Summary: The Man From Snowy River
Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen with my three children. It is a must-see for all families with children ages 6+.

Summary: The same as I remember from 11 years ago....
Review: I enjoyed the movie just as much as I saw it the first time. The only thing was that there were some offensive words that changed my view of it this time. Good movie!!considering what is out there now a days.

Summary: One of the ten best Westerns ever made.
Review: The great cinematography, music and terse screenplay are not all that is involved. First, to have a great western, you need the horses. They often get the best scenes in this beautiful film, and rightfully so. This is a film about horses, and growing up. This is a film that comes hard on the heels of classics such as "Shane". The bad guys here don't get plugged in the forehead with a Colt 45, they simply fail. The good guys win in the end because they have done the right thing. If you ever believed in those ideas, then you will love this film.

Summary: Fantastic DVD transfer of a spectacular Aussie classic
Review: I knew this 1982 movie from the cinema and VHS, and was hoping the picture and sound on DVD wouldn't disappoint in 2002. I needn't have worried!

The DVD (which contains both widescreen and full screen versions) features a magnificent visual transfer, and a thunderous, sumptuous orchestral soundtrack. The cinematography, especially the helicopter shots of horseback chases and Australia's vast, pristine, alpine scenery, is spectacular. The recreation of pioneering life is very believable, and the dramatic story is very engaging, with comical moments and nothing offensive (why can't they do that these days?). And did I mention that the horses are gorgeous?

It would have been nice to see a feature about the epic poem of the same name by Andrew Barton "Banjo" Patterson, but that is easily found on the Internet.

Enjoy it soon with your children, your grandparents, your spouse ... even your drinking buddies! Great entertainment, great DVD!

Summary: A great story for horse lovers
Review: This is one of the better movies that has been made about horses and the people who love and work around them. There is a decent amount of adventure and romance in the movie as well. The Australian mountains set the perfect backdrop for the movie. The DVD doesn't have much bonus material, but the picture and sound quality are much better than the VHS edition.

Summary: The horses, the music and the scenery catch your breathe!
Review: I have seen this movie many times on both Laser and vhs, mostly laser. The scenery as has been said is magnificent. If you are a horse lover you will love this movie for that reason alone. There are few soundtracks as stirring as this one. The music and the action will put you on the edge of your seat. There are a few of the comedic lines that come to mind every once in a while, so it has some humorous parts too.

I would love to see some extras on this DVD. The history of the story based on the poem "The Man from Snowy River", written by Banjo Patterson would probably be fascinating.

This poem/movie tells the story of a young mountain boy (who thinks he is a man), mounted on a small mountain pony, who rides out with the experienced stockmen in pursuit of a runaway horse. Because of his age, and the size of his horse he is at first ridiculed, but when the wild bush horses take to the wild and rugged mountain tracts, he and his pony prove their worth. The ballads and poetry of Banjo Paterson reflect the spirit of the Australian Outback and the people who lived there. The vast distances, the droughts, the floods, the flies, the heat ... and the harsh and beautiful places of Outback Australia were brought to the city people of the late 1880's through the writings of Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson. This movie brings it to us today.

Both Tom Burlinson and Kirk Douglas did outstanding jobs in this movie. I can only hope that the transfer to DVD is a good one, I don't know why not since it was already digital for the laser. I am sure you will not be sorry if you purchase this DVD.

Summary: A classic Western with independent spirit
Review: This is something primal and Earthy about this film. The horses, the terrain and the people all seem crafted from the same dirt. Each character, man, woman or horse, display the same strength of will and personality. An independent Australian film, "The Man from Snowy River" has the unmistakable mark of personal vision and integrity.

The story and themes are typical of Westerns; a poor boy from the mountains courts a wealthy man's daughter, the same boy seeks to prove himself as a man by succeeding where his father failed, an older man mentors the boy and sets him on the right path. However, atypical of American Western films is the strength of the female characters, and the somber mood of the film.

The acting is top-notch. Kirk Douglas does a suprisingly good turn in a dual-role, playing the brothers Spur and Harrison. (when I first saw the film I didn't realize that they were the same actor.) Each actor fits his/her role perfectly.

Of special note is the score. I dare you not to get goose bumps during the finally, when the orchestra plays.

Not many extras on this DVD, but a film this good doesn't really need them. "The Man from Snowy River" remains one of my all-time favorite movies. Highly recommended.

Summary: great for whole familyl
Review: My 6 and 8 year old daughters sat spell bound watching this great horse movie. Although there was a sad scene in the very beginning, they accepted it and went on to enjoy all the great riding scenes and the chase at the end of the movie. Also, a very romantic movie and a good movie about a young man prooving he is a "man" to the rest of the men.

Summary: If you've seen the movie, have you read the poem???
Review: This movie was based on a poem of the same name by Andrew Barton "the Banjo" Paterson, in my humble opinion, Australia's greatest ever poet (sorry Henry). Even "the Banjo" himself makes it into the movie - see if you can work out who he is...

And if you've seen the movie and read the poem, you should also buy the soundtrack ("Jessica's Theme" - aaaahhh.....). It was the first CD I ever bought almost 20 years ago now.. How many fellow aussies out there get goosebumps and tears in the eyes when the orchestra swells into Waltzing Matilda at the end???

And if you are still searching for more, check out the movie "Phar Lap" which came out soon after and has Tom Burlinson as the main star (after Phar Lap of course)

Cheers

Summary: Absolutely Amazing
Review: I grew up watching this film with my parents. I can say that this film is just as amazing now when I watch it as an adult. The film has such amazing scenery: from scenes in the mountains with the clouds low around them, to the beautiful shots of the river, the scenery helps make the film so fun and wonderful to watch.

The acting in this film is very good. Kirk Douglas does an amazing job as the father of Jessica, who just wants her to live a proper life. She, on the other hand, wants something more from life, and eventually, falls in love with Jim, the stable hand who lives in the famed Snowy River Country of Australia. The themes of love beyond class, and a young man comming into himself, this is one of those classic films that you just want to see over and over again. I would recomment this movie to anyone who loves an amazing story, with breath taking scenery along with it.
