Summary: Too Giggly
Review: This movie was a great laugh. Kids love it, and the only gripe is the translated version is way too giggly

Summary: Best kid's movie ever
Review: Totoro is, unreservedly, the best movie for kids (and among the best for adults) that I have ever seen. The cornerstone of it's success, in my mind, is respect. Respect for adults, for children, for nature and for the mystery of living. My Neighbor Totoro demonstrates that respect can be entertaining - something you'd never discover in American movies.

Totoro has enchanted each of the dozens of people I have recommended it to - many of whom don't have kids.

I bought a copy for my daughter before she was born and it has been one of her favorites since about age two. (Her other favorites, and I can't fault her taste - I like them all, too - are Kiki's Delivery Service, The Three Ninjas, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which I'd say is the second best kids movie I've ever seen.)

Summary: Delightful, original, non-violent film for children & adults
Review: This film has been a favorite in our family since my children were very young. They even loved it in Japanese (even though they couldn't understand it) before this English version was released! There is no scary or disturbing violence. Instead, it offers delightful characters and imaginative creatures in an original story that also introduces children to aspects of the Japanese culture. And of course there's the beautiful animation. Hayao Miyazaki is a favorite of mine, and this is his best film for children. It's our favorite gift because we know if we loan out our copy, we won't see it again for a long time!

Summary: Spellbinding unique high quality Japanese cartoon.
Review: I saw this in the theater's when it first came over here. I then got it for my niece. She sat there without moving from slowly eating her cereal. It took her 1.5 hours to finish that bowl. I have rewatched this moving about 7 times and the best parts are still worth seeing again. I like the bus stop scene the best. More movies should have more scenes like these. If they did, they would be a hit. Sure thing.

Summary: Must-see for everyone
Review: At first, I cannot find this video at videoshops, since the cover art for this video is kind of Americanized. As I am a Japanese, I am pleased to have the same song in the US version as in the original one (In "Kiki", it was replaced with other one, which might be created by American song writer. Let me comment on some facts in this video. Two sisters' name, "Satsuki" and "Mei" stand for May, which reminds us greenish trees under the bright sun (Satsuki is sort of the medieval Japanese and stands for May. Mei is just May.) As someone comments, they have a kind-of European look. But we Asians are ususally quite displeased with stereo typed Asian depictions in American animations, such as Disney's Mulan.Tense eyes and apathetic visages. In fact, we feel caricatured badly. Another point. I'm sure that this does not exist in modern Japan. But certainly, around WWII, still there was a big forest which is worshipped by people, rivers filled with clean and transparent water, and so on. We should regret that we have been destroyed such beautiful natures. Anyway, this is a must-see and the best of Miyazaki's works. It touches everyone's heart I believe.

Summary: A masterpeice!
Review: Hayao Miazaki is an incredible artist and writer. If you think that this movie is great, check out Nausicaa of the valley of the wind.

Summary: Magical, very special, superb animation
Review: I was introduced to the magical animation of Hiyao Miyazaki through "Kiki's Delivery Service". This is just as good, with a more Japanese setting than the European-looking "Kiki", alhough my one (tiny and insignificant) complaint -- or really, just a question: Why do many characters LOOK european - round eyes and red or brown hair - when the setting is clearly in Japan? However, this takes nothing away from the chance to experience a master animator working at the very peak of his form, in a superb, naturalistic style that makes most contemporary animation look harsh, "cutesy", and talks down to children. The sensitive well developed story would fascinate children of all ages, as well as compell the interest of adults. It's a shame that this breathtaking film cannot be enjoyed on the big screen, but do NOT miss the opportunity to own your own video copy to view again and again! (P.S. I agree with other readers that Totoro toys would be just wonderful, and picture books of both Kiki and Totoro for young readers would be a marvellous addition to any child's library!) In an era of glitsy computer animation, this film is a stand-out in terms of both it's intelligent story and breathtaking, painterly art...a masterpiece. END

Summary: It's my very favorite animated film!
Review: This movie is responsible for bringing my boyfriend and I together! I was working at a desktop publishing/copy/movie rental place and this guy came in to print a computer file onto Linotronic paper...as it was printing, I would go downstairs to the developer and each time I passed a tv which was playing an animated movie...I kept stopping to watch because it was so CUTE! Then the guy came down to check the printouts with me and he noticed what was on the tv...I remarked how cute it was--and even though it was in Japanese, I could understand what was going on! This guy couldn't stop smiling and then he said, "Guess what I'm printing out?" I went to look, and it was an article on Totoro, written by him! I couldn't believe it! We stood and watched the movie for a few moments and he told me what was going on, and then he asked me out on a date! That was 8.5 years ago and I love him more than ever! Totoro symbolize our relationship and I have a wonderful collection of them all over my room--and I even have a beautiful cloth scroll-poster on my wall that has Totoro flying through the sky with Mei and Satsuke clinging him to him! Totoro is so special--it changed my life forever! : )

Totoro is a magical, wonderful movie...it's a beautiful film, the story is classic, the color is lovely, the artwork is delicious, the soundtrack and music is unforgettable, and the ending is so sweet it makes me cry every time. It deserves a special place in every home! END

Summary: Nostalgy for Japan in 50s
Review: Animation by Hayao Miyazaki and one of my favorite! This is a story about Totoro, the spirit of forest and little sisters living near-by. The background is a Japanese local village in late 50s, where still beautiful forest is reserved. It recalls my childhood in rural town. Mei, five-year-old girl met Totoros, living in a large tree next to her new home. Then her elder sister Satsuki, also met Totoro and Cat Bus, which are invisible to grown-ups. When Mei got lost on the way to see her mother in far-away hospital, Satsuki asks Totoro's help and Cat Bus brings them to her mother. With many fantastic and impressional scenes. END
