Summary: Wonderful, wonderful!
Review: Terrific film! I agree with the other 5-star ratings here. One thing that professional movie reviewers missed was that the musical score for Tampopo is Liszt's Les Preludes (based on a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine). "What else is life but a series of preludes to that unknown hymn, the first and solemn note of which is intoned by Death?" is how Liszt introduced his piece. Itami chose his music with careful deliberation!

Summary: Great movie, so-so DVD quality.
Review: Either the Ramen Master/Apprentice scene or the Food Fetishist scene alone would be worth the cost of the disc...I have not laughed that hard in a long time. The film itself deserves five stars.

However, the video and audio quality of the DVD is relatively poor. The video is too soft, and the sound quality is very poor at the beginning of some of the reel changes, indicating that the film from which the video was transferred was damaged. I would give the DVD quality only 3 stars (thus, an average 4 stars).

Hopefully a company such as Criterion can find better film and do a re-release with better quality.

Summary: A wonderful, offbeat Japanese classic.
Review: Films as low-key and refreshingly enjoyable such as this come around way too sparingly. It is a film of rare wit and heart, and realistically protrays everyone's favorite secret obsession: food. A rare treat, from start to finish.

Summary: Great Movie! Quirky and Fun
Review: I originally saw this movie in college and had to have it for my own. If found the main plot to be entertaining, funny and touching. The subplot, well, it is hard to explain - and really gives the movie a strange twist which is unrelated to the main plot.

I think this is a cult classic type movie, and find it hard to convince people to watch it with me. Once they do, they enjoy it - and ask what the heck the subplot meant!

The DVD is a standard presention, nothing special. I am moving over to DVDs mostly for storage right now, and do not have the needed equipment to measure the quality for review.

Summary: Love it!
Review: I never get sick of watching this movie! It's totally different from other Japanese movies I've seen. The story is so fun and the characters are all endearing. Go watch it again and again!

Summary: a many layered movie, delightful to watch
Review: I picked up this movie by chance last weekend. And it turned out to be such a wonderful surprise. I am going to watch it again and again.

Summary: How to become an ITAMI JUZO fan?
Review: Watch this movie..That's how. A satire about Japan, Inc. by one of Japan's modern filmmaking masters, Tampopo pokes fun at the overworked and ultracompetitive nature of Japanese society...ALL at the same time making you a bowl of noodles. A must see for everyone. Don't watch it on an empty stomach!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A gastro-erotic masterpiece
Review: This is, in my heavily biased opinion, the best film ever made. I am biased by a profound love for good food, and a keen appreciation for japanese culture. In Japan, you can never be successful doing things half-way. Tampopo is the quest for perfection, in noodles, love, and film making.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An intoxicating wold of love, crime, and ramen
Review: Tampopo is a wonderful film for many audiences. Not for the easily offended, nor people who despise subtitles. This film bring character to a tradation of Japanese Ramen, off color humor, and Mel Brooks like antics including the little things you miss until the third watching. Definately a must see for the humorist, and a must watch for a culturalist.
