well-disguised that you would never have known it unless the 2nd disc of this 2-DVD set revealed them.). It is a bit like the film Castaway, which had a lot of special effects that were darn invisible. I much prefer this sort of filming, where the special effects augment the storyline, rather than calling attention to themselves. The strength of this film is that...even without any special effects at all, it would still be a powerful film. Now that's good filmmaking! ...Guaranteed to be scary!

Review: More movies should be made like this one. From beginning to end this impressed me! I don't compare it to any movie in it's field. I very much believe in spirits being around us and this movie helped me to understand a their presence a bit more. The end is brilliant and the cast was well chosen! CHEERS!
