Summary: Woefully inadequate remake. Poor acting, poor directing.
Review: The BBC Original drama Shadowlands could not be outdone. I don't blame the 'starring' actors for wanting to attach themselves to the drama but they fell way short. Once the 1990's version was made, it should not have been released. The original drama is moving, the remake is laborious to watch. The attempt to attach the Narnia concept to a green valley, robs the viewer of their own imagination and again falls short of the writer's and original versions' directors' intent. I have studied the original from many different perspectives and find that the remake is lacking in the depth and multi-faceted perspectives. Was it dumbed down for us in the USA market? It didn't need to be.

Summary: get some tissues, this one's a tear jerker
Review: This was a wonderful movie! Anthony Hopkins was awesome, as usual. It was a very moving love story, and I really felt for the characters. I cried at the end, and I NEVER cry at movies. Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Lewis's grief is extremely moving. I strongly reccomend it, even if you don't like love stories youll like this one.

Summary: intense and moving
Review: i generally do not appreciate the so called 'high arty' phony british films, but this was an exception. i loved this film for the unusual portrayal of the woman, and also unusual relationship, very fresh and charming. hopkins is at his best here, he brings out the shyness and the hidden charm of the oxford bachelor perfectly. unbelievable jump from lecter to lewis. a must see for people who appreciate different and varied interpretations of relationships. winger is also fantastic. i wish the back ground score was not so sentimental and dramatic.

Summary: This movie is cool
Review: Anthony Hopkins is the best in this movie I really enjoyed watching it. And it has to be good because it got to cry at the ending alittle and not very many movies can do that and so this movie is the best. You we really enjoy this movie and should see it.

Summary: CANNOT GET PAST FUNDAMENTAL DISLIKE FOR WINGER
Review: This was probably a good story. It has been a long time since I last saw it. It was sad and I probably cried, but now all I can remember is that I do not like Debra Winger, and that this film was too long. Anthony Hopkins was superb as always.

Summary: Love that hurts
Review: For cinematic beauty and an exploration of the depths of real love, this film is certainly a crowd pleaser. Debra Winger's verbal and non-verbal barbs are classic! Those who have read Lewis' works may be a little disappointed by some inconsistencies. C.S. Lewis has been described as a man who could "make a new suit look 20 years old just by putting it on". In most scenes, Hopkins looks like he just stepped out of Nordstrom's. Additionally, those who have read Lewis' essays and speeches know that he had many remarkable things to say. The producers and writers of this film missed a great opportunity to introduce this element to a larger audience by filling the speech scenes with some rather bland unremarkable dialogue. While somewhat distracting, these items are minor as they are not the main topic of the story. The film does successfully tell the story of a deep love--a love that hurts--shared by two extraordinary people who did not marry at once, but rather married at last.

Summary: Touching, but...
Review: ...I kept wanted to shout at the Debra Winger character, "Leave the poor man alone! He's the solitary donnish type & doesn't need a big mouthed American woman in his life!" But CS Lewis fell in love with her in the end so I let it go.

Summary: the best movie ever
Review: shadowlands is one of the best movies ever made. the love pours off of the screen and into your heart.

Summary: A passionate movie
Review: While this movie certainly took some liberty with the topic--and what movie doesn't?--I really enjoyed Shadowlands. I have seen it three times now, and I rarely watch a movie even twice. (Why watch something again when you know what is going to take place?) Hopkins and Winger are brilliant in their roles as Lewis and Davidman, and I appreciate seeing a portrayal of the real pain Lewis must have felt when he lost the love of his life. I am not one who owns a lot of movies, but this one I am happy to have.
